I never had a "free" account, but I remember when we had good interest rates. My first CD, in the mid to late 80s, paid 8%, and IIRC, my regular savings was 2-3%. Even my checking gave me 1%. Nowdays, most long-term CDs aren't even 1%.:(
Consider that another human is your audience. Choose identifiers such that a comment is unnecessary. Comments should not say what is obvious. (This assigns foo to x.) Comments should say what is not obvious and cannot be made obvious by the code itself.
That's one of my peeves. When I see a comment like that, I scream (usually silently) that I know you're assigning foo to x. I want to know WHY you're assigning foo to x!
The big problem with Vista is, it hit the "sour spot" for memory. If you had less than 2GB, it was slow. If you had more than 2GB Vista 32 couldn't see the extra, and it was slow.
I agree that the extreme of no government is bad. That doesn't mean I want to live in China, North Korea, or the old Soviet Union. Too much government is no picnic either.
The question in my mind is, just quickly will the self-driving car detect certain problems. I might see a dumb-looking human on the curb and think s/he looks just dumb enough to step into the street and change lanes before s/he does so. Can the car anticipate to that extent? Or, once I saw kids playing on the sidewalk. I slowed down BEFORE a ball shot out into the street, followed by an inattentive kid. The SD car might react faster after it detects the danger, but I might see the danger coming before the car, unless it also scans the sidewalk and not just the street.
How much warning would it give me? If I were engrossed in an interesting ebook and my self-driving car suddenly honked at me, it would take a few seconds to get oriented. Those few seconds could be disastrous. In my current car I know I need to be alert at all times, so I'd see whatever my car was warning me about much quicker than I would while reading/daydreaming/masturbating.
I read one book that had a two-tier society, Citizens (the uber-rich upper-class) and Serfs (everyone else). Though the robots, like most in SF, followed Asimov's laws, they didn't regard Serfs as "people", and could kill them.
Yup! When I self-googled, I got a whole page of MyRealName, none of which was me. The first real "me" I found was some dumb question I asked on a mailing list 15 years ago, and I have plausible deniability for that one.
Probably the only option in a serious amnesia situation is a trusted friend, with instructions to come to you if needed, since you might not even remember the friend.
Heh! Once my mom was looking at houses and reading addresses. Then we went to her ATM. Oops, she forgot her PIN. Too many other numbers floating around. Luckily, she had it somewhere at home.
"Change your password every 6 months" comes from the same (broken) school of thought that brought us "At least one capital letter, one number, and one special character in a password of at least length 8 but no greater than length 8; the password cannot contain any spaces, unprintable characters, nor mention any politician by name nor frank references to bodily functions."
They missed that last one on one of the systems I used to work on. Which was good, since after all the passwords it rejected, that was the only thing left to try.
Yup! The next-to-last time I used Symantec, I concluded that it wasn't worth paying for. The last time I used it (free trial) I decided that "free" was too costly. Since then, I actively avoid that crapware.
I'm over 50 and I live in Missouri. Yesterday WAS the coldest I'd seen in a long time, with temps starting at -10 and barely reaching 0 at the high. But still not as bad as that day in the 80's when I froze my *censored* off waiting for the bus at -20. The "high" that day was -8! And the snow on the ground was probably 12" compared to yesterday's 5".
Last time I went to the movies, the ads started 30 minutes before the actual movie. The ads were, literally 25% as long as the movie I wanted to watch! I agree that it's better than interrupting the show every 5 minutes for another bunch of ads, but it's still bad!
I keep hearing that tablets are good for "Joe Sixpack" because he just consumes content. That's not quite true. Posting on a forum, explaining why the previous poster is an idiot is creating content, and even that can be a PITA on a tablet/phone. I don't see tablets replacing laptops anytime soon.
Not a good example, since the casino coincidentally gained a $100 bill. :)
It is possible to really lose money (a $100 bill blows out of your hands into a bonfire), but even then the Fed is constantly printing more.

But, what will I use to buy my bitcoins?

I always knew WDC was full of gas.
It's not practical to take a plane trip from the US to the Netherlands just to get rid of my old light bulbs.

Well, if any of the candidates decide to accept campaign donations in bitcoin, you'll get your wish.

No, you're really not.

Hopefully the GW alarmists will remember that when we get a freak 115 F temp in the summer.

Think about it. Visit a zoo and watch the monkeys & apes throw poop. Then watch Congress in action. I see no sign of evolution.
These are the same people that likely believe the Earth is 6,000 years old
Well, looking at it that way, mankind HAS been in its current form since "the beginning of time".

Sure it is! Don't you see the look in their eyes as they worship the 72" TV?
Nickname? I didn't know that that was a nickname.
