Everyone keeps glorifying the fact that it will be used on all AOL users soon. But, I don't understand this. I haven't really used AOL for a long time, maybe it's changed... but, before you couldn't tell what browser you were using. It's just built into the system, right? How will they even know if they're using IE, Opera, Netscape or Mozilla? Does it matter to them?
Where it will matter is when all those AOL users say "Company XYZ's website really sux! It looks like crap! How can I buy anything from such a crappy site!". It won't take long before XYZ makes sure that its site works right with AOL's browser, whatever it is.
Trivial if you're a hardcore LFS geek perhaps. But how many hardcore types will give a flying fig about UL? Many people will just say "**** this! I'll just use RH/MDK"
Actually, techs (and everyone else) is anti-management, because they realize that by and large, they understand management but management does not understand them. Most any responsible worker could be an effective manager. But most managers could not (or would not) do any other job. Your manager may be different. But they're an exception. Congratulations. Management is a game of politics and connections and favoritism.
I think I understand management. I understand enough to know that I would suck as a manager. I could certainly manage a technical team well enough, but that's different. You said it yourself: management is a game of politics, and while I have the typical tech disdain for BS, the sad fact is that BS is neccesary in the business world. My boss couldn't do my job, but I really couldn't do his either.
Scary thought: maybe they're studying us to determine if we ARE ready to join Galactic Civilization. If we do develop FTL (faster than light) drive but are still warring among ourselves, they may decide we're too dangerous and wipe us out before we can hurt them.
To me it just means Solo was slower & luckier than in the original. If I know for an absolute certainty that someone is about to kill me, I'd be a total idiot to wait for him to shoot first! What if Greedo didn't miss?
Ah, but he DID release the original version! It's not an unsupported beta, it's version 1.0! And version 2.0 sux! Special note: I also liked EP1 for the most part (Jar-Jar still sux). EP2 was ok (Jar-Jar still sux, but Palpatine luvs him).
The Special Edition mostly sucked. OK, some of the new stuff in New Hope was ok, but the touches to Empire didn't flow well, and I hate the new song that Jabba's band was singing in the new Jedi! I just hope my original VHS tapes never go pfft, even if the special effects were old.
Gentoo sounds kewl, but I have two concerns. First, how stable is it? I'd heard it was bleeding edge. Second, I wonder about ease/speed of install; I can install Slack in 15 minutes off the CD. I gather most of the Gentoo install is over the net even if I bought a CD from cheapbytes, and the instructions look a bit daunting compared to a Slack install.
Slackware works better for me than any other distro I've tried. I've had oddball problems with both RH and Mandrake, and I just don't like the "look and feel" of Suse. Sometimes Debian works great, but not always; I've gotten bit in the butt by apt-get. I only broke Slackware once, and it was only X and I could fix it from the command line. There's a learning curve, and I may have to tinker, but once I get something working, it WORKS!
As a side note, the original judge in the MS anti-trust case has said he feels Microsoft would not be where they are today (a monopoly found guilty of anti-trust) had Bill Gates finished college. He apparently never took an ethics course required by Harvard.
Wouldn't have helped. You can lead a horse to water etc.
I'm sure I will see it, but I'm not sure when. I'm not even considering seeing it opening day, and quite probably not opening week. I'd rather wait for the crowds to die.
Actually, I thought that was the best part of the whole movie! When he asked that question, I burst out laughing!
Reach makes a difference, but in this case, while Dooku was bending down to attack Yoda, Yoda could be chopping his ankles.
COBOL is a great language for business/financial applications. I wouldn't write an OS in it, but I wouldn't recommend C for banking software either.
Slackware-current now has Mozilla 1.0!

You'd be more uneasy getting a kernel with file corruption problems (2.4.15-greased-turkey). I'd rather wait for a quality product.
Sorry, but 2.4.19 isn't out yet. 2.4.18 is the latest stable kernel.

I'm not sure about RH & Mandrake, but I can't imagine Slackware ever doing this kind of crap.

Shouldn't EP3 be TB-Edited?
You couldn't have picked a better sig for this topic if you'd planned it.

I'm sure Palpatine loves him!

Is CBB still being maintained? I'm subscribed to their mailing list and it's been dead for months.
Who was the mother?

My favorite came from Empire. "They told me they fixed it! I trusted them to fix it! It's not my fault!!"
