    Someone at my job got bit by something similar. Someone else was testing his stuff and a message came up "If you got here, something is seriously fscked up". Management was not amused, especially since the exact word wasn't "fsck"!

    If 19" is "just right" for your living room, maybe you ought to consider getting a job, and moving out of your parents' basement.

    I have a good job, thank you, and a good house. I don't have a living room that's built like a football field, but I don't spend thousands per month on house payments either!

    $1,500! Nope! I bought a perfectly good TV for $150!! Yes, it's a 19" set, but it's just the right size for my living room. I don't even WANT a 64" giant.

    That's for sure! I've had to call 911 on several occasions, and it takes from 15 to 60 minutes for the police to show. The bad guy can do a lot of damage in 15+ minutes.

    The problem here, of course, is that it is contrary to the GPL licensing terms for them to do this. They must make the source of Mandrake available to anyone who wants it for no more than their distribution costs.

    Not quite. They just have to make the source available to anybody they give/sell the binaries to. They could charge $99.99 for each DL (binary & source) and still comply with the GPL.

    True! IMO, we really need a community distro that's geared for newbies. Unfortunately, the current non-corporate distros (Slackware, Debian, Gentoo) are for techies, not for Aunt Tillie.

    Think of it this way. Every American eats food, we know this because they aren't starving in the streets. They must be doing something valuable enough for them to earn the food they eat. Couldn't we simple redirect the flow of that money instead of into consumer hands to buy food, directly into the hands of the
    farmers who grow it so they can continue to grow it and pay their bills, while we make it all free in the grocery store. Remember we're going to eat one way or another, but if we don't have to manage money when we go buy our food it save us a little time. Add up all the time it would save you and your friends and family and all the people you know and you begin to see how much time we waste managing money.


    But then what happens to the grocers? And when the grocery stores die, think of all the time we'll spend driving out to the boonies to buy from Farmer Brown.

    One problem with a niche programming language is finding good documentation for it. Is there a good resource that tell you everthing you want to know about the language? Preferably online & free (beer), since there's almost zero chance of ever using it on a job.

    That would fit! It's the only story that comes to my mind where one of Asimov's robots killed a human (though my memories are hazy too). But I suspect they'll do their own plot, which may be great, or may totally suck.

    The lunatic fringe is not unique to Tivo OR Linux. I've seen as bad from users of OS/2, the Mac, and the BEOS. I've even heard people rave about DOS!! Just my $.02.

    You don't need to add to your monthly bills. You can get a "Lifetime" subscription for a one-shot cost of $249.99. Ok, that's a lump of money, but it's different from a never-ending monthly charge.

    It's been a long time since I read it, but I think in "Runaround" the robot had a malfunction that caused it to stagger around, spouting Gilbert & Sullivan. Maybe Will can play that one.

    I still think FILE CORRUPTION bugs should make the front page! Yes, it's in a raw kernel, but the very people dumb enough to use yesterday's kernel are the ones most likely to read /. And while I don't have much sympathy for anyone who uses a new kernel for PRODUCTION, it should be well publisized for the benefit of home users who are fool enough to use it.

    Same here! When I first got Tivo, it would record stuff automatically, some good, some crappy, but my HD is full of stuff I requested.

    I even remember a DOS tool that implemented long file names! One of the good things about DOS's many shortcomings, is the variety of tools to eliminate them.

    Actually, DOS supported subdirectories in 1986 too. I think it was at 3.0 at that time, and IIRC, subdirectoies were introduced in 2.0.
