Many people are confused on the issue of certified technicians for your auto. All but 2 states have a law that a mechanic must be 'test certified' to work on your car. You can negotiate any terms with anyone to do the work for you. Each state has different licensing, but they do not require you pass some test, just that you register with the state you do business in, Just like any business. Some states require tests for emmisions test inspectors, etc. But this is for compliance with the law, not to say they are competent mechanics.
Weren't the dino's in Jurrasic Park supposed to die if they didn't get an essential amino acid (lysine?). Look what happened there. Next thing you know Dr. Malcom will be running around telling us 'I told you so'.
They can render / replicate reality much better than a computer. Even the best computer graphics in the world don't compare to what an artist can do in terms of quality. Computers do a crappy job, but faster: Just like Windows....
The machine is being built to simulate nuclear explosions. How many of you would use the machine for this purpose? Just think, the most powerful machine of all time calculating better ways to destroy humanity. Just wait till the computer gets bored and uses it's circuits 'equivalent' to the human brain to do some real world tests.
I went to COMDEX Chicago last year, and it was awful. No T-shirts, keychains, or even a piece of candy. I'll bet you can tell the strength of the economy based on the amount of trade show give aways at any given convention.
BTW, I didn't even get to see any good booth bunnies. The best exhibit was the Mercedes booth which gave a free test drive that you could get a hat for participating in. The line was so long I even blew that off.
The reason raw sugar won't work, is because it will kill the ecoli. The water content in the bug is much higher than that in the surrounding media(pure sugar in this case). The water will will move towards the region of the high sugar content (following the gradient of high water concentration to low). This will dessicate the ecoli and kill them.
While everyone is thinking this guy is gonna loose his job, I bet he gets a lot more IT $$$ than other sys admins. I can't recall the number of times we spent big buck on cutting edge hardware that makes the organization flow smoother, only to get blank stares from administrators who come buy to see what they just spent all that money on. The more blinken lights on hardware, the more the managers feel like it's doing something. Show one of your managers a network closet with the lights low, and see thier eyes light up at all the fascinating lights. It kinda mesmorizes them. The perfect time to ask for more $$ for your department. Expensive IBM/Sun servers suffer from lack of flair big time.
I went through the same process when I was getting engaged. Conflict Diamonds really bothered me, so that was out of the question.
My grandmother recenlty passed away, and we were left with her jewelery. It was equally divided among her 3 male grandchildren. I got her mothers original engagement ring and wedding band. They made a great engagement ring/set, and will be something she can pass on to here grandchildren.
One of my brothers inherited her cocktail ring, and had a jewler make some additions to it along the same theme, and it was his engagement ring.
In anycase, all three of us recycled her jewlery, and used them as engagement rings. Our fiances loved them, and have something symbolic of the union of our families to pass on to thier grandkids.
I teach java a our community college, and stopped requiring a text years ago. Sun's java site has great documentation for begginers and the whole api documentation online for proficient programmers.
If you have specific implementations issues, the best place to go is Google groups. I teach a whole class on how to use google to answer programming questions. Chances are, your not the only one with a specific question, and you'll find the answer on google.
I recall Brazil developed an all ethanol product that was very successful, and not the 10% ethanol crap we use here in the US.
In Brazil, they grew sugarbeets, and then would crush them into a slush. They fermented this, and used the dried sugarbeet pulp as fuel for the distillation process. This resulted in a about 97% pure ethanol. Clean enough to run in your car with no ping. It was cost effective enough to compete with gas when gas was 'expensive' but I seem to recall todays prices are low enough to keep all ethanol fuel still a bit high.
When we look at ethanol in the US, it's a big farce. The 10% ethanol added to gasoline must be 100% pure in order to eliminate pinging. You can't get 100% pure ethanol by distillation alone, so you have to go through an expensive chemical drying process, and you end up with a ludicrous price on the end product.
He who sacrifiecs even the smallest amount of liberty in search of security deserves neither. (Paraphrase of Ben Franklin) Now is not the time to abandon our constitutional rights. As geeks, we all know there is no such thing as an uncrackable system. Even if technically unbreakable, human error will still allow a breach of security. No system is uncrackable, and no measure will prevent another 9/11. Why sacrifice freedom for a false sense of security?
I do not advocate eliminating some physical controls to make it very difficult to repeat another 9/11, because some very simple remedies will go along way without violating our human rights. Physical seperation of the cockpit from the cabin would have made 9/11 a complete failure. And lets not forget that even with a valid ID, explosive shoes made it on to an airlineer when security personel where most on their toes(no pun intended).
Here is the FCC Chairman's listed phone number from the FCC website. Keep this line busy for a few weeks and we'll see how his office reacts to "a reduced expectation of privacy".

Some people can outcompete a raytracer:
They're called artists.
