They're comparing it to Microsoft's latest and greatest. Seems fair to me, even if it is like beating a one-legged man.

I think the main reason Facebook is (allegedly) harmful is because of some publisized cases where some idiot or his friends showed pictures of their drunken binges. As long as you (or your friends) aren't idiots, Facebook shouldn't be harmful.
Reading code tells me what a program does. It doesn't tell me why they did it that way, and sometimes knowing why is very helpful when I'm making changes.
I very much agree! I've wasted large amounts of time on several sites *cough*Slashdot*uncough* but when I have a lot of work (on workdays) or want to spend more time with my GF (on weekends), I have no problem walking away from Slashdot/Facebook/Twitter/etc until I run out of RL stuff to keep me busy.
My friends are older, mid to late 40s, maybe some over 50, but I'm still surprised, given all the "buzz" about FB, that I didn't find any of them there.
Interesting. I recently joined FB, mostly out of curiousity, and because a large number of people I "know" from another website are on it. I looked around for some old HS classmates. Nothing. College pals? Nope, just a couple of the guys that I DIDN'T hang with then. A couple of cow-orkers, but I see them everyday and didn't need to "friend" them. Right now, all my FB friends are the same people I was already talking to on the other site. The only difference is that we're using real names (presumably) instead of internet nicknames. None of my RL friends are on FB.
I agree that it's a good idea to use the nickname rather than "stable". The problem is, many Debian users haven't experienced this surprise before. I've only heard about these "releases" from my dad, and he's very old.
A better defense is just be careful about what you post. A potential employer could certainly find my real name on FB. They shouldn't be able to find much more because of my privacy settings, but even my FB friends wouldn't know *unspecified info* about me, because I've never posted it. And, of course a RL friend that knew of such secret info could screw me regardless. If I didn't kill them first.;)
Why would MS put a fish in their pants?
I assume you don't live in the inner city.

By your own criteria, I mod thee "Troll".
Also, if nobody else can do your job, it can be a PITA scheduling vacations.

One would think the bank wouldn't take the word of a goldfish. Though, given recent history...

Join multiple sites. So when Twitter goes down, you can gripe on Facebook about it, and when FB goes down, you can tweet away.

One problem is if the pedo's site is #2 and the real persons site is #541 on the listings. The employer might not even see the real site.
I agree that anyone who does this is an idiot. But, in this day and age, many people have no choice but to work for idiots.

Or at least as old as the last release, which itself is pretty old.

If those street cameras are under the control of the government, they'll be useless in your defense, due to "malfunctions".
no cameras:
governments capriciously abuse their citizens. no proof
cameras:
governments capriciously abuse their citizens. objective proof of such abuse exists until the government erases it
Yeah, big difference. Proof that only one party has access to isn't proof.
I don't know about the 70s, but I'm pretty sure I could open more than 3 apps in the 80s, with Desqview on my 8088.
Maybe they're surveying the people who got Vista on 512M craptops. They're lucky if they can open 2 apps at a time.
This is slashdot. Nuff said.
Which, IMO, is a good thing. If they had done that with XP as they should have, we wouldn't be griping about it in 2009.
WASP? I thought he was a mosquito billionaire!
Yes it does. If you don't like your version of Vista, you can still switch to Ubuntu (or SUSE or Mandriva, or Gentoo) for free.
