    Tivo is the PVR for DirecTV systems. Dish has their own non-Tivo PVR.

    Debian Woody won't even install on modern machines. Backports don't mean squat if you can't intall it in the first place! And, until recently, testing didn't have security updates.

    Yup! I found and fixed lots of date problems in 1998-1999. Some would have just printed 1900 on a report, but others would have been serious.

    Eventually, they would use the non-working lights as stop signs, but not before several people got injured or killed in crashes. That happens in regular malfunctions; it would be worse if every light in the city borked.

    I agree! If all the problems I fixed in late 1998 through 1999 had hit in 2000, it would have been nasty.

    It's also possible for a burglar to get into my house, but I still lock the doors & set the alarm.

    You can lose your data in a versioning system, but not as easily as you can in a non-versioning one.

    The reason it matters is, the more people use ABW (anything but Windoze), the harder it will be for Microsoft to lock us out of the market. If MS has 99%+ of the market, it can pressure hardware venders to make their stuff work only on Doze, and the other 1% can fcsk themselves. That would be a lot harder if other OS's have 10-20% of the market. Personally, I don't care if they use BSD, Slackware, SuSe, or even Linspire, as long as it increases the number of people using non-Windows OS's.

    Whenever I try to boycott a movie, they show an AD, that tells me I MUST see that movie. So, I have to go against my will to the theatre. Then, when the DVD comes out, they show another AD that says I MUST buy it, so I do, even though I already know the movie was crap!

    Last time I looked, there was no law saying I had to buy their crap. And no matter how much money they throw at the politicians, such a law would never even be considered, since such a person would quickly be voted out of office.

    Some people consider the Cold War to be WW3 (won through economics instead of guns). The War on Terror is WW4 (with Iraq either being a turning point in our favor, or the dumbest thing Bush could have done).

    Also, I wouldn't chear for an American collapse if I were you. What do you think will happen to the rest of the world if we suddenly are too poor to buy YOUR goods?
