Except that it is somewhat inaccurate. The correct explanation is that only photons of certain frequencies can exist in the space between the plates, while elsewhere you can have photons of any frequency.
I don't know what AC thinks, but I think there should be a grace period after obtaining a patent and failure to bring a product to market within said grace period should place the invention in the public domain. Five years sounds like a reasonable time frame, but the actual limit should be based on statistical data.
I disagree. Accepting something as true, contingent upon empirical evidence is not belief. That is exactly what St Thomas did to earn himself the nickname "Doubting Thomas"
Then the govt. would have an incentive to send as many people as possible to the joint, to maximize their bang for the buck, so we end up with the same result. You've only shifted the incentive from one side, to the other.
The problem isn't that it was a commercially operated prison. The problem is that the payment structure was set up in such a way as to benefit the operator for an increased number of incarcerations
How could you set up a commercially operated prison such that the operator would not benefit from an increased number of incarcerations?
Tell me exactly WHAT Bill Clinton did to earn us a 9-11?
Nothing. However, his predecessor stationed US troops in Saudi Arabia, a big PR mistake. Imagine that Iran stationed troops at the Vatican and count the ways in which THAT would rub you the wrong way.
Oh, yes. That good old American myth that the world would be safe if everyone and their dog were packing some heat. I guess I'll have to move to Baghdad or Mogadishu, which must be the safest places on Earth, since everybody there is armed to the teeth.
The more a nation like Iran embraces technology and science, the more difficult it is to reconcile that with crazy religious ideas.
Really? You should come live in the US for a little while and see for yourself. There are a lot of people here who think that all those hurricanes hitting Florida are god's attempts to exterminate the homosexuals. I have to say, for such an omnipotent guy, he's pretty bad at bowling.
Funny, the protectionist measures described in the article you point to were enacted by Northern League, a party of extreme right wing nut jobs, the complete opposite of the "socialist" image of Europe you like to paint in the US
It's not an unfair playing field. Somebody is WILLING to work for less pay than you. You are the one who has to adapt. That's how a free market is supposed to work.
There is a direct and increasing incentive for consumers to buy lower energy use products.
That market driven incentive exists for cars in the US, but it is completely ineffective. People still buy big trucks and SUVs. They are status symbols. The same thing would happen to the TVs.
If by thrived you mean "inched ahead", then you are correct

As they are, they're really expensive, rare, and possibly dangerous to make so they have to be screened very well.
I don't see why they should be. The IVF facilities are full of discarded blastocysts waiting to be put to good use.
Would you buy an Atom CPU that costs 5x what it costs now?
I disagree. Accepting something as true, contingent upon empirical evidence is not belief. That is exactly what St Thomas did to earn himself the nickname "Doubting Thomas"
Yes, one can do that, but that would not be religiousbelief. Belief, of any kind, implies a voluntary suspension of reason.
They're very biased towards home-grown stuff.
...the iPod sells well in Japan...
The trick is that since the terrorist will say no, they can be deported for lying on an immigration form
Yeah, 'cuz the day when the DHS finally spots a terrorist at the airport, finding a way to lawfully deport him will be their first worry.
The state can be sued for negligence and quite possibly manslaughter
The state should be sued for criminal negligence every time someone gets killed or raped in prison.
Then the govt. would have an incentive to send as many people as possible to the joint, to maximize their bang for the buck, so we end up with the same result. You've only shifted the incentive from one side, to the other.
They'll plead to a minimal security facility and won't be in gen pop, much like cops are when they go to jail.
Why aren't cops in gen pop when they go to jail? They are no longer cops at that point, so they deserve no special treatment.

why is there this preconception that linking to content that you know full well is illegal, is acceptable?
The content is not illegal. If it were, you could not buy Kung Fu Panda on DVD either.
I wonder how much of that loss of fun is the airlines' fault
100%. I'm not aware of any FAA regulation mandating 5 passengers per square foot.
Because visible light is scattered by dust a lot more that IR. So if you want to look inside a protoplanetary disc, visible light is not of much use.
Rochester
New York (hardly a red state full of religious types) does something similar.
I lived in upstate NY for 6 long years and I can attest to the fact that, apart from NYC, it is basically a red state full of religious types.
Tell me exactly WHAT Bill Clinton did to earn us a 9-11?

The government did not bring anybody to the US. The companies did. So, yes, it is a free market.
There is a direct and increasing incentive for consumers to buy lower energy use products.
