My impression of Java, practicing with it at home, is that it sux, mostly because of its bloated API. Perl & Python are much more fun to play with. OTOH, Perl would be a total disaster at work. I have no problem understanding my Perl code, but if I had to work on someone else Perl, I'd surely rip out what remains of my hair.
Didn't Rome outsource its military to the barbarians? Where are we getting parts for our military these days? If they're "Made in China" like our civilian crap is, we could be in very deep dog fertilizer!
Government control is no guarantee of long-term success. Soviet dictators turned Russia into a great power, but look at it now. China's iron hand can squash just as easy as it pushes. Frankly, I don't think China can maintain its current groth as a totalitarian country.
The other reason we were #1 is because we were innovators. We weren't afraid to take risks. Unfortunately, we're becoming a nation of lawyers and bean-counters, so naturally we're falling behind.
Last I heard, the Chinese navy sucked. It's a little hard to kick ass while you're swimming. But, it's true that they don't have to worry about anyone conquering them.
All the elections showed is that the American people preferred one jackass over another. I don't know anyone who really liked either candidate.
Also, the reason there is no major opposition is that most people are just living their lives like they always have. For all the talk about the Patriot Act, few people have seen any problems with it. Bush is diverting vast amounts of money into Iraq and the "war" on terror, but most people didn't see that money before Bush spent it. For the average American, Bush isn't much worse than his predeccesors, unless they have family in the military. They have no reason to support him, but there's not much reason to oppose him either.
The problem is, Microsoft wants an "All-in-one" Microsoft only world. Shouldn't an OEM be able to include Netscape without M$ jacking up the Windows price on them? That kind of crap from M$ is WHY governments are cracking down on bundling.
It's a perfect example. Years ago, I was looking for a car. My cow-orker raved about how fantastic her Toyota was, so I looked for one. I took one look at the price, and bought a Ford. And while the Ford never had a BSOD, I never thought of it as anything beyond "good enough". I still hear people rave about their Toyotas.
I'm sad about how many people bought into it, especially in the mass hysteria that followed in 2001
It's also ironic that many of the people who shrieked about government oppression under Clinton are now following Bush like lemmings. Wake up, people! It's not a Dem vs Rep thing! Either party will gladly led us off the edge of the cliff if we let them!
Cell phones can't cause cancer - it's not the right type of radiation. Microwave electromagnetic radiation can cause damage in one way (heating), and that requires far higher power levels than any cell phone to have any effect whatsoever on a human body.
I don't know about cancer, but I've seen evidence that cellphones fry your brain, based on the extreme stupidity of the users.
Admittedly, I never saw them before they got their phones.
You are exactly right and I have observed this effect in both directions. A two lane highway that I take every day has a posted limit of 55mph, but it is rare that traffic moves faster than 45. Traffic is fairly light on that road, but the road is not in very good condition and just doesn't feel safe at the posted limit
Agreed! There's one road that's in the middle of road construction and the posted speed of 45 mph isn't safe during midday traffic. There's another road, with a posted limit of 55, but I could easily do 70 on it.
IME, the fast drivers are the unpredictable ones. Everytime I see some moron weaving in and out of traffic without using their blinkers, they're also speeding. Whenever some idiot tailgates me so close that he killed a fly on my back bumper, he's speeding (or at least trying to). Admittedly, that old geezer doing 40 MPH on the highway is unsafe too, but for every old geezer, I see 10 wanna-be race car drivers.
I have no problem with the CONCEPT of ads. However, their execution has usually stunk. A typical TV show has crooked car dealers yelling at you, Viagra ads that look like my inbox, ads that are supposed to be funny but make me barf, and ads so vague that I'm not even sure what the product is. Those ads "pop up" whenever the show has hit an interesting part, and they last 5+ minutes at a time. Then they wonder why everyone wants to skip past them! Hopefully this will be an improvement, but given the total stupidity of the marketeers, I wouldn't bet on it.
I recently dumped Norton and installed Avast. Norton borked a few things, and I knew it was slowing things down, but I didn't realize how much until I switched.
The fact is, the crime IS getting worse. I don't cower under the bed because of it, but it does bother me. Part of the problem is that I do live in a fairly high crime area, though not the worst area. Probably about 90 of the killings are in a certain area, and most of the rest are within a mile of my house. And some of those are random, though probably not as many as it sounds since those get more press than the much more common drug/gang shootings. I suppose if it got to the point where I do feel unsafe I could move to a "good" area, but the houses there probably cost 2-3X what I could sell mine for, and anything I could afford probably wouldn't be as good as my present house.

Even there, they lag behind. The Japanese were flying planes into ships in WW2.
Translation: "I'm sorry I got caught".
That professor clearly had no business teaching that class, and I'm glad he had to resign, but, no, he certainly did not deserve a beating.
I don't think the whackjobs were doing anyone's bidding. They were not representative of Christianity. They were just hot-headed, stupid thugs.
Please post your banking information here. lol, this am not a phishing atempt!

I use KDE, you insensitive clod!
Risky! If a single can of beans is found on your property, the US will invade because you have WMDs.

I weep for them - NOT! Symantic was good way back when I ran it on MS-DOS 5.0. It has sucked for years.

Yeah, but this isn't just any anti-virus. It's GAnti-Virus (tm)!
Here's a better analogy:
Doctor: "OMG! He's got a temperature of 99! I've been monitoring him for a week and his temp has NEVER been that high before!"
