Have you ever looked at price markups at your average retailer? Computers, laptops, printers cost a lot to produce. They have very little markup. In cartridges, cables, cleaning items and such are very easy to replace. These items have very high markup. Otherwise why do you think they try to get you to buy extra cables, extra ink, extended warranties and such so often? It's not because they care about you, but instead they want to make money from you.

Because at many stores (including the one I work at) it is cheaper to tell the person to test it out at home and possibly lose the sale than spend an extra hour trying to find a good monitor for you, the asshole customer.

In other words, if you come into my store and insist on that, you're either walking out the door with a monitor that may be defective, or you will walk out with nothing. I don't really know that many stores that are allowed the manpower to do what you describe except early morning on weekdays, and even then I don't think it applies.

Some people are really bothered by dead pixels, some aren't. Also it depends on the type of dead pixel. I'm not going to go searching for dead pixels any more than using a plain black and plain white screen. To do more, when the dead pixel is totally unnoticeable any other way, would be stupidity because if it's good enough for you, why should you have to wait a month to get your "new" PSP when you paid for it for that month?

Also, they want to try and get as many people to deal with it as possible, because replacing handhelds under warranty costs them a bit of money.

And yes, I have seen 10-inch LCDs at that res. It's painful for me.....

In Illinois the tax on grocery items is something like 1.5% on average, and the average sales tax is something like 7 or 8%.

In Wisconsin and Ohio I know there is no tax on food (at least in the areas I have been in, it may be different in different counties).

In Indiana and Pennsylvania there is some tax on food, less than the regular sales tax, but there.

The funny thing is, in areas I have been that tax groceries, the tax on fast food is about the same as the sales tax. In the areas that don't tax groceries, generally the tax on fast food is nonexistant.

Disclaimer: This has been my experience and the only places I have spent enough time in to gauge the long term effectively are parts of IL and WI.

You are absolutely right about everything you say. Let me add, however, one more point about Firewire and DV. One other reason it is the standard for DV is because it is not a bus topology like USB is. That is what makes USB require a host that does all the traffic routing. With Firewire, the traffic routing is like a highway, with USB it's more like a string of traffic lights.

I've had the low-end Canon, HP, and Epson printers (current or almost current models). The Canon and Epson print heads rarely need to be changed unless you let the printer sit for 5 months without printing a page and the nozzles get clogged to the point of no return. Canon, even factoring in the cost of the long-life print heads is still going to be cheaper than the equivalent HP, and even usually the Epson.

This is like saying that the HP laser printers are so much more cost effective than companies that make the toner cartridge and drum assembly separately. They aren't. For people that tend to fuck up the drum a lot, yes, it helps. But most people aren't that stupid. And, no, it's not too hard to fuck the drum if you either do or don't know what you're doing.

From the reviews by security experts, this is less secure than most other fingerprint readers used in non-consumer applications. It takes a less precise reading of your finger than just about any other fingerprint reader, especially those used in most "secure" applications.

There's also the fact that it sends and stores the fingerprint info, mainly unencrypted, on the local hard drive so that it can match it. If you can get that information and which points need to match, it's relatively easy to make a fake that will match.

Laptop manufacturers need to realize that there are people that want a low power, low cost laptop that runs cool and has long battery life. Even their low level laptops they come out with now would be considered top of the line 6-12 months ago.

The batteries are getting a little better, but not good enough. Mainly they are just getting larger and heavier.

I would be happy paying $500 for a low-speed laptop (about 1 GHz) with a smaller screen and CD-RW drive. But nobody will release one like this. So I'm stuck paying about $1000 or more for a laptop with a larger screen, faster processor, and more advanced optical drive than I need. It also runs hotter and not as long as the laptop I actually want on the same battery.
