Well, this conservative is against programs that encourage people to stay on their butts, rather than get up and work. Multi-generational welfare is bad, government guaranteed student loans are good.
All your software is managed an upgraded using a single GUI interface, some distros can even do major version upgrade with a few mouse clicks - try upgrading from XP to Vista that way!
Last I heard, most distros CAN'T do seamless version upgrades, at least not very well. I saw a website with instrustions on upgrading from Fedora 7 to 8 that looked like something out of a wizard's spellbook. Mandrake was well-known for upgrade problems (admittedly my knowledge there is outdated; last time I used it it was called Mandrake), and even Ubuntu has a mixed track record for that.
My experiences with Linux have been a very mixed bag. My current install was about as easy as they get, but I've had many problems in the past, including with older versions of Ubuntu.
So far, I've never had a trouble-free installation with Linux on a brand-new, fresh from WorstBuy computer. Until that happens, I don't consider Linux ready for "Joe Sixpack".
As a practical matter, nobody is 100% honorable, and somebody who's in charge of building voting machines should not be politically active.
I have no problem with the Diebold CEO being poltically active - as long as his machines are auditable by people who are politically active for the other guy(s).
And, considering that these "intended users" include the dumbest people in all parts of the country (including Florida), the UI needs to be pretty damn obvious.
A POTUS certainly doesn't have to be an EXPERT on computers, economics, or military tactics. He DOES, however, need to be savvy enough to recognize such experts, and appoint them to advise him. Otherwise, we could end up with horse experts in charge of hurricane relief.
Oddly enough, it seems to me that NOT being in the military is an advantage in getting the job. Look at Dole vs Clinton, or Kerry vs Bush. The military man got his butt kicked in the election. McCain's military background isn't going to get him into office.
IMO, it's a combination. An average 30 y/o who started driving 6 months ago is STILL a better driver than the average 16 1/2 y/o, simplay because the teen is more reckless, and generally more of an idiot. That doesn't mean the novice 30 y/o is a GOOD driver; s/he will still make lots of dumb mistakes and get in a few accidents before learning how to avoid the other fools on the road.
There are other places on Earth with similar theocracies, but the west has done nothing about them. The real reason is that Afghanistan is in a strategic position concerning Russia and China.
That's probably a factor, but I'm sure that if someone blew up a high-profile American building and hid in Darfur, we'd be in there quickly enough.
The real question is: is it going to get that bad ? Was the great depression even "that bad" or are the stories of stock traders jumping out of windows greatly exaggerated ?
Personally, I'm in favor of stock traders jumping out of windows.:)
I don't know how bad this recession/depression will get, but I'm fairly sure there was very little work done on Open Source software during the Great Depression.
An real world example is EvE Online. Along side a mostly player driven universe, the devs have tried to run "storyline" events, and they hardly ever worked out. The players just didn't react as was hoped/expected (sometimes unwittingly, sometimes purposefully.) I remember one event where the devs tried to get a big bunch of casual players together to go fight a big scary ship that they'd never expect to be in combat with otherwise. But players of a large and powerful corporation accidently stumbled upon the target ship before the casual group could get there, and destroyed it first. When the casual group arrived and the ship was already dead, they turned against the dev characters' ships. And that's not even getting into the many cases where groups have purposely thwarted the devs' plans. Fortunately for EVE, these sorts of "story" events aren't a big part of the game, and not particularly important to its success.
ROTFLMAO!!
Sometimes the unexpected can be the best of all. I've been in a few RolePlays where nothing went like I expected, but we still had lots of fun with them.
The problem is, not everyone CAN be a hero. In any game (or RL for that matter), the heros are far outnumbered by the "grunts". And some of those grunts might work as hard as the heros, but never quite get into the limelight. Maybe they don't have the social skills or the gaming skills. Maybe they don't live in the mom's basement and game for 24/7. But for whatever reason they remain in the background.
That's always going to be the case in any game with large numbers of players.
Hope because the idiots that have been running the country for nearly a decade are gone, fear that the new bunch of idiots aren't any better.
Poor, naive youth! :-P
I could take toothpaste on an airplane.
But she has all that foriegn policy experience. She can see Russia from her front porch! Can Obama say that?
Damn! I was looking forward to Jerky Jackass!
So are the Dems. As far as principles go, the only difference between them is that people have forgotten how full of crap the Dems are.
Nah, the election still looks pretty tight to me.

I wouldn't be surprised if someone isn't goofy enough to try it.

Oddly enough, I have that problem in RL too. Except I don't think they deleted themselves.
I'd reverse the order on the above.
Wow, and I thought I was old!
I haven't used the latest Norton products, but the last time I used it, it was a total POS. If they have improved, it's too little too late.
That's probably a factor, but I'm sure that if someone blew up a high-profile American building and hid in Darfur, we'd be in there quickly enough.
I'm not black, and I'm not ancient, and if you want to include VPs, I'm not female. None of them look like me, so they all suck!
Personally, I'm in favor of stock traders jumping out of windows. :)
