Awhile ago, I wrote some software that helped me on one of my projects. Nobody asked me to write it, but I had free time and a decent idea. I got jack squat for it, but I got some kudos from my boss and the senior programmer. And it did make my job easier, and helped the person who took the project over after I got transferred. Last but not least, it fed my ego. Pay or not, I have no regrets about writing that, except that the project, and therefore my software, got replaced when we modernized.
You could not even write an email to get support how to configure, e.g. speex. Hey, this name contains 'pee'. This is disgusting. So what to do? Complain to management as some poster here propose? Sorry to burst that bubble, this was not done by IT it was done to IT, by an incompetent management. IT was just good enough to suffer the consequences.
At my workplace, there used to be a guy with the last name "Peek". Good thing we didn't have that email policy!
Was the OS9 UI worse? I never used OS9, but I'd heard that it had a great UI. But underneath that UI, it sucked worse than Win95, really more comparable to Win3X.
I'm still using XP at work. I've heard rumblings that we'll eventually upgrade to 7. Considering the past track record, we MIGHT go from 7 to 9. W8 isn't even a remote possibility.
My mom HAS a 20 year old TV, and I've never had to do "tech support" for her on the TV itself. But it's a PITA dealing with connecting the satellite box and/or DVD to a set that old. The owners manual on them gives ME a headache.
When I get home from work, I just want to relax in front of the TV. In ancient times, they actually had decent content during that time. Nowdays, all the networks have some reality crap, or maybe a doctor/lawyer/cop show that is boring as watching paint dry. I'm not scheduling my life around TV, but I just happen to have time & inclination to watch TV at a certain time. If they had anything worth watching.
who misses the old 8 character filename limits?
I mean seriously, how am I going to use it?
Running old programs maybe?
POS apps. Embedded apps. Yes all legacy stuff, but even in a VM, emulating UDMA and a DVD drive is useful.
But don't most Piece Of Shit apps run under Windows?
or alternatively, send viruses that way to break into it
I thought they tried that.
I actually DO have a 9 year old car and a 15+ y/o TV. But even I don't voluntarily use IE6!
I could have told them that solar power works better in Kenya or Arizona than it does in Sweden, London, or Oregon.
Which does not reassure me on nuclear safety!
Photoshop any hand pictures to remove the offensive finger. Who care if they have 4 fingers on each hand? Or, technically, 3 fingers and a thumb.
I believe it's a slip of paper with a name & amount, sent to stupid businesses that try to charge for online payments.
I can prove that I'm tougher than the Europeans. They start throwing up and passing out from heat when it's only 35-40 degrees. I can handle 95-105.

Agreed. I don't think I could get a supersized TV through my door. My current set is 27", and it fits fine in my less-than-huge living room.
when the smallest exo-planet we could see was the size of Uranus.
The good thing is, the way the roads are in my city, that GPS will probably get clobbered by one of the potholes I hit.

Argh, I meant BIGGER than Windows!
That might have been true for DOS, but there's no excuse for ANYTHING to be better than Windows! Even Vista would almost run in 3GB.
Agreed. I suspect a lot of the disappointment is from people comparing it to the iPad. At roughly 1/3 the cost of an iPad, it doesn't suck.
Now we have 3,000 channels, but they still belong to 3 entities. :P

The GNOME 3 discussion isn't just on slashdot. The change to GNOME shell even drove Linus away from GNOME.
You think that's bad. After using Gnome 3 I heard Richard Stallman say "I feel dirty....I think I'll go take a bath."
Wow! I didn't think anything could make him do THAT!
You want a pony. You didn't say so, but if you can make assumptions unfounded by anything I said so can I.
Nah! Cleaning up horse poo is too much maintenance for me.
Until it rains. Then all your data washes out of the cloud and ends up in a puddle on the ground.
