YA, sensationalist bullshit on behalf of slashdot. Oooh, lets say windows is being like linux, people will read that!
The article only mentions unix once, and in no way relates the permissions system to that of Unix/Linux. Going to rwx user/group/all would be a serious step back in regards to the ACLs currently available to Windows users. Now forcing apps to be designed around restricted users and providing adequate facilities to do this is definitely a move in the right direction, but has nothing to do with Unix/Linux.
Everytime I've been prompted to verify wether or not my copy of windows is genuine it's been clear that it wasn't required and I could easily side step it. This also goes against everything they've said so far about the program, ie: they have no plans of making it manditory.
Their corperate customers have asked them to schedule updates in this manner unless they absolutely must be pushed out in a hurry. MS previously released weekly on Tuesdays, now due to input from large corperate customers who like to plan downtimes and patches they do it once a month.
Perhaps because it's already readilly available to anyone following the marcuscom ports tree? Mine finished building sometime last night after about 10pm.
You're seriously misguided in the requirements. Any recent desktop machine will do. If you have a lot of load and you can't stomach buying a decent server ($4k should be way more than adequate) maybe you should reconsider how serious your operation is.
You can run the snapshot available in the ports tree. It's the latest 4.3.xxx prior to 4.4 release. It works with my 9600 and is patched properly for freebsd.
Andy: Consider the people and the medium. You've got a lot of adolescents, and young adults with minimal if any social life. The interaction is not going to be on the same level as people with broader social experience. Considering that, and the ability to cripple a medium-sized ISP, there's going to be relationship issues, especially when you throw the sparse quantity of girls into the mix.
So what's the difference between script kiddie culture and slashdot culture?
And is this a report on script kiddie culture or a blatant jab at MS? This roblimo guy is about as subtle as FoxNews.
I wasn't able to boot my SunFire V120 with a 5.2 release disc. Gentoo was the only thing that seemed to offer full support for such hardware. I've been fairly impressed with gentoo since I started this task.
Because files in use by the shell are locked and require a reboot to replace them. Don't start bitching about your uptime either, people stopped caring about that dicksize war many years ago. Availability != uptime.
What kind of computer equipment and software do I need for Online Banking?
You need a computer, modem, Internet access and one of the following recommended Internet browsers: Netscape 6.2 and higher or Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 and higher. You can use either a Macintosh or a Windows computer.
Looks like they don't want to deal with Linux users.
If you're comparing to 4.x then yes it's most likely GCC 3.3 creating the slow builds. However I believe there's still additional debugging options enabled in the default make.confs.
I've not come across a single app that won't run. What sort of apps are you finding problems with? Which build are you running?

SMP in 4.0 was on par with Linux's support in 2.4. 5.0 is once again on par with Linux 2.6. What problems do you know of?

Congratulations, you're the first person I know who has had problems with Service Pack 2.
1) It's Tuesday not Monday; afternoon rather than morning as they seem to release about noon time PST.
2) This is a repeat.
Welcome to two weeks ago.
This is just great evidence for how far downhill Slashdot's gone.
Thanks for doing your part to keep it that way.

"RIAA Sues More Music Lovers"
I guess that sounds a little nicer than the truth. "RIAA Sues More People Who Habitually Break the Law"

Just like there would be no need for kernel revs other than 2.4, 2.6, etc, right? Nothing ever needs patching except Windows, right?
So you're the one giving my address out to everyone. You prick, my mailbox is always full because of you!
Congratulations, even Linux users can figure out Windows now.

token-ring ethernet
That's like saying Linux XP. Besides, token-ring was IBM.
cd /usr/src && make update

Name a piece of hardware you have that FreeBSD doesn't support.
thanks
