WRT MS-DOS, I often heard it said that DOS was only a program loader & file manager, not a "real" OS.
On a "real" OS (Windows/Linux/Mac), I use the file system to organize my stuff. iOS, and last I heard Android, doesn't allow that. What the FS is under the hood is irrelevant.
My tablet is certainly more portable than my laptop, but not more versatile. Maybe in some situations the portability is more important to me. But in many cases, I'll wait until I get back to my laptop/desktop so I can take advantage of its superior versatility.
I agree with the above poster. I don't know his criteria, but I consider Android & iOS "toys" because of their limits for real content creations. Great for viewing cat videos, not great for spreadsheet/word processing/programming work.
And yes, it's the software. It would, IMO, be a toy under Android, and a non-toy under Windows.
It's changing. Windows is a household name, yes, but it becomes more and more something that people despise for two reasons. First, for a real one, because they get to hear time and again "bad news" about it. Privacy? Shady business tactics? Nah. Malware. Crypto trojans. And it does only happen to Windows users.
Heh! My mom knows squat about computers and doesn't even have one. But she heard, on TV & the radio, about this "crying" virus on Microsoft (she didn't remember "Windows", but she remembered the company).
I remember awhile back, I was asking about my vacation plans, and the boss said he was flexible about when I took it, as long as all three of the people on the same project didn't take off at the same time.
On another occasion, my boss had me write detailed instructions on one of my projects before my vacation so one of my cow-orkers could take over during my absence.
Agreed. I don't gave a flying f*** what "channel" my show is on. I just want to know when, which with Netflix means whenever I'm ready to watch it. Even before DVRs, I didn't have time to watch TV on their schedule. I recorded with ye olde VCR, clunky as it was compared to the DVR. And of course Netflix is even better, since there aren't any commercials to FF past.
An hour time slot is filled with 40 minutes of actual content, the remainder being commercials. There's no better painful reminder of this than Netflix. Go back and find a show from the 80s, or the 90s and note the playtime, and compare it to today.
What bugs me is, when I watch one of those old shows on MeTV, I find significant parts are cut out to make room for the commercials.
I'm rather surprised that the Cable / ISPs managed to beat the airline industry here. Must be either short-term memory, or maybe a lot of people don't fly often.
At least the Cable / ISPs don't physically drag you away from your TV or computer screen. Nor are you at all liekly to need pat-down searches for TV or internet.
No, but if I couldn't FF, the commercials would drive me away from the TV, yelling "Enough! No more!" at the top of my lungs.
The ONLY exception I can think of right now for this would be safety related. If the government needs to warn of an evacuation and can't get you by phone they should be able to leave a voicemail. I was in Boulder when a fire was heading towards the city and got an automatic call to prepare for evacuation, along with a text message, emergency alert, and other things. In that kind of situation leaving a voice mail is also okay.
If I can't be reached by phone, I probably won't see text or voicemail either. Maybe Emergency Alert, only because that will make a loud noise even if my phone is silenced. But even that would become useless if they tried to use it for non-emergencies.
There's no guaranteed way to get an immediate response from me. If my GF texts me, I might not hear/feel the notification and it could be hours before I check the phone. If she phones, I might have the phone on silent because I'm in a meeting, and it could be hours before I check the phone. It really depends on what I'm doing at the time.
There's a point to be made here. The dark ages bit is hyperbole, the vast majority of what goes into you being healthy is prevention, sanitation, gloves, and not throwing your feces into the street.
Agreed! Having feces-free streets helps all of us, even those who don't need antibiotics. I think it's called turd-immunity.
When I presented my finger, I was attacked by the TSA. Maybe I used the wrong one.
Yeah, that's the problem of doing things with a pen and a phone. They can easily be undone by the next guy with a tweet and a cavfefe.
I see two scenarios. Trump f**ks things up, and they nominate Clinton because they think anyone could win (that worked so well with Kerry).
Or Trump doesn't f**k things up too much, they nominate Clinton in 2020 to save their good people for 2024.
#2 might actually be a decent strategy.

> What the hell is a "porpoise"?
A better question is: what is a 'covfefe'?
I don't think it is something you grab someone by.
Isn't it a drink to keep you from falling asleep while tweeting?
I also remember TV series doing 26 episodes a season... and an hour TV show lasting 50 minutes, now down to 44 minutes. A lot commercial skipping eh?
Damn, you're old! So am I. :)
So, what will the ex-pizza deliverers do? I don't think many of them can be retrained as rocket surgeons.
If it had productive software, multi-windowing, and a usable hierarchical file system, then I'd say Android would graduate from "toy" to real OS.

Or at least not any worse than the competitor's crap hardware.

Hands? That is so 18th century!

The good news is, there's a site with no trolls. The bad news is, it doesn't have any users either.

Obvious problem with that. Does the scanner work if you have a black eye?
Programming jobs may not be fun.
That should work fine. Twice.

I can't tell what OS mine runs. I just see a blue screen.
