Yeah, we are well aware that apple's corporate website is Solaris. Apple has never hidden that. In fact, Apple has always had a fairly good relationship with Sun! You will note that .mac runs Apache/Darwin. I have found that, other than occasional slowness on weekday evenings, I have no complaints whatsoever about this service. The original posted clearly did not *telephone* Apple about his problems, which I suspect are caused by a misconfiguration of his machine, or his LAN.

In fact, I intend to write my state legislators and suggest such a law just as soon as I know who wins on Nov. 5th.

  6. Re:Hybrid Modifications on Gas/Electric Hybrids, Air Cars in the News · · Score: 2

I look at emissions. CO, NO, NO2, Hydrocarbons, and CO2. Only the CO2 is directly related to the amount of gasoline consumed in a manner that cannot be reduced by good design. The Prius is a SULEV, or Super-Ultra-Low Emissions Vehicle as defined by law. It actually has a lower emssions rating than the automatic transmission Insite, even though that vehicle gets better mileage. You have to go to the manual transmission Insite before it qualifies as a SULEV. So, yes, impact DOES have an efficiency component, but that is only one part of the equation, and not necessarily the most important one.

  7. Re:Hybrid Modifications on Gas/Electric Hybrids, Air Cars in the News · · Score: 2

I have a Prius, and IMNSHO it is a more sophisticated system than that in the Honda models. I recommend it.

However, the real goal of all of these vehicles is not fuel-efficiency! It is having a low impact upon the atmosphere. It is far more important to be able to continue to breathe clean air than to be able to continue to afford petrol!

With either of these systems, the key to good mileage is to learn to drive the car, and to find the right balance of acceleration, following distance, and braking that keeps you from operating in high fuel consumption modes.

    I have a 2002 Prius that I simply love!

Today I drove from Elgin, IL to New Salem Village (near Springfield) and back in it. 220 miles down and 220 miles back. Comfortable. Smooth. CD player making tunes. It was wonderful. And we did this 440 mile trip on less than one tank of gas, with an indicated MPG of 48.2 for the whole trip.

Nothing bare-bones about this car. It works like a dream. Mind you, it isn't designed for drag-racing, but it can accelerate well enough to merge without stress, can zoom along at 70 with traffic, and stops really, really well.

For those who might care; I got mine with cruise control, side airbags, and the single disc CD changer. I passed on the electronic map system. The color is Aqua Ice, and it is a pretty car!

    Go test drive one.

Prior to this I ran OSX 10.0->10.1 on an original bondi blue iMac (233 MHz G3) and it performed acceptably. If 10.2 is the sort of improvement I expect, then there should be no cause for anybody to complain!
