That's double dipping. They GOT their royalty once, they're not entitled to it again. They're not entitled to it on a CD I sell to a store. They're not entitled to a second helping if I make a copy to play in the car (I won't risk getting my originals stolen). They're not entitled to it if I rip to MP3 and play it on my jukebox (no I don't share files, but I don't want to buy 300 gigs of storage for all my CDs in WAV format.
I'd say the Used CD store owners should SUE them en-masse if they try to charge it. Furthermore, if I owned a used/new CD shop, I'd STOP CARRYING NEW CDS ENTIRELY. Just sell used.
Thank god the only new CD I've wanted to buy in the last few years is the new RUSH cd. Now that I've bought that, I can comfortably boycott the industry. I already HAVE the music I care about.
Hrmm, well my Archos jukebox lets me do whatever I want with my mp3s, so I don't have to bother with wma.One reason I stayed away from the Nomad. I'd like to see a good disk based portable do ogg vorbis though...
groke already covered the other stuff I wanted to say (VCD/SVCD format, centropy doesn't generally release crappy caps) , but I did want to compliment your choice of Red Dwarf lyrics in your sig.
After I started on DVDs Red Dwarf was the only series I bothered buying VHS for, because I REALLY wanted to see what I had been missing and the DVD was nowhere to be found.
Thanks! For some reason I thought Gateway had started in Kansas. Must have to do with the fact that my sister lives there and she's got a fascination with the spotted cow pattern that they use on their boxes...:)
The problem I have with that is that I, as a ReplayTV owner, am not specifically named as a party in the case. I refuse to cede my right to privacy as a member of a class. What's next, certain "classes" of citizens are ordered to wear a special symbol so that the court can gather "anonymous" but uniquely identifiable data "in case" they are found guilty of a crime?
Further, SonicBlue may state in their documentation that they "reserve the right to collect" such information, but I cannot be coerced to cede my right to privacy through contract. They can't reserve the right to my information, because that right is not theirs in the first place, and _I_ have already reserved it.
It's a provision of their "clickthrough" that they are more than welcome to attempt to get enforced in court. I'd be happy to add to the (already existant) legal prescident that click through "contracts" are not enforcable where they are unreasonable and contradictory to Constitutional rights.
Basically, the MPAA et al can kiss my ass. They want information about how I use MY property, they can damn well get a court order that names me specifically as a defendant (for which they'd need some proof to support the request), otherwise they can fuck off.
I agree, but if Apple wants to seem sincere, I think they should openly and specificly request that the culprits be prosecutted under the patriot act. I don't own a Mac anymore, but if one of my boxes was damaged by one of these mis-represented discs, I'd be talking to regional FBI very quickly. I don't HAVE a regular CD player, just my home theatre PC. I have no interest in sharing what I've payed for with others, but goddamnit if I've payed for it, I want to play it on my theatre system or my car MP3 player (I hate changing discs so I have my whole collection on the player for play in the car)
RIAA: crash my hardware or worse destroy it with your little schemes, and I'll have you up on terrorism charges tout suite
The title of the Alan Dean Foster book you're refering to was "Splinter of the Mind's Eye" (at least in the states) In retrospect it's a bit disturbing, as it explores potential romance between Luke and Leia (who we didn"t know at the time were brother and sister) I'll allow that Foster (who previously had written excellent novellizations of the Star Trek animated series) was also unaware.
Except that two of my three PVR rigs aren't ReplayTV's they're computers that _I_ built. They're not reporting anything to anyone I don't WANT them to report to (Linux firewalls are a wonderful thing).
If "they" attempt to change my single Replay 2020 (upgraded to 100GB space) based on the order of some pissant magistrate in LA, in violation of current legal prescident (Sony v. Betamax, etc) I'll fight.
About the Start button issue. Why would they care? is Microsoft planning on using the Start button to deliver advertising? Why is control of the Start button important to them if the OS is already Windows?

Sears spun their Homelife stores off just a year before the chain went bankrupt, taking many consumers money for ordered furniature with it, including mine. Sears still owned stock in Homelife, but protested that they had no obligation to Homelife customers. It's pretty clear to me that Sears knew what was up and spun the Homelife bit off to avoid getting dirty.
I will never do business with any Sears affiliated business again, and if a jaywalker is anyone known to be a Sears corporation employee, I won't brake.
I got 2/3 of my money back, but still lost 2 grand to those bastards. I'm sure I'm not the only hosed customer that will badmouth Sears every time it's brought up in conversation for the rest of my life.
Worse than that. They're SELECTIVELY not-honoring the price. Some people get it, some people don't. There's documented proof. I've never had a problem there, but I hope there's lots of pain and suffering ahead for the manager of that store in particular, and the marketing weasels that perpetrated this in the first place in general.

Well there's that, and filing a false police report. (seems they backpedaled on the fradulant reciept once he was at the police station and decided it was criminal tresspass when he was never asked to leave). I'd personally insist on the manager being arrested on charges of filing a false police report. From what I've read, the man should be fired and his most important phrase in his next career should be "would you like fries with that?"
I'd own me a Best Buy store if this happened to me. Then I'd bulldoze it and sell the lot.

Thanks for the info. To be honest, I didn't shop much. I didn't expect the cost to be linear, so I wasn't expecting $1500 for 50 meters or anything, just figured it would cost more than copper.
Well... copper is cheaper than fiber for the moment. I'd hate to think what my 50 meter run from my router to the second floor of my townhouse would cost if it was fiber.
I use optical runs for my audo as well, but those are all under a meter, for the most part, and around $30 or so a piece. Not too much money for the purpose, but I dont' think I'd enjoy paying for a 50 meter run. Never mind the cost of devices with optical interfaces.
That said, I guess the only reason I'd consider GB copper is that it's no more expensive than 100 base-T...

I believe MS would prefer that .mp3 go away so that they can sell .WMA supporting hardware... complete with DRM. That's the impression I get anyhow.

One of my favorite movies of all time and I did not know that. Comes from not living in So. Cal, I guess. Cool, thanks for clarifying that.
Yes, and the complaint quite plainly spells out WHY they name ReplayTV/SonicBlue as defendants. If you actually read the complaint, that is.

Sounds good, but wrong. (I've read the novelizations, he's Anakin's step brother.)
I remember that scene in the Marvel Comics adaptation, FWIW.

Cool, thanks. I'll look around more next time. I still think it's more expensive than copper, I'd love to find out differently.
