  1. Re:bullshit on Cable Companies Despise PVRs · · Score: 2

The problem is that advertisers aren't complete idiots. If 25% of the American population were to suddenly go out and purchase a PVR, something tells me advertising firms would realise that 25% of the American population is watching fewer commercials. Maybe not 25% fewer, but they could probably figure out about how much their viewership would go down. Then, when the cable/satellite companies tell them their viewership remained a steady 10 million, they would scoff at them, and offer to pay them less for the same air time.

Recently, two Finnish churches refused to pay royalties to the country's copyright society for the performance of Christmas hymns. The congregations won their case in a district court, but the society has appealed.

They sued churches. This blows my mind. What do they want as punishment, to get to kick the old ladies in the congregation? Or maybe conjugal visits with the church nuns? Surely payment for the right to carol isn't enough to deter these Christian fiends from violating copyright law again...

She happened to be to have a stoney disposition in the commercial, though, which sets her apart from the other commercials. Now she's the main obsession of Mac enthusiasts.

Jesse Helms blocked the legislation because the lower rates were still too high for many webcasters. However, these lower rates were not worse for the webcasters than the higher ones. The legislation was to change the rate from 0.07 per listener to some percentage of the webcasters' profits. For most webcasters, about 10%, for more profitable channels, 12%. However good intentioned Mr. Helms' blocking was, it will force webcasters to start paying (retroactively) fees based on the old system. They don't have to start ponying up all the dough quite yet, though, as this Salon article details.

You are right that the RIAA should be paying the webcasters, just as they do with the regular radio station promoters (that's a whole other problem, though).

    1. All networks (not just subscriber networks) take cut from cable providers. PRO: TV goes on like we're used to, only without commercials. CON: increased cable bills.

    2. Everything becomes pay-per-view. PRO: only charged for what you watch, things seem to be moving that way anyway. CON: casual viewing becomes much more hastle, you may miss stuff you didn't know you would like.

    3. Give advertisers personal profile, allow them to advertise to me before show. PRO: I don't have to watch adds for tampons. CON: doesn't seem practical. Wouldn't I be less likely to watch a big batch of commercials at the start of a show, as opposed to 2 minutes of commercials in the middle of my program? Also, I don't like the idea of giving my personal info to advertisers.

    4. Product placement. PRO: I'd rather see Buffy slamming back a Coke (tm) for a few seconds as opposed to a 30 second spot for Coke. I realize that in real like people use brand-name products. CON: I don't want to see Buffy slam back a Coke and then exclaim to Xander how refreshing the new XtraClear Vanilla Lemon-lime Coke is. I don't want a product placement that, in any way, distracts me from the story.

Personally, I would like to see 2 and 4 in combination. I would like some product placement to subsidize pay-per-view costs.

Kept only 10% of games you purchased? Sounds like you need to start reading some magazine reviews, dude, or find a rental store.

There is a high crap-to-quality ratio, but I think this is going to happen on any dominant console. Nintendo used to be the king of crap (I don't know the state of affairs now, I don't know anyone with a Gamecube).

For those of us who don't have the ~$850 (US) to buy the 4 consoles, we have to roll the dice on which console will dominate.

Dominant console => more games developed & more high profile developers making exclusive-console games.
More games developed => better chance of more good games (in spite of poorer crap-to-quality ratio).

For curiosity, what are the 4 games you kept? I only own three games (MGS2, THPS3, and GT3), but I can think of a couple more I'd like to own (GTA3, FFX).

  15. screwing == making better games? on Dreamcast Broadband Adapters · · Score: 2

My PS2 has better games, plays DVDs, and has the best damn controller design in the history of gaming.

I know the Dreamcast is a whole lot cheaper, and hackable, and if I want to learn some embedded linux stuff, I'll go pick one up sometime. This is good news for linux on console enthusiasts, and maybe the diehard PSO players still left, but I'm more excited about the broadband adaptor for PS2 that's coming out soon, and seeing what impact it has on console gaming, and the linux for PS2 initiatives.

I'm not saying the Dreamcast didn't have great games. Sega has brilliant games, and I'm thankful that they're now developing games for PS2. But you can't deny that there are fantastic games on PS2 that outclass any other console's efforts. Also, last time I checked, there wasn't anybody developing new games for Dreamcast that would exploit this new hardware.

Hmmm... I would say that Linux and KDE are infinitely configurable, so this IS a problem, as far as locking down a desktop. Setting it up to clean out their home directory would be an option, as long as it would only clean out appropriate files, but I would say that somehow preventing a user from changing the desktop would be a better option. I haven't used KDE or Gnome a lot (I prefer FVWM, now THAT's infinitely configurable), but I'm assuming that all the control-panel-like things they have are just frontends to some .kderc file or something, right? I don't know about New Jersey, but here's what I know about Toronto:

Up until AnimeXtreme opened a store on 315 Spadina Ave. (a block north of Dundas), Suspect Video had the best selection of anime for rent. I haven't had a chance to visit the AnimeXtreme store (it just opened a week ago or so), so Suspect may still be king. There's two locations for Suspect, one on 619 Queen St. W. and one on 605 Markham St., just below Bloor (on the far west side of Honest Ed's).

The AnimeXtreme club also shows anime at Bloor Cinema every other Saturday. The cinema is located at 506 Bloor St. W. (just around the corner from Suspect, actually).

As far as purchasing anime, I've found no better place than The Beguiling. Very knowledgeable staff. This is just south of Suspect on Markham. Again, the new AnimeXtreme store may have better selection, I haven't scoped it out.

That's all I've got. Hope this helps.
