Bloggers may be more influenced by free stuff (aka disguised bribes) since they do what they want to do. If getting free stuff is cool, then they will get free stuff, talk about it for awhile, then drop it when the next new thing rolls along.

Here is a devil's advocate point (may be)...

What about tests? You aren't allowed to take the EMT Basic exam with a buddy to help you remember a few things.

But on second thought I guess a test is more a measure of your aptitude where as a casino is a game. Some may say that it is also a measure of your skill to play the game, except that argument breaks down because the Casino has the right to make you leave. That has the effect of tipping not the odds, but the control in their favor.

Think of it like two pro teams (pick your sport) playing for the title in their sport and one of them giving up when after many scorless periods, their star player, upon whom the team relies for their performance, is serriously injured and must leave the playing field. Now an inferior replacement must be brough in but instead of play with that handicap and risk loosing the title, the team calls the game and asks the other team to back out nice and quietly.

Those representatives assumed that you would not be running a CAT5 over to a friends place, or a 802.11b. One possibility is to consider the contract you have with the cable / DSL company similar to a MS software contract. The analogy is that a household on cable is similar to a computer with many users.

You can install a sw application on a single computer but have it used by as many users as are on the system, but you cannot install the same SW onto a new computer. Likewise, the cable companies are fine with you using the bandwidth in your household to several devices (analogus to users of the system) but not ok with you sharing via 802.11b with other households (an additional computer).

The reason is that bandwidth is not the issue. The issue is charging per subscriber (household). That gives them much more money per month.

Take the example from the article. Bob shares with three other people. Even if Bob paid for the 3 additional IPs (theoretical since the cable modem can't support more than a total of 3 IPs). That additional revenue to the cable co is $15/month. But what they want you to do is have three seperate accounts which would earn them $150/month. Big difference.
