I don't even own a goddamned smartphone or anything that can even be 'locked' in the first place, or that can even access the internet (I specifically disable it's limited ability to do so as a matter of course), there's not even anything of value on it that cops couldn't get from the phone company. Be my guest, though, officer, and rough me up, intimidate me, and otherwise violate my civil rights. Then I won't have to work again a day in my life after I sue your department, the city/state/federal goverment, and perhaps you, for doing so, and win millions of dollars.

Since it sounds to me like you're not in the U.S.: sorry to hear that your country doesn't have civil rights worth a damn.

ICEs have to become obsolete sooner rather than later; fossil fuel use needs to end sooner rather than later. Waiting for it to become scarce is too long to wait. Electric ground vehicles are the future and the world needs to embrace it not fight against it. The sooner it's widely adopted as standard the sooner R&D into things like energy storage will be ramped up, facilitating electric vehicle production, adoption, and price reduction.

  17. They used to say the same about our bodies on Old People Can Produce As Many New Brain Cells As Teenagers (independent.co.uk) · · Score: 1
Much of the belief that older people "can't do this" and "can't do that" anymore is societal beliefs and not based in science.
For instance too many people still believe that someone over, say, 40 years of age "can't build muscle" and "can't be physically fit" and "can't lose weight and will just get fat and stay fat" but that's all been disproven over and over again whether anyone wants to believe it or not -- it just requires you to be willing to do the work and suffer through the training to attain a level of fitness, lose excess weight, and so on. Furthermore this myth is perpetuated by older people who are inherently lazy to begin with, who use age as an excuse to not make the effort -- and in the process, become "crabs in a bucket" to their peers as often as not, not wanting others in their age group to better themselves, so making them look bad in the process.

So it logically follows that your brain, being just more protoplasm like the rest of your body, follows the "use it or lose it" rule: if you don't challenge your brain, keep learning new things, keep thinking, and just let it sit there being useless, of course it'll just rot away to nothing.

Also: since the rest of the systems of your body are in essence the support system for your brain, keeping the rest of your body physically fit as a lifestyle will enable your brain to function at a higher level of efficiency -- much as the featured article alludes to:

However, the researchers also noted fewer blood vessels and connections between cells in the older brains, which Ms Boldrini said "may be linked to compromised cognitive-emotional resilience" in the elderly.

Keep the support mechanisms in good working order, and your brain will likely be in better shape as you age.

Better get on that treadmill, or bike, and get into the weight room a few days a week, folks. ;-)

  18. Why can a child learn a new language easily while older brains can't?

I was a teenager in the 80's and the first computer I ever owned was one I built myself literally on perfboard and wrote my own code for.
Since then we've got computers you can't 'build' that way, you can only buy pre-made PCBs and install them on a pre-made motherboard, and while there's Linux (which means you can theoretically write your own OS) and you can write your own software, too, for 99.9% of everyone there's no point anymore.
We've also since then got the Internet, which started out as a great thing with incredible potential.
But since then all the above has been subverted by corporations, governments, and criminal organizations, into spying, controlling, and evil things. None of it is really any 'fun' anymore, it's all about either money, control, or both.
If I thought I could make a decent living at it, I'd walk away from all of it and go be a forest ranger or something, and just ride my bikes and forget all about all of it.

There are so many problems with a 'flying car' that it's not practical to build, and the majority of those problems are safety concerns, mainly safety of people on the ground. ..although I just came up with a bizzarre idea for that: how about a gigantic airbag, or series of airbags, that deploy outside the vehicle? Kind of like the landing system used on that one Mars probe? You're going to crash, they deploy, and you just bounce around until you come to a halt on the ground somewhere.
