I think what he didn't want is scaremongering, which is what this story is. The DNA swab is likely required in all cases to make sure they know who they have (or who's kid they have) in custody. Likely because of a lawsuit from someone who was held improperly, or in case of mistaken identity.

Lawsuits happen, the police get a new policy, and individual officers don't get to decide when they follow it, lest they get fired.

As to the kids' actions being completely innocent... I built a couple tree houses as a kid, but always on my parents' or one of the other participating kids' properties. I never in a million years would have expected that I could go into a park and start breaking limbs so I could build one there.

But then my parents taught me "not yours, don't touch." See, they didn't want the police picking me up for vandalism.

Seems that's not very important to parents anymore.

I still prefer Firefox, since I use Linux most of the time, but in cases where I'm forced to use IE, I find 7 beta much less annoying or inconvienient than its predicessors.

Meant to mention this. the whole concept was developed for manufacturing (which is the main purpose of my former employer, a Hearing Aid manufacturer). For that purpose it does have a use. It's still abused there to try to create a manual to eliminate the need for skilled workers.

It's been expanded to IT and Software, as well as other purposes for which it is not suited. These are professions that require actual expertise, rather than the ability to mindlessly and accurately follow a set of instructions.

Every place I've ever encountered ISO-9000, it's been more insideous. It's been a way of trying to get the skilled workers to document everything they did into an instruction manual so that unskilled workers could be hired off the street and "follow the ISO-9000 docs" to get the job done.

A previous employer tried to get me to do that (write ISO 9000 docs) so that he could hire my replacement at an even lower rate than he was paying me. I was working IT as a network administrator right out of college.

Eve is open-pvp for the most part. It's designed more for player oriented solutions.

Most people do not play PvP all the time. I rarely will play PvP in a MMO. I am not interested in competing or trying to ruin someone else's night.

Sane people do not pay a fee to play a game where they will be locked into the role of "victim". That's what griefers are looking for. Not "villainous roleplay", and DAMNED SURE not a fair fight. They want someone to pick on. They want to see how many people they can make QUIT.

In MOST games, it behooves the company running the game to boot "villainous roleplayers" who attempt to interfere with non-consenting players in a non-PvP situation. I'm not interested in being your victim, and I'm not interested in providing you with entertaiment at my expense, without my consent.

I'm paying a fee for my own entertainment, and to interact on my terms. Interfere with that, and damned straight I'm going to demand that Customer Service do something about you.

I'm DEFINITELY not considering EvE. It's a technically beautiful game, and the tutorial was excellent.

I'm not interested in PvP though.
