  2. Two Camps on Ideas for High School Computer Club Activities? · · Score: 2, Interesting

the Computer Club currently seems to be split into two groups. One group mostly plays multiplayer games such as Tribes, while the other group embarks on lessons on how to use our server, as well as basic tutorials in programming languages we use such as PHP.

That's basically how it is at my school as well. Our computer club is mainly kids who play video games, but thanks to our great technology department we know have something made for the other type. We call it St. Paul's Technical Services, St. Paul's being the school and technical services being what we offer. The school has a laptop program, and with a few hundred machines being on campus problems arise. Mainly we trouble-shoot Windows programs and the like, but from time to time we deal with hardware too. This (2002-2003) year was our first, so it was all kind of "unplanned". But next year is looking much better.

  7. Re:8 Devices? How 'bout 256? on Control 8 Electrical Devices With Your Parallel Port · · Score: 1

You could also boost the amount of devices using only transistors. You have 8 basic imputs, add a few transitors to make AND/OR gates and the rest is common sense from there. The best use of this (other than the want for more devices ofcourse) is so you can use a thinner cable. UTP Cat5 cable is cheap, but it only has 4 pairs, so eight wires, one has to be the ground. So now we have 7 data wires and 1 ground. 1 - 7 1 AND 2 - 1 AND 7 2 AND 2 - 2 AND 7 3 AND 3 - 3 AND 7 4 AND 4 - 4 AND 7 5 AND 5 - 5 AND 7 6 AND 6 - 6 AND 7 7 AND 7 ... same goes for OR, if you really need connections you can go even deeper (2 AND 4) OR (5 OR 6)

space? money? The setup works well, you have your servers within arms reach, your IT people are there too. We have something like that at my school, a room thats always got the thermostat set to -500 calvin and all the servers in a row, along with two desks for the administrator and IT director. People don't comming there -- and when they forget their password (or anything of that nature) they have to, you would think that this would lead to less of these cases.
