    Everybody pretty much ignores their problems, like not being able to call phone support lines within reasonable times of day.

    How is that different from the USA?

    When we spring forward, I lose an hour of sleep. We should lose that hour in the middle of the workweek instead. I'd still lose an hour of sleep, but it would be in the middle of a boring meeting.

  5. Well, better medical senses in the light that it's usually magnitudes cheaper and just about as good in most cases. However, there is still a huge reason why the US is the pinnacle of the medical world. Thousands that can afford it flock to it to receive treatment.

    If I had any artistic talent, I'd draw a cartoon of rich Canadians coming here for care, while poor Americans swarm to Canada for care.

    and you don't have any medical emergencies. Or any kind of emergency whatsoever. And you don't have kids in college. Or you're OK with not giving them much support. Or you've won the genetic lottery and they got a full ride on a sports or academic scholarship. Or your job doesn't get shipped overseas when you're over 40. Or...

    I could keep going on, but the fact is with wages being in decline for 40 years it's bloody _hard_ to stay out of debt.

    It's not that hard if you save when you can and build up a nest egg for emergencies. Admittedly, I had a good paying, stable job most of my life. Of course, medical crap can wipe out anyone, and as one gets older, that becomes more likely.

    That is scary! My GF recently found she has cancer, and she and her brother co-own their house. Does that mean they can go after the house if she passes?

  9. I've never been in an Uber, but most public toilets I've seen are cleaner than many busses. Before they're cleaned! If the Ubers look anything like the busses, the OP has a legitimate concern.

    When my knee went out at work, they took me to the hospital in an ambulance. No medical treatment, in fact my knee popped back into place as they were loading me into the ambulance. $500! And this was over 20 years ago. I hate to think what it would be now.

  12. Heh! You hear about people asking "Paper or plastic?". Well, at my grocery store, they don't ask. Unless you quickly yell "Paper, damnit!", they'll start putting your crap in 15 tiny plastic bags. Much as I dislike bans, in the case of plastic bags, maybe the liberals have a point.

    Laws 2 and 3 are the wrong way round though. Machines are typically designed not to break on command. You tend to have safety cutouts and the like to protect the device.

    That would make it hard to order a robot to perform a task that might be dangerous to it. In fact, one of his robot malfunctions was because Rule 3 was stronger than normal, while Rule 2 was weaker.

    Last week, we had a dyslexic forecast. They predicted flurries on Sunday, 3+ inches Tuesday. We got our 3 inches Sunday, and a few stray flakes Tuesday.

    The voters thought Trump was better than the establishment politicians. How much of that is on the voters, and how much of that is on the establishment?

  17. For one year in 9th grade, I lived in Louisiana, near the eastern edge of CST, and it was really weird to see the sun come up half an hour earlier. It also would have set half an hour earlier, but I was too freaked by how early the sun came up to notice. There is a reason we have time zones, it's so that we don't have thousands of local times for thousands of cities.

    Yup, I noticed a significant difference in sunset when I visited my aunt in eastern Iowa (I live in western Missouri).

  20. I've had 3 experiences with GPS. On 2 occasions, I was trying to find a place I was semi-familiar with, didn't like the route it said, and the route I took turned out to be shorter. The 3rd time was with a friend trying to find somewhere he hadn't been in years. The GPS glitched several times, sending him down several wrong streets before he finally followed his gut and found the place.

    Humans 3, GPS 0!

  21. One of my mom's friends was a tiny woman, maybe 80-90 pounds tops. Her grandson was about my size (not small), and half my age, but he had trouble lifting her. She was pretty much dead weight, and lifting her was harder than one would think just looking at her.

    Sometimes I've gotten a phone call, and that bar that says "Slide to unlock" doesn't work. I can still answer calls on my iPad or iWatch, but it's definitely a glitch.

    I made the tongue-in-cheek comment that Vista hit the "sour spot" in RAM. If you had less than 2GB, it was slow. If you had more than 2GB, 32-bit Vista only saw the 2 GB, and it was slow.

    Most software was poorly written back then. Pre-NT Windows was single user, and XP was compatible with it. Most software ASSumed the user was Admin.
