I will pay whatever it takes to watch stupid cat tricks on my cellphone! I will allow verizon to make direct withdrawals from my savings account ad libum if they allow me to take screenshots from stupid cat trick videos and make them into wallpapers for my cell phone.
I spend almost all of my time fixing things, and I think life is richer for it. It's an incredible learning experience and those that fix and repair are far better suited to create as well.
As for all of your accusations about this or that being "juvenile" - OS has been trying to penetrate to a larger audience for some time now - what seems juvenile to you is considered "user friendly" to others, and there's nothing wrong with that especially when you have the power to modify or disable these features. Additionally, a lot of people go into OS because they are enthusiastic, creative individuals striving to produce more than just a paycheck. Don't confuse creativity for immaturity.
I would propose that it may have something to do with cancer. Having a system in place capable of emulating fetal development in the adult, especially a system that would have to be designed to interact with adult tissue would open up a slew of potential places for growth to get out of control in response to injury or aberrant activation.
thumbnails that claim to lead to porn that really only lead to more thumbnails that then lead to pop-up technology so sophisticated that it validates the existence of a higher being, and apparently he doesn't want us getting to that 1% very easily.
"Your best bet is to take the money and tow the line till the funding runs out then claim new findings counter to what the evil corporation wanted and then seek government funding to sort it out."
Wow, that sounds like one of the worst things you could do. Then you sacrifice reputation, research quality, and potentially set-back your entire field with ambiguous or conflicting data.
Why not take the money, do research with as little bias as possible, and report the results no matter which way they sway? Be it the government or a corporation, everyone has an agenda, and there always exists opportunities for personal gain by slanting the results of research. But there are a lot of researchers out there the just really want to figure out what the truth is, and if a corporation will fund them to do this - why not? They can always apply for gov. funds if their results piss off the company that originally funded them.
but surely there are a lot of corporations and oil companies and the like that would certainly like to see research stating, "nothing to see here, move along." I imagine there is some decent funding to be found in the private sector for this kind of research.
While it's great that this research was carried out and has provided some reasoning behind caloric restriction, it's not a very shocking finding at all. The aging process is just a series of chemical reactions, some that we understand, some that we do not. Most organic reactions are slowed down significantly by relatively small decreases in ambient energy (lowering temp). Hence aging process should be expected to slow down as well.
"Hi, I'm a PC." "And I'm a Mac. My insides are all scrambled up. It protects me from dangerous crackers." "All scrambled up?" "Yep, that's right, my most important parts are very heavily scrambled." "Does it hurt when you poop?" "like you wouldn't believe"
yes but Arnold (the govenator) is trying to change all of this. He is starting a movement where they throw hobos at rocks.

do civilizations get wiser or more just as time goes on or as the population grows?
my civilization doesn't seem to be following that trend.

I think that even the laziest person in the world wouldn't find pressing buttons on a telephone to be too hard of a task.
but what if their fingers are too fat?
weird, why doesn't Amazon just use their lawyers?

right, but Alive is well suited for human consumption, if that's the kind of thing you're looking for.
is snakes on a plane inappropriate material?
this is harldy a new issue considering laptops have been on planes for years now.
"Address Space [Layout] Randomization). What it does is, each Windows Vista machine is slightly different than every other Windows Vista machine"
Sweet. now my computer can crash in ways yours can't even dream of.

you're going to have to be more specific than that. nothing in the parent struck me as being untrue.
how about these folks? or these? or perhaps this group or maybe one of the paypal horror-story contributors on this site?
but chances are it was probably just this guy.

this is why I never sign on to slashdot in public when there is the chance that someone might look over my shoulder.
seriously, I imagine printed material from Hustler magazine and the like are a lot cheaper thanks to the contributions of the interweb.
I would still swear I read wiki for the articles though.
dammit, now I'm going to spend the rest of the day wondering where the heck I put mine.
Pirates wear patches, not boyscouts. What is this world coming to?
Are there females >7 at a Trek convention? Seems highly illogical to me. Are you sure they're not booth-babes or something?
