But those were probably the only 2 quakes in Missouri's known history. When we DO get a quake, it's a lulu, but we might go centuries between quakes. Unlike CA, which shakes at the drop of a hat. Any hat!
Most people don't have wood burners! And considering how many people set their houses on fire with space-heaters, wood-burners aren't that good an idea anyway. And most furnices need gas AND electricity. No electric, no heat!
But, then you look up, see Dorthy's house falling towards you, and you can't get the chains off in time!

Last year, we had a major ice storm in the Midwest. A huge number of people lost their electricity. Some of them died from the cold, others died from their space-heaters catching their house on fire. Blizzards are far from safe.
The best way to make sure that certain illegal monopolists can't kill Linux is to make Linux more popular. It would be much harder to lobby for Linux-unfriendly laws if 20% of people used Linux.
They don't have to tell you. Usually, they won't. They'd rather hide their cards. Submarine patents, ones that you didn't expect and then surface later, are legal. Lots of people view
them as a money-making strategy.
I'm sure they ARE a money-making strategy. Carrying a loaded gun into a bank could be a money-making strategy too.
The whole idea is that the insurance companies pay for insuring the guy with the bum knee with all the money they rake in from the millions of people with good knees who pay $,$$$ over the years!
That didn't work for me. As soon as I told him that I was incompetent, he was even more eager to do business with me. "Your nurse doesn't need to know"
I agree that running as root is a security risk. But I'm in favor of "Linux for Joe Sixpack". And if Joe doesn't want to mess with passwords, he shouldn't have to. As long as people who want to CAN set up user accounts.
I agree! If I were in charge of a distro, I'd pick ONE desktop, probably KDE since it's my preference, and install it by default. Gnome, Xfce, and maybe 20 other desktops would still be there for "advanced" users. I'd also give advanced users the option of installing whatever they want INSTEAD of KDE, but newbies would get KDE without having to wonder what to do next.
I agree! We also need to make sure the Shittes don't oppress the Sunnis & Kurds just because they're a majority! Iraq doesn't need more oppression from religious kooks - or RIAA kooks!

You'd be surprised at how many people qualify.

What if you're walking around in the fog, and fall in a hole and break your neck?
Ah, but with Tivo, I can go jogging/walking when I get home from work AND watch all of Buffy after I finish. I don't have go get back home at 7 sharp.
Bummer! It's been down all week!
Yeah, I miss MS-DOS on my old 8088!
I can name at least two companies/organizations that meet their release dates. Debian & Slackware. They both release "when it's ready".

There's plenty on! Yes, 95% of the shows on TV are total crap, but the other 5% is more than enough to fill a 60 hour Tivo.

I agree! I got off of someone's "friend" list awhile back and I can only guess why.
And yet, it makes the insurance companies richer than God.

How does Lindows compare to Lycoris? They're both aiming at the "Joe Winpack" market.
I agree! Programming may change, but we still need computer programmers.
One of the programmers where I work has a philosophy degree, and one of my cow-orkers referred to him as a "sharp programmer in spite of his degree".

The big difference is that if RedHat goes too far, it's not that hard to switch to Mandrake or SuSe. There ARE no alternatives to Microsoft.
Gentoo must really suck then. Isn't it only on 1.4?
