And this compliment comes from someone who doesn't care much for most of Isreal's actions over the last three years. Not to mention I have close friends who would not only agree with the main parts of Mr. Transhuman's post, but also the original post comparing Ashcroft to Himmler.
I don't even know why this post was modded as flamebait. It is a rant of course, but nothing deserving flamebait.
Psymunn, I doubt we would agree on many political topics, but it would be a great and worthy argument.
You do realize that all the "Jim Crow" laws in the south, such as segragation, poll taxes, 'whites-only' businesses and public services, were enacted and supported by Democrats? The university president who denied admitance to black students was a democrat. The Democrat Party ruled the south after the Civil War. Republicans were not to blame for that.
You mention dragging blacks behind their pickups. Don't you realize most of the the members of the Ku Klux Klan are democrats? Working class people with an axe to grind are by far democrats in the US. That is the bulk of the KKK. How many republicans do you think were in those lynching parties back in the 'good old days' when no one got arrested for killing a black man?
As for me, I'd vote for the Libertarians this time, if they don't nominate another loser like in 2000. I think they are only playing with half a deck, but it's the half that leaves me the hell alone.
Well, I'll admit that I wrote that exact grammar mistake once in high school. It was for the first draft of a paper, and I never even noticed it as I wrote it. When I got the paper back the next day, those two words were circled. And I just sat there with a stupid look on my face wondering what the problem was. It took me at least 15 seconds to realize my mistake.
And this was back in the 80's, and in an area where public education still worked. And I also read several books a month back then, so it's not like I had any excuse like "Johnny can't read."
Damn, there I go again, making comparisons that are too complicated for nitwits to understand.
Once again: A murderer who robs a bank is still a murderer. A terrorist who kills soldiers is still a terrorist.
Especially a terrorist who goes to another country to kill anyone. Why are Syrians, Egyptians, Saudis, and other nationalities going to Iraq to kill US soldiers, Iraqi soldiers, civilian workers from around the world, common Iraqis, and civilian members of Iraqs government? It's not because they are members of Syria's, Egypt's or Saudi Arabia's armed forces, i. e. soldiers. It's because they are terrorists.
Now to deflate your balloon before you burst...
Yes, some of the people who are shooting at our troops are soldiers of the Iraqi military from the former government. They are fighting against what they consider an invading and occupying military force. They are doing so because they feel loyal to what they consider to be the only legitimate government for Iraq. They are not killing civilians. They are not planting roadside bombs or car bombs that kill civilians, especially Iraqi civilians. They are only fighting the enemy troops, as any soldier is supposed to.
But if they are working with the above mentioned terrorists, they are no longer just soldiers doing their job. They are not to be compared to the Japanese soldiers who didn't believe Japan surrendered, who lived in tunnels and caves on remote islands for decades, and still considered it their mission to kill enemy soldiers. If they are assisting terrorists, they should rightly be grouped with terrorists, and labelled as terrorists. If they are using terror techniques against non-military persons, they are terrorists. If they are assasinating civilians, they are terrorists. If they are doing none of this, they may still be just soldiers.
And we call ourselves the most intelligent species on the planet
That's because we didn't let the dolphins vote in the "Most intellegent species" election. But don't worry the ACLU and SPCA are going to court to demand a new election.
A murder who robs a bank is still a murder, not 'just a bank robber'.
A terrorist from Syria who went to Iraq in the last few months to kill American and Iraqi military forces, is still a terrorist, not 'just an insurgent'. Or do you say than the man who killed the Iraqi Minister recently is only an insurgent, even though he murdered a civilian member of the Iraqi government?
You probably think the 19 people on the planes were freedom-fighters too, eh?
Yes but since I don't know the public key for everyone who is trying to sell me penis enlargers, dirty photos, mortgages, or stock investments, I would not be able to read most of the messages in my inbox if encryption was the default.
I would still have to decrypt messages from my mother and sister so that I could read about angels, babies, black jokes, blonde jokes, redneck jokes, politician jokes, virus warnings that I am supposed to send to everyone I know, chain letters, and sentimental stories that would make lesser men cry. I would rather simply stop reading my email. Oh, wait, that's basically what I did. I usually check it about once a month, weed out the spam, and ignore the rest.
//...quick jump to my email station to check numbers...
I have 28 emails on my ISP's server waiting to download, and they will wait another week. I have 66 message in my inbox, 31 of them unread, and I have hundreds of 'archived' messages in several well-labeled folders, about 90% of them unread. I don't even bother anymore.
Just thinning the herd. After several weeks, it would be much easier to drive to town.
Of course that fleet of police cars with sirens blaring that would be following behind me might be part of the reason. Unlike TV shows, people here do pull over for vehicles with flashing lights.:)
Not having read the article, it's hard to see how one meteorite could bake animals on the other side of the world. After all, this impact wasn't during the Pangea time, when all of the land mass of the earth was joined in one great continent.
If this is true wouldn't there be a large carbon layer evenly distributed over the earth's surface from that time?
Hell, ours would have taken a couple a week, but you would never see me in them. Unless the camera was mounted in the back. Being the youngest of four kids, my normal 'spot' in our Chevy Chevette was the hatchback. Ever notice how the glass in a car's hatchback resembles a giant magnifying glass? Maybe not. But ride two hours there with the sun hitting you, and you would.
Actually, if we did have pictures like that, my parents would be in jail now for child abuse. But at least they never locked my in the trunk while going to a party.
"could you imagine the air-rage case if people carried concealed weapons "
Sure, there would be several dead air-ragers in the first week. Then nice, peaceful quiet. Hell, I would fly, just to get myself a trophy for my wall. Well, the family probably wouldn't let me keep the actual head, but I could get a wax copy made. That's a safari story for the grandkids.
Ask New Yorkers if a door that weighs the equivilant of five average men is too heavy, or too thick. The idea of saving weight/fuel is what makes everything in planes so flimsy now.
And what are the dimensions of the door, width and height?
But why aluminum? 1000 pounds of aluminum weighs the same as 1000 pound of cast iron. Which one sounds safer to you? (and much thinner.) I know, aluminum is stronger than iron for the hull of the plane, but that is a very thin sheet. Is a three-inch thick plate of aluminum stronger than a three-inch thick plate of iron?
No have the gas masks release anyway. The terrorist would have to stop every time they wanted to take a breath. That might be the best thing, so the passengers don't die if the pressure goes a littlt too low. Then the pilots from their outside-access-only and pressurized cockpit could bring it quickly down to a livable altitude. Or as quick as possible I mean to say, which won't be that quick.
But a group of a dozen could still either overpower one or two guards, or trick them. What if a group of three stood up, and one killed a stewardess with his dinner fork? The armed guard would shoot them, hopefully killing all three. But in the next half-second, two more people who happened to be seated near the guard jump him from behind, and kill him. If there are a dozen hidden terrorists scattered through the cabin, the chances of the undercover armed guard having his back to a nearby terrorist are very high.
The only real solution would be to have several guards on each flight. But there are three big problems with this.
1. Paying them, especially justifying it after five years of no more highjackings.
2. Getting the number of people to do a very possibly suicidal job.
3. Not letting the terrorist organizations find out who the armed guards are.
One more problem is that no one would hire an Arabic person for this position. Which would lead to civil right lawsuits, which would then doom the program as unconstitutional. All it would take for the law suit is one of the terrorist groups to send some of their unknown members to apply for the job, then file suit when they are all coincidentally not hired. (Even though they could demonstrate very impressive hand-to-hand combat and weapons skills, eh.)
I'm not being facetious here, just looking at what the most probable course of actions would be. The plan of having armed guards might seem fool-proof, but it only goes so far. And as far as the Isreali method, which many have referred to, I say this: How many planes do they have? There were as many as 4000 airplanes flying over the US at any one time one week ago. Plus another few thousand on the ground loading and unloading. Do you know how many armed guards that would be to have even just one on every flight?
On a side note, did anyone else notice the number of non-news channels that covered this? VH-1 in particular was covering it very early in the day. All four of the 'home-shopping' or QVC style channels I flipped past were not doing any programming, just a notice about the attacks. Later some started a news feed too. Later in the day other channels such as MT-V, Discovery, HGTV, etc either showed news feed or a notice about the attacks.
Some here hate large profit-based businesses, some here support them whole-heartedly, and most of us are somewhere in the middle. But I think it reflects on these stations, particularly the shopping channels, that they forgot about the profits they were loosing every second, and did a decent act. Even if the truth was they were unable to broadcast for technical reasons, if it was for any other reason such as a hurricane, they would have been on the air within an hour, feeding from another site.
While the most praise goes to the rescuers in NYC, I just wanted to say that this should be appreciated in its own perspective.
And you would rather have ole Slick Willy back during this?
Or a cardboard cutout of Gore standing infront of the WhiteHouse? (Because the real one would be over in NORAD mountain, making illigal campaign phone calls.)
After this, Bush will certainly be a great leader, because this country will be led out of this tragedy. Any way you slice it, unless he flips out, he will be a great leader. Just because you don't like his social opinions doesn't mean you have to cut him down now.
You can't run a country on what "some people think".
Some people think you shouldn't kill people, or rape people, or steal from people, or burn down someone's house. Other people don't think this way. So by your logic, all laws regarding these acts are now revoked.
Brilliant posting. Really. You put a lot of thought into it, I can tell.
That's actually a great memory for me, because I got my Legos from my Mom's friend, who was "sick and tired" of stepping on them. Since her kids didn't want to pick them up after playing with them, she gave them away.
So I got a 5-gallon metal tin of Legos. (Yeah, like a 5-gallon bucket, only metal, and not for storing water or dill pickles.) There were thousands of pieces. And everyone here is talking about following the instructions, or building the set once. I didn't have any instructions, and it definately wasn't one set.
I had many of the basic 2 X 2 blocks, of course. But also had some I haven't seen since. There were many round ones with 1 stud on top, which actually came back more with the sets. But I also had ones that were curved, in a 90 degree arc. Put four end to end, and they made a circle that was about 8 studs across. Very nice smokestack. Also had the ship hull pieces, but not any weights. Just put wheels on the bottom and rolled the ship on the floor. also had clear pieces. Not very see-through, but still cool.
My mom still has the bucket at home. She's given some away to kids, but there's still plenty left. And she says it's still mine, whenever I want to have it shipped to me.
Quoting an AC to everyone else know what I am replying to.
"everyone knows that the single stud flat piece is the fundamental atom in the Lego universe."
Is that a single stud flat circle, or single stud flat square? My barrel had both.

The term 'aboriginal' is okay with me.
But if 'abnormal' means 'not normal', than wouldn't 'aboriginal' mean 'not original'?
Did they have to drive from California to Boston for the ceremony?

People around you drive 55 in the fast lane? Here it's more like 25. On the interstate. With light traffic.
Good thing I don't carry guns in the truck, or there'd be some dead slowpokes around here.

Hey, thanks for the reply. Didn't know that the windows in the subway cars were that technical. I just figured they were just tempered glass panes.
The article says they have to remove the windows to prevent them from contaminating the water. What are the windows made of? Radioactive glass?
Although that would explain some of the people we see in the movies that ride those things all night long.
