My impression of Java, practicing with it at home, is that it sux, mostly because of its bloated API. Perl & Python are much more fun to play with. OTOH, Perl would be a total disaster at work. All the elections showed is that the American people preferred one jackass over another. I don't know anyone who really liked either candidate.

Also, the reason there is no major opposition is that most people are just living their lives like they always have. For all the talk about the Patriot Act, few people have seen any problems with it. Bush is diverting vast amounts of money into Iraq and the "war" on terror, but most people didn't see that money before Bush spent it. For the average American, Bush isn't much worse than his predeccesors, unless they have family in the military. They have no reason to support him, but there's not much reason to oppose him either.

Agreed! There's one road that's in the middle of road construction and the posted speed of 45 mph isn't safe during midday traffic. There's another road, with a posted limit of 55, but I could easily do 70 on it.

The fact is, the crime IS getting worse. I don't cower under the bed because of it, but it does bother me. Part of the problem is that I do live in a fairly high crime area, though not the worst area. Probably about 90 of the killings are in a certain area, and most of the rest are within a mile of my house. And some of those are random, though probably not as many as it sounds since those get more press than the much more common drug/gang shootings. I suppose if it got to the point where I do feel unsafe I could move to a "good" area, but the houses there probably cost 2-3X what I could sell mine for, and anything I could afford probably wouldn't be as good as my present house.
