This is a problem that affects all Android phones. People will complain about battery life and it is usually caused by one or two poorly designed apps they downloaded off the market. Quality apps don't have this problem.
Regardless, what is it with the insane trend to build smaller and smaller phones with tinnier and tinner non-interchangeable batteries that act more and more like a full blown PC than a phone and so hold their charge for a day or less. The marketing nonsense has to stop. I would much rather a bigger bulkier phone - thickness circa a decade ago - that I could confidently use without having to recharge for 3 days, even if it is running a crap app. If you're plugged into a wall charger it's no longer a mobile phone!
Only problem is, Motoblur is the application that will drain 35 percent of the phone's power and you can't get rid of it. Its sluggish and a power hog.
Motoblur? I had to re-read to check whether that was the real name of the app or a play on the name. That is a shockingly bad name. It rivals GIMP. Who the fuck wants blurred anything on their phone??? Does the fucking phone move too quickly leaving the user behind? Is it drunk or hung over with blurry vision? Does it blur your screen making you wonder if you're drunk or need to see your doctor? Who the fuck comes up with these SHIT names and thinks they're grand???
I hear this explanation for why MMO are a waste of time, but in reality what are you bringing away from any gaming experience? If you are playing these games to enrich your life beyond some entertainment and socialization then you should take some time for serious introspection.
Why bother? Because you enjoy it.
Playing the game is fun. You can even learn (especially from a simulator). Creating content is generally a pain in the arse. Why bother? Because then you can use what you've created and share it with others...in theory for life. Only problem is, if a the game is killed off, or the format of the content changes with every version, all that effort is wasted....unless you put in a whole lot more effort updating your content for the next version or another game.
See the problem with that is you are an atypical example. Most children, treated like an adult in terms of responsibility etc, would not thrive. That said it is true that we talk down to children too much.
Exactly. I can have the shittiest day ever, and when I walk in the door and my kid runs up to me excited to see me saying 'Dad! Dad! Dad!' everything else disappears.
That's excellent, but if someone doesn't feel that way, does that automatically make them an asshole? I think we spend too much time assigning blame for people that are different. What counts is that you make an effort for your children and love and support them. How you feel just doesn't come into it. If you can get pleasure out of it, fantastic. But you are the adult and they are the helpless clueless life you brought into the world and are responsible for nuturing.
All I can say, is "they're doing it wrong." If a child doesn't increase your happiness, you either had the child at the wrong point in your life, you weren't prepared for the supposed negative aspects.
Some people are never prepared for the negative aspects, and there's nothing supposed about them. Not everyone would be happy being a mechanic, so why would everyone be happy being a parent? "They're doing it wrong" is unhelpful. The job just doesn't suit some, and by the time they discover that their choice is to either be self centered assholes or take care of their children anyway, despite the sacrifice.
Amen to that. I'm tired all the time, my spare time is shot to hell. I can't schedule video game time reliably anymore, and travel is Highly Inconvenient. The house is a mess and I'm always stressed. All of that is worth it when my kid gives me a big squeezy hug, and watching my kid's joy unfold is pure magic.
I love my children dearly and wouldn't swap them for anything, but I still hate all the sacrifices. I'm kinda tired of the idea that a hug has to fix everything and make it alright. Some of us just aren't built that way. And sometimes the hugs can be few and far between (think military service, not my situation though).
It's more than just that. Eventually the MMO or any other game for that matter gets dumped and you're left with nothing that you can still use for your efforts.
For example take a look at one of the longest running non-MMO series - Microsoft Flight SImulator. One day there was a financial crsis and a change of management and the next thing you know the whole series has been dumped. So all the time 3rd party developers and enthusiasts spent creating content is all for nothing. (Not to mention each version brough major changes that required further redevelopment effort for a lot of the 3rd party content). Now FSX and FS2004 are still around for now and still run on the current OS, but without further development that will not be the case for too many more years. The game has been abandoned. Any effort you put into creating content no longer has any lasting benefit. And for some content we're talking thousands of man hours. So why bother exactly?
>Now ask them if they could, would they give up their children for someone rich and successful to raise.
Pfft, how unscientific. Of course they wouldn't but that's just their genes talking, merely programming unalterably hardwired into the system. It has little bearing on the truth of the matter.
I seriously doubt you're a parent. Parents can be selfish too. I think you'll find most parents actually like their children and don't want to part with them. That's affection not genes.
here is a TED talk that takes that first data point on decreased happiness and digs deeper.
Yeah, the time and effort sucks. It ages you. It can make you unhappy. Now ask them if they could, would they give up their children for someone rich and successful to raise. I don't see them adopting their children out.
There is value in their analysis but their conclusions are crap. The value lies in breaking the expected stereotypical social norms and allowing parents to say "no, it wasn't a fairytale romance the minute I picked up my son/daughter". "No it hasn't always brought me untold bliss. Some days I want to scream". What we should be looking at is decreasing the bullshit and providing better support groups where parents help each other so they do not feel alone. Concluding with "children make you unhappy" is just not helpful - certainly not to people who've already had kids. And while they try not to do this, I think the ending is the weakest part of their presentation. (The data and analysis isn't the best either, but as I said it has some value).
Data show that having children decreases happiness. They also eat a lot of your time (which could be better spent doing science) and they're extremely expensive (scientists don't get paid that much). Knowing this, why would anyone who respects data have children?
Because: - They don't believe the data - Scientists are curious and want to experience things for themselves - They or their partner have a biological urge that it would make them even less happy not to fulfil - They wish to pass their knowledge and expertise to someone - Even scientists are not entirely rational beings. We're all just a species of monkey in the end.
If you can afford having children, the unhappiness comes from the overwhelming demands on your time. (Even that could be mitigated to a degree if you can afford to hire a Nanny). The nature of those demands changes as the child grow up. I will tell you this. Though my wife and I have had a very rough trot raising these kids (our own chronic and ongoing medical issues), neither of us for one moment would prefer that they had not existed (2 children under 3). And I'm not saying that just to be politically correct. I'm happy to admit that it took me time to warm to my children (but I always felt a very strong protective instinct). The idea that you just fall in love with them the moment you pick them up was bunk for me. But I do love them dearly now.
If those biological urges did not exist, neither would nearly 7 billion people...Any species that outsmarts it self in the way you are suggesting will perish, and won't be around to have this conversation. I do not see that happening any time soon. Even the poor people of the world who can't afford children are driven by social and biological needs (and often a lack of education) to have them.
- It's irresponsible throwing away a paying job on a dream if you have a family depending on you. Fear and self doubt are about self preservation (and the preservation of your kids!). What you have to do is either take an opportunity if there's no longer a paying job to fall back on, or continue with the full time job while you slowly build up your other work.
- As for equipment (mixers etc.) not mattering, it all depends on the work. It's the same in photography or any other profession where tools are used. Using the wrong tools for the job is a recipe for frustration. For example (since I know photography better) photographing fast sports with a point and shoot would be maddening and you wouldn't get results that were any good. HOWEVER you can stay within the limits of even cheap equipment and enjoy experimentation and good results.
Btw my favourite song of yours is "I'm Your Moon". (I have a masters in astronomy, and love the sentiment). I might like the Portal theme more if I ever get round to playing Portal but as it stands my only exposure is hearing the song and what I read on Wikipedia.
Except the MCAT doesn't give you a license, it is an entrance exam to medical school. Cheating on it is similar to cheating on the SAT.
Yes, I'd already said that in the last paragraph of my previous post. It also means that someone who did better doesn't get to go to college and the cheater does instead.
The most important thing is to get him laid. Take him to european countries for as many months as you can legally stay for, and force him to approach girls and women again and again.
So the plan is if he gets rejected often enough, he'll just spontaneously turn into a computer programmer???
Since when does cheating on an exam result in criminal charges????
Since it could put lives in danger. Cheating on an exam for a pilot's license for instance would get you into similar trouble. (So could lying about your current qualifications as a pilot or experience). That's a glamorous example but basically any specialized job which requires qualifications, if you lie about them, could land you with a criminal record. And it makes sense. You don't want someone not qualified as an engineer designing a bridge. You don't want someone who doesn't know what they're doing with gas pipes installing a gas water heater. The potential for death and injury is just too high.
The only difference in this case is that it's a college entrance exam, not one for getting accredited or qualified, as others have pointed out. Still, I don't think someone cheating to get in is going to go straight and stop cheating once they are in.
This. Border guards have a hardon for smartphones. Leave your laptop behind too. What I'm trying to figure out is why anyone in their right mind would cross our border willingly, for a vacation no less.
There are some things in the U.S. and Canada I'd have like to have seen (and photographed!) before I died. Niagra falls, The Grand Canyon, Yosemite, The Canadian Rockies. But I am very much put off by the idea of being finger-printed and possibly having some TSA agent's bad day turn into my bad lifetime or having my things seized and not returned. And now that I have a family it's not just me that I have to think of. I can imagine entering into some twilight reality where my 3 year old talking back to a TSA agent results in him being injured or us all being held indefinitely. So though I'm only in my mid 30s, and my children will grow up, I doubt that I will ever be able to justify a trip to the US to see these things. I'm not the only one. C'est la vie.
Their methodology was atrocious, their so-called university affiliation was denied by the college, and they used unethical research practices. this is NOT science; it is GARBAGE.
You want the truth? You can't handle the truth! If they listed midgets and goatse.cx too high up people would have an aneurysm:-)

Of course it's always a bad idea. If you make a name for yourself as someone who complains about doctors, no doctor will treat you unless they are absolutely legally required to do so.
The medical profession is just SHIT. They hold all the knowledge, equipment, and legally required credentials but treatment is unscientific because the systems favours bad self interested doctors. The standard of care is terrible. Really the only way to be safe is to never be sick, but that's not under your control. Medical associations are run like a union based of the collective interests of the doctors and ignoring the patients interests. Then they whine and moan when people self-diagnose.
One of the worst things is that they restrict their numbers to achieve artificial scarcity, guaranteeing high rates. They do this under the guise of only accrediting after a very thorough process but in reality its' all about the money. They're even willing to do ridiculous hours to achieve this scarcity. If you drove a truck for 16 hours straight you'd be thrown in prison, but a doctor or nurse doing those hours is par for the course.
We've had distributed computer networks for decades now. We've used them for scientific research for as long as we have had them. "Cloud" computing is just marketing nonsense. Not every distributed network is some global monster that's going to go sentient and send our killer robots.
