Let's be realistic about this. How many companies hire a PR firm and say "Go ahead, make whatever campaign you want. Don't even worry about approval, I'm sure you will do a good job." This is esp. true with a company that does as much marketing as Microsoft. This was at some point presented to Microsoft and they approved it. It's that simple. No PR firm would blow a contract with a corporation like MS by not checking the campaign with them. It just doesn't make sense.

I have to disagree with you on at least one of your points. A retail chain deciding not to carry it in no way goes against freedom. I think you are confused on what freedom in this case entails. Every company can choose what they do and do not sell as long as it's a legal product. They have the freedom to make their choice on their inventory. If the government wanted to ban this game then you would have an issue, but not every store will carry exactly what you want. That's why there are other stores that will pick up that demand if it is big enough. This is capitalism. If you are upset Walmart won't carry this then feel free to boycott them all you want and cast your vote with your wallet, but if a store doesn't want to carry something because they disagree with it they are more than free to do so.

The reason you don't know the root password is that the root account is not enabled. Apple ships their OS without a root account activated, which IMHO is a good thing for someone (most of their user population) who doesn't know what root is and shouldn't be running it anyway. I am unsure why you would be happier that your Admin account would be the same as running root since it's pretty widely accepted that is a bad idea to run with full priviledges all the time. Anyway back to your problem, use sudo to execute commands with root priviledges. It will prompt you for a password and you just use your normal Admin one. If for some reason you feel the need to have root enabled you can do it in netinfo.

The point is that flying a plane into a civilian structure, and bombing military installations are different things. Even if the same number of civilians get killed the debate is the means more than the end. The US military has tried not to kill any civilians, while the terrorists made it a point to kill civilians. The fact that civilians died is sad, and ideally wouldn't happen, but this is the real world and not everything works ideally.

These things are great. We have a few at the school I work for and there is only one problem that I see with them and that is that they don't get used enough. This seems to be true of the school I work at as well as others in our school district. Many, not all, teachers simply refuse to use the technology available. It is the same thing with our airport computer lab (15 ibooks in a cart for checkout). Until teachers start using the technology being developed on a regular basis I don't think they will have that big of an impact on schools.

Note: This is not taking anything away from the these boards. They are really cool IMHO.

Because of people trying to understand science many diseases have been cured along with a number of other very positive impacts on humanity. God also did another thing, and that is giving humans a mind that can think and figure these things out, why would God have done that if he had no intention of us learning about the world. Also while I do believe in God you have to recognize that other people may not, and although I don't agree with them I do agree that it is their choice.

He didn't say he loved dealing with people or their questions, and while I would say that most people have more tact I would say that all of us feel the same way at least sometimes. I think that NetBSD had a good reason for not wanting him as a core member, because it speaks for the group and it's my understanding core deals with more of the politics/coordination of things. I think it is fair to say that this area is not Theo's strong point, however it did seem rediculous how reluctant they were to let him have CVS. Several of the e-mails were people from core saying that they would at least give him that if he promised to communicate and not to flame, which he did with the exception of in his own personal e-mails. I thought that sounded reasonable, but the way it dragged on wasn't IMHO. Either way things have worked out, Theo has his own BSD to do with as he pleases, and many people have very secure boxes because of it. I think sometimes people forget that people writing this software do it just for themselves and their feelings of accomplishment, not so much for other people.

    b) The net is not something that I think will be damaged by this, it is an open network reguardless of how some people/countries use it. If Saudi Arabia blocks themselves from viewing parts doesn't mean they are no longer there for the rest of the world, once again not umpacting anyone but themselves.
    c) Some companies can decide not to sell to them for moral reasons, but I think it is ok for them to sell it because it is not a company's, or anyone else's for that matter, responsibility to force their beliefs on anyone else.

I am a network admin for a school district and we have people on every campus, most of which know at least enough linux to handle an install if we told them what software to install, etc. Granted my district is pretty big and has a decent amount of money so we probably have a little better tech personel than many districts, but I don't think it would be that hard. By the way I have to admin a few mac machines and I do it using a Mac program running on Mac on Linux, so it is definately possible to use those types of things like that and wine.

While I do agree that censorship is not good, this is a situation we really have no say in. Saudi Arabia is not the US. Our people and our leaders can't make calls for other countries. We have done that type of thing in the past, sometimes for good reasons, sometimes not. The bottom line is that blocking porn, and maybe some controversial sites is not as bad as killing someone. Do I think that they should be able to look at porn? Yes I do, however as many people noted previously there are several ways to get around this filter (other countries ISP and such). Now back to the comment I am replying too. Although I think it would be a bad thing for people to not write this type of software. What about places this has very legitimate uses. In elementary schools where kids have access to the net. Do we want those kids going to . I certainly wouldn't want my kids at that age to do that, so the software has a purpose. Also, the US is a capitalist economy, based on supply and demand. Even though I agree that you shouldn't work at something you don't believe in, saying that if person Z doesn't do it someone else will is a very accurate statement. If there is money to be had someone will do it bottom line.
