  3. Paypal is my backup on Redundant Credit Card Processing Solution? · · Score: 3, Informative
I have my system set up with a main purchasing gateway, and also to use paypal as a backup/secondary option for users. I find this works quite well. On the off chance that the main gateway goes down I just have to switch a little HTML to make the paypal option the default and it continues to function.

It's true that there are some regions and/or users who are unable or unwilling to use paypal. However there are also some users who would prefer to use it when given the chance. So they cancel each other out in my opinion.

Paypal is easy to set up and they have an automatic notification system that you can hook into to fufill all your needs.

It took a while for hardware to become commoditized. Likewise it will take a while for the OS to become a commodity. It will happen eventually though.

I don't think that MS Windows will die completely, but their profit margins are going to go way down for sure. For that, I give a "Huzzah!"

  9. The real reason for this on Porn Site Sues Google Over Linked Images · · Score: 1

The real reason for this is for the porn site in question to get some publicity. Think about it for a second and it makes perfect sense. There are a bazillion-quillion porn sites around. This one just got a HUGE amount of press from their little lawsuit. It wasn't free, but for sure they are making a profit off the moneys they payed a lawyer to write up their lil lawsuit.

what sort of marketing approaches do you use to get the word out about your game other than your site and forum?

Google is my biggest driver of new traffic. Both using natural results and also using adwords. Software download sites also provide some traffic (more so on the macintosh side). And my slashdot sig brings in a surprising amount of people =)

What resources do you use for information on legal and tax issues?

The internet at large has a lot of information if you go looking for it. I am a member of the Association of Shareware Professionals, which contains a huge amount of experience from people that have been doing this for years. It costs $100 a year to join and get access to the private newsgroups and article archive.

Here's a discussion on the EA issue from the perspective of some independent game developers:
indiegamer.com forum thread about EA work conditions

A lot of the guys there are creating games and then releasing them for sale on the internet, totally ignoring the whole publisher/retail method. It's a real alternative for game devs. I am supporting myself in just this manner by my own game.
