You miss the point. These aren't for transporting large amounts of data from one place to another (though that ceritanly is one use for them). They are meant to be put in place to add storage to a network where it's needed instead of taking down a file server. Of course, there are situations where even this isn't as good an option as just adding more space to a server, but, that's neither here nor there..
I think the parent is probably referring to some of the pictures on google's early hardware photos page, courtesy of the wayback machine. If so, the lego never necessarily went into `production', it was just when they were messing around.
Plus, it says (and shows) very clearly that it was only a cover for a stack of HDD's they had. It didn't say it was holding servers together as the origional poster said.
I still stand by what I said. What the lawyer needs doesn't exactly reflect on what his pratice needs, nor the needs of the people under him/her.
At most of the firms I have done work for, the lawyer barely even touches their computer, save to look up a schedule, or look up something on Westlaw/Lexis-Nexis.
And "With all due respect", servicing a law office's computers entails more than making sure the hardware works. While I may not know exactly what all the software does, I am responsible for keeping said software in working order. That gives me a pretty damned good idea of how the myriad of offices in my area are run. Just because yours is SLIGHTLY different doesn't mean that yours is the model for how every firm is run on this planet. Believe it or not, there must be something that Abacus does that you don't need. They perceive the need for the software. It doesn't matter if they could do without and that they only think they need it because some sales rep convinced them they need it.
The last paragraph in your reply states my point perfectly. You have no idea what the people under you require, exactly. You are just sure their needs are different from yours. How, exactly, did that make you qualified to tell me how things go again, being as I am the one that ends up working with said people and obviously have a better idea of what they do than you?
Bah. Must be rather easy to find a lawyers page, and pretend to be them on slashdot, just to further your troll a little better. Have a nice day.
You really have no idea how a good law firm is run, do you? They most certianly do NOT only need "WP, a browser, and email". Five of the MANY law firms (in my service area) that I do computer service for ALL use Abacus, Time Slips, WordPerfect Legal Edition (has something to do with having some extra lay-outs that court systems use, etc), some sort of interoffice email in ADDITION to regular email (two of the lawfirms I service actually STILL use MS Postoffice for interoffice email!!), etc.
Beyond that, three of the firms I service use some sort of software that allowed them to look up case law (now it's online, but I think they still pay the same service fee that they did when they had to obtain the CD's).
A conversion to linux, let alone a painless and transparent one. HA! That'll be the day...
When you have a clue as to the subject at hand, come back and we'll be more inclined to listen to what you have to say.
I agree with the guy who already responded to you that is currently marked at Score: 0. It may very well have had to do with your tone. For proof that I am correct and you are not, just read further down the thread. Particularly the part where someone asked how to upgrade his system and about 20 or more people responded with how to update. I didn't see one RTFM (there could have been some that had been moderated down, I didn't look). But it still proves that your idea is not typical of the linux community -- at least not when speaking of the Gentoo community. That's the MAJOR reason I use Gentoo myself (and have installed several servers in schools/libraries/businesses that use Gentoo).
I feel I should add that it is NOT typical of the entire linux community. In the years I have been hanging out in the #gentoo channel on freenode, I don't recall ever once having seen someone say "You couldn't get it working? You must be ignorant."
"The electrolyser has a capacity of 0.54cu.m per hour" What are the chances that someone is going to make a joke about this? (If you don't get it, you're not looking hard enough or you don't have a dirty enough mind)
The hydrogen tank is located some distance from the house, and a small diameter pipe connects it to the utility gas line in the house. The gas is used as a domestic heater to provide hot water to a stove or burner, and operate a fuel cell to produce electricity for other appliances.
Why does a burner or a stove need hot water? Wouldn't the water put out the flame? =]
Maybe the first SFF, but I remember seeing a PCI card available in some catalog somewhere that would allow you to do this with any PC. Anyone remember the name of that one?
We have one of these in it's plastic bag in the shop. It consisted of an ISA card that looked *exactly* like a NIC (including the RJ-45 socket in it's back), a regular CAT-5 cable, a little box that plugged into the other end of the cable (which had a PS/2 keyboard and mouse port, plus video). You install the NIC-like card into the 'host' computer, install the software, and when windows pops up, the driver loads, and a second 'windows' pops up on the remote monitor. At this point, two users could do whatever two users could do with whatever hardware was on the system.
Worked rather well, for it's day. Definatly needed a decent machine, though. When the second user started working, you could notice little 'hickups' in the speed department.. =]
That information still depends on who you are. If you want any information, get ahold of me at mike at rechtien dot us. Once I know who you are, I'll determine wether I'll answer the questions. =]
This brings up a question I haven't really seen addressed just yet: Is the whole point of this service that you can't download email to your local machine via POP or whatever? I mean, you can't really serve ads to me via mutt.
They can if they attatch the ad to the bottom of the message like (insert major free web mail service here).
I worked for just over 4 years at Best Buy, store 108. Not only did they fire all the openly homosexual people (including myself) by creating situations where they could claim the employee was stealing, they were *also* cought stealing time as described in this article. I even got a check for a few measly dollars out of it.
In my situation, I was the 'in home pc-tech'. I had to use my own car. When I was in a car accident, I obviously could no longer continue in that job. My computer access was immediatly restricted so I couldn't finish the invoices I had outstanding. The white bankers box I had put all my invoices into while I was BEGGING to have my computer access restored 'vanished'. Shortly after that I was 'fired' for theft. Was I jailed? Nope. Fined? Nope. Had my pay check shortened to cover the 'loss'? Nope. They simply wanted to hire another in home computer tech and didn't have the money to do so without getting rid of the highest paid computer store tech that they had -- me. I saw all the 'tao' messages that had been sent back and forth to the support manager of the tech area.
This kind of crap goes on all the time, and it needs to stop.
What happened to the general manager of the store? Well, after being caught in MORE time-stealing, he was promoted to REGIONAL MANAGER!
With all the market segments they are getting into (groceries, general merchandise, eye-glasses, pharmacy, car repair, etc...), I'm just wondering when they are going to change their name to OCP.
Sad thing is that I also remember them, although the ones I remember had amber displays, and could do 2 or 3 lines of text. I remember the display being able to pivot as well.
Problem is, I can't remember what bank in which they were used.

Ummm.. I think you just did...
DOH! That should be WATER and burners/stoves! Silly me!

It was called "Buddy".
Here.

...there exists a motherboard that you can use to build a 2 user machine for your own home or business, although it's a regular ATX board.
Clicky.
There is one for the Intel crowd and one for the AMD crowd.
We have one of these in the shop, though I haven't gotten around to tinerking with it yet.

I have an 8" porn producer...in my pants!!
Really? Can I see? =]
You, sir, are an idiot.
No linux company (that I've ever heard of) copied another companies code and used it as their own.
No linux company (that I've ever heard of) has created a 'free' web browser to undercut another like MS did.
No linux company (that I've ever heard of) has been convicted of software piracy.
No linux company (that I've ever heard of) has been convicted of being a monopoly.
(I didn't read through all of the above link about NS vs IE article, but the skimming I did seems to cover much of it).
I could keep going, but you get the idea. MS *IS* an evil corporation. There are many *many* valid reasons to hate them.
Do us all a favor and crall back under your rock. Thanks for participating.

What happens when you run out of 1 inch parts to sent to all the people on the list?
All right... All right.. If no one else is going to respond, then I will, my son...
Gentoo will help in this reguard. Someone else has already figured everything out. All you do is merge it.
Seems like your already compiling some, if not all of Gnome anyway..
Now to watch this get modded down into oblivion because of all the "WE HATE GENTOO" zelots....
Upgrade to Pro / Run now / Cancel
NO, I don't want to upgrade now, just RUN.
Upgrade to Pro / Run now / Cancel
NO! I don't want to upgrade to the pro version! JUST RUN!!
Upgrade to Pro / Run now / Cancel
GET OFF MY SCREEN!! When I want the pro version I'll get to
Upgrade to Pro / Run now / Cancel
HELP! GO AWAY!!
Yup.. unintrusive.. Completely. (Of course, those aren't the exact wording on the buttons, but you all get the idea)...
Anyway..
I agree with everything she said about Konq. All of it's parts should be seperated into seperate programs. That thing is just horrible.
Pretty much everything else I can see her point, but I don't agree with bits here or there.
Konq though.. Shesh!
