They're worried about f'ing junkies, and junkies don't become safe because their shit is legal. Likewise, making prostitution legal doesn't make the pimps and drugs go away. We know this.
You're an idiot, not insightful.
I see you've been drinking your kool-aid. What a good little citizen, drugs are bad m'kay?
You think they're going to get up from the gutter just because they can buy their drugs legally now? Doesn't seem to have cured all the winos.
No, it won't help the crackheads, it will help the rest of society. There will always be crackheads and winos, we must accept that. During the Vietnam war a huge percentage of soldiers were using heroin, amphetamines, you name it. After the war they did a study and found that a much smaller percentage remained addicted after they came back home. Most people don't want to be addicted to drugs, yes this is actually true!
You can make laws, imprison, beat, kill or whatever you want to do to addicts and history shows you only cause the problem to grow larger. The US has dumped billions if not trillions of dollars and uncountable man hours attacking this problem with force and it has only grown. How many more decades do we need to see the obvious pattern here?
Honest education and treatment and been the only methods that have been shown to work. Hey it's even cured a few winos!
In a rational society, either the people's law enforcement system would take care of the problem of crack users, prostitutes, and polluteres ruining woody ravines near their homes, or the people would be empowered to take care of the problem themselves using whatever force is necessary.
Actually in a rational society the people would just legalize drugs and prostitution and the problem goes away tomorrow. Decades of whatever force is necessary has turned this society into a police state full of frightened and abused citizens.
I wish I owned one of these crumbling industries. Microsoft is making one billion dollars in cash profit every month and that figure is increasing every month. Likewise the movie industry just enjoyed a very profitable year (with a large percentage gain in profits over last year). Of course this is slashdot, where reality and truth dont seem to penetrate
Yes they are making large amounts of money but so were the railroads in the early 1900's.
I want the latest AND the greatest. And whether people like it or not, when Vista comes out, it will be both.
Vista has nothing to do with 'latest and greatest'. It's the last gasp of the two massive but crumbling monopolies, Microsoft and the entertainment industry, to try and lock down everything you see and hear so they can charge you for it. The future doesn't have these monopolies, content creation is becoming more and more decentralized and their business model is dying and they are well aware of this.
I for one will absolutely be boycotting Vista.

If it was up to you, you'd bring about a total collapse of US economy, you mean? Thats wishful thinking until we can achieve some sort of energy independence.
If the US economy is dependent on blowing up children in the middle east then I say yes bring on the collapse. Then maybe we could revitilize the midwest by growing corn or even better hemp for all our fuel needs. I'm tired of hearing how we need the middle east for our economy while I see daily pictures of blown apart innocents. It's just not worth the price. If we don't wake up and deal with this then it will eventually deal with us, simple karma.
english MP mr Galloway blows ignorant "reporter" OUT OF THE FRICKEN WATER! [google.com] hehe makes me laugh every time.
Sure, if your definition of 'blowing out of the fricken water' is yelling your opinions and not letting the other person speak then sure that's what happened. As far as I'm concerned nobody is correct in this situation, when you resort to violence against innocents your argument falls on deaf ears.
If it was up to me the US would severe every conceivable connection we have with the middle east including Israel and focus on the numerous problems we have to fix within our own borders and let the middle east decide their own fate, but of course it isn't up to me.
wow what a bunch of big babiesw the military pilots are today.
He cant navigate without GPS, good god.
That's right. Back in my day we would strap a private to a kite and fly him over the enemy to drop rocks and flaming pinecones. We didn't need no confangled GPS... ahhhhhh.... get off my lawn!
You neglected to factor in what a user once described to me as 'IT Time'. IT Time is when a tech tells a user, "I'll be back in 10 minutes.". That 10 minutes will actually be a minimum of several hours to a maximum of two weeks, at which time the tech flags the item in his queue as completed and then takes a 3 hour lunch break.
Piracy is as old as PC games and used to be much easier, but the games sold just fine. The problem is price and the same old tired titles being pushed out over and over.
If they want to start selling games they should provide a downloadable version with a nice printable manual for at least $20 but no more than $30. What's the first thing I do when I bring a game home? Throw away all the dead tree except for the discs and the manual, and the manual follows about a week later. How much money would they save by not printing boxes and manuals, pressing cd's, packaging them and shipping all that garbage to the retail stores?
Plus the industry has plateaued, they need an injection of fresh ideas and talent. They have become formulaic just like the music and film industry. And just like those industries it will take a new wave of independent developers to shake things up.
The colonizers certainly considered themselves superior, and their greater technology meant that they were able to prove it to themselves.
What greater technology? Guns, religion, butter churners? It didn't take long for the Indians to get guns. It was the diseases from the Europeans filthy way of life that did them in, after that is was simply the vast numbers of ever increasing invaders that finished them off. It had nothing to do with superiority.
A superior race would be more likely to simply enslave us, eat us or kill us for sport.
See the colonization of the Americas for a good reference.
Are implying that the Native Americans were an inferior race? They were the same species that the invaders were. After they were decimated by the European's small pox and other diseases they simply didn't have the numbers to defend their land.
A 'superior' race would have survived and evolved past tribal behaviour or they couldn't be called superior. And who says they would have ever even had a tribal phase at all? We evolved from an territorial, male-dominated hierarchical ape and seem to still be in that phase. Hell, we probably wouldn't even recognize a superior race if we saw one. Many could argue that whales are superior to humans. Sure they don't build cities or eat hamburgers but they do have much larger, more complex brains than us. And playing the the ocean all day sure seems superior to my life.

Look at the immense popularity of the first SW movies, and consider that they were made on much lower budgets (even counting inflation) and primitive SFX.
I don't think the original effects were primitive at all. With the technology available at the time the amount of creativity that went into every aspect of the movie was incredible. Every single little detail of the film had some genius figuring out a way to make it appear as real as possible.
As an example, my ex-father-in-law worked for a landscaping company. One day a guy from Skywalker Ranch came out and ordered a few pounds of every type of gravel and sand they had. When he delivered it the guy let him see what it was for. They had a large room with a movie screen on the wall and the entire floor was covered with sectioned squares that they filled with the different types of material. The entire purpose of the room was just to make different sound effects of people walking.
It was this attention to every little detail that I believe made Lucas Films what it was. Now it seems to have devolved into just another digital effects sweatshop.
Australia -- another country lucky enough to live under an American supplied defense shield.
American defense shield = Biggest protection racket ever.
Organized crime took over the American government in the 1960's. We in the US are basically screwed.

It seems like a full computer would be better than this in just about every aspect--price, power consumption, etc.
I use the Kuro box for my always on bittorrent box. It is very small, cheap and only uses about 40 watts of power.

They should just change the name to Microsoft Vista Forever and then they can take as long as they want.
