  1. Re:Backups are here to stay... on Backup Tapes: Alive And Kicking · · Score: 4, Insightful

They also forget to mention that you can't just disconnect a disk array, send it off site for 30 days, and expect to easily restore it when it comes back. With tapes, even if the OS it was originally backed up on is Windows, and the new OS was Linux, it will work (seemlessly if the backup software allows). The other thing that most people ignore besides the above mentioned sneaker quality is the larger cost associated with rack space, power, and cooling when using disk. I can stack a hell of a lot more TB/sq ft. with tapes than even some of the highest density hard drives, and I won't have to pay as much for power. Also disk systems produce considerably more heat than a tape library.

None of this really matters to small installations, but to enterprise installations these things are a lot more important.

  3. Why not use PHP as glue? on Transferring Data 'Tween Databases · · Score: 1

Why wouldn't you just add a parameter to your script that could do the inserts directly to the MySQL database right from PHP, instead of going to a file first? A simple type switch would be good. Then you could say if($type == "file") write data to file, else if($type == "db") write directly to the MySQL DB... It's a simple solution, and it could be easily configured for clients as a turnkey solution to getting their data.

Sometimes even the implimentation is up for grabs too. (Read as... IBM vs Borland over the Lotus meuning system being the same as the Quatrro Pro menuing system)

I'm even willing to bet that of those users who do interact with MS products, many are Sys Admins. Now you can flame me all you want, but I think the question is valid, and aimed at the Sys Admin crowd of slashdot, not the I hate MS/Linux Rules/All your Base Belong to Us crowd on slashdot. Shouldn't we help provide an answer, not stick our noses in the air? I find this hipocritical(sic). Afterall, when I posted previously about wanting tech support for products (opensource or otherwise), everyone screamed and flamed that I should rely on documentation and the "community" for help. Now someone needs help, and because he uses NT, you're too good to help him out. I think that sucks.

Neither does sourcecode. Someone needs to execute it. Just as somone needs to execute the action of lighting a match/stove/house on fire. Yes bad things can happen, but don't blame the cookbook/sourcecode if you're not careful. It's about time users take responsibility for some of their actions. e.g. Burn down the house while cooking, it's your fault. Send a million viruses because you didn't install anti-virus/used MS Outlook, it's still your fault.

Chances are you need to speak to someone pronto. Either by phone or in person, and that comes at a cost. A cost that is generally not figured in when pricing out Open Source Software for your business. Outfits like Sun or IBM will figure in large support contracts along with their software making the price of Open Source solutions look much more attractive. This is a double edged sword.
