I'll call you out on that. For the majority of Windows users (which is what you are talking about), you need KDE3 to get equivelant friendliness. And KDE3 needs as much resources as an XP system. Don't tell me it doesn't, go and try it. KDE3 is unrunnable on a 48MB machine, and you'd have to be a masochist to want to use it with 64MB. 96 is the practical minimum, 128 is about right. Use anything less than KDE3 and you're sacrificing user friendliness, which (for most users) is a step backwards. In fact, for ease of use, I'd rate KDE3 alongside Win98SE. Win98SE runs fine in 32MB. So does fvwm95, but I'd (sorry) pick Win98SE over that for a general purpose system for

The big difference is that you CAN choose to run fvwm95. You can't choose to run Win98 unless it came with your old clunker.

    1) Linux doesn't get viruses BECAUSE no one is writing viruses for linux. I know it's a tautology, but were Linux to take off, I think we'd see an interest from the script-kiddie
development centers of the world. Linux doesn't have the critical mass to support a
worldwide virus. No Outlook - no virus.

If Linux became popular we might see some viruses at first. They'd probably target user data because without root access they couldn't hurt the system. They'd likely be RH specific since it's the most popular. Soon afterwards, those holes would be closed. Users would web-surf under a dummy user with no access to their real data. Non-RH users would snicker at RH, but even RH wouldn't be vulnerable long.

    2) The worst element of the Web is interested in reaching the largest group possible. A lot of the rules simply don't apply to Linux users as long as they stay in the 1%. It's the same reason I secretly hope Mozilla never gets into popular use. As long as it stays a 1% browser, I can block images from ad servers and most of the web is ad-free for me. If everyone had Mozilla, more site would host ads locally or use Flash instead of images, and I'd be out of luck.

The bad thing about being 1% is when your online bank decides to become IE-only. Its far easier to convince them otherwise if you have hundreds of other PO'd customers griping, than it is if you're the only one.
