  1. Improbable .... on Bush Wants an Unhackable Private Network · · Score: 1

Well, the US government doesn't have the best record when it comes to security of any kind. They can try using their technology ( like tempest [http://www.eskimo.com/~joelm/tempest.html] and whatnot) though they will always have a problem with the users of the system. Poloticians arn't very good at keeping their own lives straight how do we expect them to keep there personal security which is vital to the network as a whole?

  2. Spam does work on Exposing Spammers For All They're Worth · · Score: 1

Well, it kind of does. It seems that if they send you the same basic spam letter with the same subject you remember it. And if you remember it it's as good as a TV comercial or radio ad.

I've heard people talking about specific spam before in university classes. Sad thing was I knew what they were talking about.

  3. Do we elect these people? on Libraries Asked To Destroy Reports, Databases · · Score: 1

Do we? Generally speaking the people want security officers who know what they are doing as much as possible. Would we want to put a garbage man friend-of-a-polotician the role of head CERT offical. Heck no! So why do we seem to always get these knee jerk reactions for covering up information that is, well, informative?

This isn't the America I read about in books.

  4. Homemade Unix on Federal Computers Fail Hacker Test · · Score: 3, Interesting

A boss of mine a few years back was an ex-administrator on a private mil network. I picked his brain about some of the stuff and he explained that they use NT on the public networks (IE: for email to friends and family and other trivial things) and a hommade UNIX version for their private/secure networks. Of course this was just for his area of the military.

As for the DOJ, I met a guy who was arested for cracking into it when he was 19. He explained that it is a lot easier than people think and he cracked it about 11 times before he was caught. He now works for a large security consulting group.

  5. Not to old on How Did You Become a UNIX Administrator? · · Score: 2, Informative

You are not to old. Don't let anyone tell you that! I worked with a guy who decided to become an admin at 43 and he's doing more than great working at a huge network.

As for degees, CS or other CS like degrees are good (sans MIS ofcourse), though proving your worth can take you much farther in some cases. I got my first admin job out of high school by talking over the other admins head, though I didn't mean to.

  7. Rise Above on What Do You Do When CS Isn't Fun Any More? · · Score: 1

I say finish the degree since there is only a year left and see how you feel. If you want to do something else, then you can easily pay for school by doing a simple IT/Admin job somewhere and do homework in your spare time ... and belive me, there is LOTS of spare time doing IT/Admin stuff!

  8. IBM and Profit on IBM Launches Public Domain Project "Eclipse" · · Score: 1

I've read a few posts on how this isn't a good thing since IBM is going to make a profit off it. I think that if they do indeed make a profit off it that it is a very good thing! How many times have we unfortunatly seen a great OSS project fail or have to cut back on development because the company was going under?

In a nutshell, if this works we'll have another Open Source Buisness Model which we've all been itching for for a while now.

For some reason I have a hard time beliving that. There seems to be a divide with people liking that show: either you love it and watch it all the time, or you can't belive that kind of 'smut' is on television cable or not.

I think it really depends on the society in 2051. It could vary well be compleatly diffrent from todays wants, lusts, and hungers. I mean, look at the diffrence between 1991 and 2001 it's almost like a compleatly diffrent world.

Oh, MULTICS was terrible! You could hardly even consider it multiuser. It was a good OS for the time, but UNIX killed.

I guess a way to look at it is UNIX is still going strong while Honeywell, which made multics, now does other stuff.

  11. Grey Goo Theory on The Dangers of Nanotech · · Score: 2, Interesting

I belive that is the term used for it. It is a theory that states if one nanotech bot is formed incorrectly and reproduces at a much faster rate the entire world can be turned into whatever it is supose to be fixing. IE: If the nano's are creating a certian protien the whole world would become replicas of the protien (and nanos changing eachother into them). The biggest problem would be how to stop it since putting it into conatinment would just turn the containment into the protiens as well.

Besided the DMCA sticking it's nose in (No, you can't own a DVD player from another country, Joe American!), it seems unlikely to be ported to the US. Remember how long it took the Saturn, the PS2, and Super Falcom (sp?) to make it to other countried? Not to mention most cool video games are Asian Market only.
