For liberal arts classes, One Note absolutely rocks. You can record the lecture while you type and the recording is indexed according to your typing. You can go back later, click on your notes and tada, the lecture comes up at the appropriate time. VERY, VERY cool stuff.

For Math/Science, I think you would need a tablet to work effectively and be completely electronic. Drawing with a pad just doesn't work to well.

  7. The universe is an illusion ... on No Time Travel, Sorry · · Score: 1

The universe is an illusion of your perception. That perception is created within your own mind.

Yes everything is real. But the REAL universe is very different from the image your mind constructs. We think of matter as something real and tangible. In reality we do not see matter at all. If we could, there would be virtually nothing to see. Everything would be transparent. We see and percieve FORCES and ENERGY, not matter.

And if you're schizophrenic, you also notice god talking to you all time ;-) Whether or not god is actually real is immaterial, it is part of your perception, hence it is part of you universe.

I'll add that in this scenario Marty travels back in time in front of the mall and never reappears. He leaves that timeline and moves to a new one. Doc presumably dies because that Doctor Brown never received Marty's warning about the terrorists and didn't wear a bullet proof vest.

The movies did contain one thing that seemed inconsistent with reason. When they left Jennifer on the porch of the house that WAS her's in the original timeline, she should have stayed in the town ruled by Biff.

Of course, that was governed by the rule of "It's really hard to write Jennifer into the 50s comic book plot and the BTTF 3 plot, so let's just leave her on the porch."

  9. His arguments are self contradictory ... on No Time Travel, Sorry · · Score: 1

While I sympathize with his notion on space-time not being independent of matter, he asserts that all positions are absolute. The problem is, to have absolute location, you need an absolute substrate on which to place. In which case everything is always moving, so you would have to express all position as quadratic vectors.

The universe is indeed a strange place. Physicists are NOT cracked. They know full well that their work is incomplete as they are all in some way or another searching for grand unification. No doubt, it will be the result of newly observed phenomenon which may spawn new forces which will require an even grander unification.

That SE VGA app you pointed to is REALLY stupid. Why would you want to run a QVGA app on a quarter of your screen for the sake of the goofy claim that it is NOW being rendered in a VGA space?

  11. This can be remedied ... on SGI Warns That Bankruptcy Might Be Year-End Option · · Score: 1

This can all be remedied with $10 worth of spray paint and a decal.

SGI has been living in a bygone era. They literally are the modern mainframe.

Once upon a time, SGI sat in the drivers seat for providing services and software to an eager market. Instead, they relied on selling outrageously over-priced proprietary hardware while their competitors chiselled away at their market by selling toys that eventually were more sophisticated than anything SGI could offer.

And what about the software? 3rd parties have all swooped in and developed 3D graphics suites. So SGI is effectively cutoff from the Sega escape, become a software only company.

SGI is now in "startup" mode. They have to find a new business. I don't know why anyone would want to buy SGI. It has no consumer level brand recognition. The kind of people who buy high end workstations are immune from the stickers on the cases.

Best case, somebody comes in and buys the rights to brand their Graphics cards as SGI. The rest of SGI is relegated to a service shop for the dwindling number of SGI users.

Linux/Intel is the future of high end rendering.

Unless you're editing a movie, it really doesn't make sense considering time as a an axis. It's almost as if time is a cohesion of forces expressed cumulatively across all forces in the universe. As objects move, the relative difference in forces expresses a change. That is time.

So perhaps time would be best understood not as a straight line, but as water sloshing around in a bathtub.

Another aspect of space-time may be a non-uniform fabric. We understand gravity as a curvature of space time. Perhaps there are multiple space times expressed via the three of the fundamental forces. Different fundamental particles are either affected or immune via these overlapping space-times. Particles affect one another via strong nuclear forces. These particles in turn affects the behavior of the whole as expressed across the three space times: gravity, electro-magnetism and weak nuclear.

    Those were my thoughts.

  19. My thoughts on Incredibles 2 ... on Toy Story 3 Scrapped · · Score: 1

You would move forward a few years.

I think you would have Violet in college. Violet's (or PhaseForce (think of some other hero name)) relationship with her mother would be very strained as most of them are. This would be right before Violet goes off to college where some of her new classmates are actually part of a new super-hero team.

Violet has to find her way in this new world. She would see her forging a new relationship with Edna, and we would see Edna pushing her buttons to do things and actually getting her to rebel even more against her mother.

At the same time, the Incredibles would be hosting a new youngin' and training them. This would set up mixed mixed emotions of jealously for the attention that Helen is giving on her new protege. At the same time, the tension between mother and daughter are still there.

Violet's team would be let by one of the few supers that Syndrome didn't find. This person would be someone that Helen NEVER liked and doesn't approve of. He will be somewhat of a nare-do-well and frankly, somewhat of a lech.

Dash (he needs a Hero name to (say Double Time)), will be experiencing the pain of comparing to his younger and obviously more talented little brother. He will be acting out even more and getting the group into trouble.

We will find out that Mirage isn't just a name. She always had the power to affect people's perceptions. She is an excellent manipulator. And given her turning against Syndrome and her experience tracking down supers, she will be with the Super agency and possibly even vying to replace Carl (or whatever the old guys name is). Mirage is inherintely good had heart but still capable of mischief. Mirage's presence in the Super Hero agency bugs Helen to no end.

Bob's challenge will be his role as the "uber-hero" in this new era. He will find out that there are too many demands on his time. Even more than in the "good ole days". Bob will be moving around coaching the new super-hero squads, and of course Mirage will be involved with all those introductions.

The resolution to all this comes when the new "threat emerges" as a super-powerfu l new super. Mr Incredible must lead the Incredibles and two other new teams to face this new threat. He (maybe she) will be a hotshot with extra-ordinary powers and friends in high places.

What, maybe Buzz's voice box goes out? That's already been covered. He'll go up on the shelf with squeaky and Mom will buy him another deluded Buzz Lightyear doll.

The people who have no right to vote for their leaders are COMPLETELY removed from the process. They are children of the state. And eastern culture is quite clear. The children serve the parents, not the other way around.

China's embrace of unregulated capitalism (save protecting the state) is far more disturbing than communism. Planned economies do not work and it creates a large incentive for disaffected masses to rebel. However the introduction of a token middle class could have a tendency to short circuit the whole affair as anger against the state is redirected against the guy one step up the ladder (bugeouise) rather than the people sitting at the top.
