  1. no code tech cheers! on FCC Proposes Abolishing Morse Code Requirement · · Score: 1

As a no-code tech who has always wanted to upgrade to general, this would be great news. The code requirement was always a stumbling block for me. I got the tapes and practiced but I could not get it. My license expires in 2011 and I was going to just let it expire because I carry a cell phone all the time and use the computer to chat internationally and nationally... and since hams usually just talk about the weather or their gear (thanks to strict codes about not talking about anything interesting), I still may just let it expire. But its tempting to just go for general if they remove the code requirement.

  2. Re:To small? on Cell Phone as e-Book Reader (in Japan) · · Score: 1

Yes and no. Kanji can take up smaller space but as they become more complicated they also become more difficult to read when they get smaller. Many kanji can appear very similar or indistinquishable if they are too small. Also many Japanese words or grammatical elements do not have kanji, so they must be spelled out with hiragana or katakana and can be longer. And worse, because Japanese doesnt use spaces to separate words, elements of a single word can be wrapped.

Well I have a Nokia 6600 and a Motorola V600 and I have been reading books on them for ages. I guess Im ahead of the Japanese on this one.
With Symbian phones, like the Nokia 6600 there is ReadM. With my V600 I use Tequilacat BookReader. I currently have all the Harry Potter books and all the Hitchhiker's Guide books on my V600, and I really do use it to read, quite often.

  4. Worst acting ever! on Star Wars Revelations - May the Force Be With You! · · Score: 1

Okay the effects are quite good. I may even be willing to give the story a chance. But the acting is wretched. The actors were chewing the scenery the entire trailer. This strikes me as fanboys/fangirls who couldnt pass up the opportunity to make themselves part of the story, whether they could act or not. And in most cases, it appears they could not. Its probably too soon to pass judgement based on a trailer alone, but what I saw wasnt promising.

But you have to respect the effort. They've made it this far. I doubt I could have.

You can. I do. I have a Nokia 6600, which runs the Symbian Series 60 operating system. There are tons of apps for this phone, one of which is ReadM, a book reader. I have about 30 books on my phone. As far as I am concerned, Opera, ReadM, Agile Messenger (AIM, Yahoo, MSN), Vexed and Blacklist are the killer Symbian apps. Anyway, you can carry your library with you right now. I do.

I was introduced to computers first with an Apple. We learned to program LOGO in our math class when I was ih jr high. Although we didnt own a computer, I used a Mac fairly frequently in high school. I went through college without using a computer much, I had one of those word processing typewriters. By the time I graduated, in 93, Windows was becoming more popular. In 1994 I asked for a computer from my parents for Christmas. They got me a Powerbook 150. A year later I bought a Performa 660CD. Then a Win95 machine. Today I use an iMac and an iBook. Never got the Apple out of my system.

  7. I remember the 80 eruption - Spokane on Mount St. Helens Alert Status Increased · · Score: 1

I remember that day vividly. I was ten years old and my dad and I were on our garage putting up a basketball hoop, at our home in Spokane, Washington. I remember looking at the sky and saw dark, dark clouds, and told my dad it looked like it was going to storm so we better hurry. Almost immediately after that our eyes started itching terribly. We quickly finished installing the basketball hoop and then went inside to clean up. Dad turned on the tv and we saw the news, the volcano had erupted.

Of course a little thing like a volcano couldnt keep my mother from dragging us to the local Fred Meyer for some shopping. On the way there, the ash started falling like snow. We were in there for about an hour. When we came out of the store we stopped in shock. Day had turned to night, and six inches of ash covered everything. We had to scoop it off our windows so we could drive home, and it was like driving through deep snow.

For days we were told to stay inside until they could determine if the ash was the dangerous kind to inhale, or the not so dangerous kind to inhale. Ultimately I ended up being cooped up in the house for two weeks. No school, no going outside. As a ten year old I just about detonated.

It sure was exciting, and somehow my parents made the whole thing kinda fun. We even built a paper mache volcano so my parents could explain to me what a volcano was and how it worked.

Another eruption would almost be nostalgic. As long as no one is hurt.

  11. Nokia 3650 on Plain Cell Phones Fading Away? · · Score: 1

I used to believe that if a phone accepted and made calls it was exceeding my expectations. Then on a whim I bought a Nokia 3650, and I cannot live without it now. First of all I have installed Blacklist, which is an app that prevents me from getting ANY calls that I dont want. I have an extensive white list of people I accept calls from, anyone else gets voicemail. Also I installed an eBook reader, and I have all the Harry Potter books, the LOTR triology and At the Mountains of Madness on it, and I can read them any time. And I DO. The eBook is one of the most handy things of all. I also have some games for fun, and I use text messaging and WAP for a few things as well, such as scores, weather, etc...
    I love this phone.

  12. Its okay, Symbian is better on MIDP 2.0 Style Guide for J2ME · · Score: 1

I have the Nokia 3650, and while I am not a programmer, from a strictly end-user perspective, I prefer Symbian to the MIDP applications. Symbian just seems so much more solid, and it 'looks' more like the rest of the apps on the phone. MIDP works fine enough, I love MIDP-Man, which is an exact replica of Pac-Man. But I have purchased no MIDP apps (fortunately most are freeware), and I have purchased several Symbian apps.

Also you can tell the MIDP stuff is 'different'. Apps do not appear in the main menu of the phone, they are relegated to their own app folder. Still, if something looks useful enough, ultimately I dont care if it is Symbian or MIDP, just that it runs.

  13. How much loyalty do they give you? on Where Should Company Loyalty End? · · Score: 1

There was once a time when a person could expect to work for a company for life. That has changed over the years, as companies chose to save money by laying off employees instead of cutting high executive pay. This is fine, companies can choose to do this in the capitalist system, a system I love, but in return they get a workforce that is and SHOULD be looking out for itself. Ask yourself this: How loyal would they be to you if they needed to lay people off? How loyal would they be to you if cutting your job saved their bottom line? Answer that and you have your decision.

Anyone who has ever used a day planner or even a calendar will get use out of a Palm Pilot, Palm III, Palm IIIx or Palm V. Then there are the great freeware/shareware additions you can install. One of my favorites is Showtimes, which goes to Yahoo and downloads all local movies, locations and times in my city each time I sync, so I can pick a movie, a theater and time at the touch of a stylus. Or Convert, which will instantly convert weights, measurements, velocities, area, acceleration, computer, flow, force, length, mass power, pressure temp, torque, viscosity, volume, and dry volume.

I could go on, but I think I did enough already. I love my Palm V.
