There is a payoff between very fast maps (usually based on static pre-generated images) and dynamic maps (content coming from a spatially aware database). The static map route usually leads to reduced feature set, including but not limited to the ability to only view things at "canned" levels. Dynamic map content served up by technologies such as ESRI</shamless plug> allows you to zoom to any level / extent you want.
The project I'm currently working on should be exactly what you're looking for: Application site or Marketing mumbo jumbo. You can get reports and maps on an adhoc basis or via a subscription model. </shamless plug>
Good point. In my situation, graduate school classes and research are much easier with a broadband connection. Also, I host a couple of websites/mail servers for my family and really like the ability to do that. I just wish it was cheaper, thats all.
At JavaOne this week Sun also mentioned that they are working on an "auto-update" feature for Java. Also, as posted in another comment (I apologize for the redundancy), Sun announced that they just struck deals with HP and Dell to pre-install the JRE on all new machines. Take that microsoft!
While attending the JavaOne conference this week in San Francisco, one of the key points made is that Sun is trying to simplify this process. They talked in specifics like removing the java icon in the tray which, when clicked, brings up a java console...obviously not a consumer feature. They have launched two new sites also: java.com for consumers and java.net for techies. Looks like they'll be working on the user experience of getting Java onto the consumer machine.
The other item of interest at the conference was the announcement of a deal with both hp and dell to ship the jre on new systems from each respective company. Interesting from the recent ms decisions to not bundle it with windows...
I recently picked up a GDM-5410 (Sun) 21-inch Trinitron monitor on ebay. At $165 including shipping it was a steal. These monitors are industrial strength and couldn't look any better. There are typically several on ebay at any given time. Good luck!
Thank you to all who pointed out that the problem is at my isp. I am in the process finding another isp. Any suggestions for verizon telco in southern ca?
I host several domains as a hobby for my family. Recently my ip address made it into a listing on spews.org. Am I a spammer? By no means. Am I screwed? Absolutely. After reading spamming newsgroups I found that I am not alone. At first I was just getting blocked because I was sending mail ( my own smtp server ) from a "known" spamming source when in fact I'm not a source of spam. My IP happens to fall into a larger block of ip's that my ISP owns, some of which are sources of spam.
This was a minor setback, but now other services are starting to use bulk email sources as deny lists for their offerings. My free dns provider, zoneedit now prohibits me from adding / modifying any of my zones. This is simply not acceptible to me. The way spews is set up, it is not easy for my ip to get off the list. My ISP cannot just call them up and take me off. There has to be a way to avoid this, and eliminating spam at a higher level would be a good start.
My Tivo subscription price just dropped from 9.99/month to 4.99/month. Is this a sign that Tivo realizes things are not looking good and thus they are trying to keep existing customers and lure new customers with reduced fees?
Yes, but not vpn in through a checkpoint firewall -- possible only by configuring the firewall for special cases (which my company does not do often) or by using the securemote client (a product by checkpoint). Thanks for the heads up though!
At my company we have VPN access in to a Checkpoint firewall. I use SecuRemote from my win2k boxen at home to establish the VPN. Currently, I do not know of a solution to doing this with a mac with the exception of trying to make it work with VirtualPC or something similar.
The other thing I would require is Visual Source Safe access. I know there is Visual Source Offsite (or something like that), but I want to use the normal client. It was not my choice to go with VSS in the first place in our group, but we did...if only we were using CVS things would be dandy, but the fact remains, that if I go OSX, I will lose functionality in both of these areas. Anyone know of a solution for either?
With these two requirements met, I would jump ship in a heartbeat. In fact I may do it just to have a nice personal machine and not worry about doing work stuff on it! I'm ready to switch.
As already stated, Faith is what allows the logical mind to believe in God. While trying to not go off topic and not to sound 'Holier than thou', I would like to add the following quote from a DC Talk song in reference to Titus 1:16:
"The greatest single cause of Atheism in the world today is Christians, who acknowledge Jesus with their lips and walk out the door and deny Him by their lifestyle. That is what an unbelieving world simply finds unbelievable."
What If I Stumble by dc Talk
"They claim to know God, but by their actions they deny Him. They are detestabke, disobedient, and unfit for doing anything good."
Titus 1:16 (NIV)
To the logical there is no reason to profess to believe as others do when their actions don't match up and may not portray any different lifestyle than the athiest. I've struggled with this paradox many times. The spectrum of -- Truth -- Grace -- Faith -- is not something which can be proven or completely understood, however the goal of most christians is to live more and more within this continium each day.
I don't understand it all -- no one can, but it's the process of trying/believing/accepting that makes a Christian a Christian.
I would agree with you in your comment that reality plays out according to the laws of physics in the scientific world, however you must also consider the non-scientific world -- specifically in the areas of thoughts, emotions, instincts, etc. Can you formulize the actions of human beings?
Just my 2 cents.

This is evident in Sun's iPlanet suite of application servers. You can get the entire enterprise edition of the server as a command-line set of tools absolutely free, however the nice GUI's for application deployment, monitoring and configuration will cost you.
In my undergraduate studies, we named our solaris boxes after famous mountains, i.e. whitney, olympus, hood, everest, etc. Kind of fun. Currently at work, we have a bunch of our higher profile boxes named after colors. Not sure what you would do with your large number of servers however.
I'm not sure I like the idea of having a convention. Say, for example, a hacker gets ahold of a security hole on machine test34.company.com. If there's a convention, what's to stop him from guessing what another machine on your net is? Just a thought. Creativity is my vote in this arena.
I can totally relate to this description of management being detached. After trying to deal with this myself I came to an important personal conclusion. How detached am I from management? Am I asking the right questions at the right time? Am i spending too much time working on things that I'm not reasonably sure will be part of a final product? The point is that the communication channel must be 2 way. You can expect to have problems if you're not accepting feedback from management along the way.
Think of it as finishing a loop of code when you could break halfway through. The processing time is wasted in needless clock cycles because you're not checking to see if you should continue what you're doing. Maybe that's a bad analogy, but hopefully my you get my point.
Yes, there are times when I hate my job, but it's probably mostly due to the fact that I make things harder than they really are. Communicate, Respond accordingly as the project unfolds, and be happy because you're not doing monotonous work!

...is at what point he gives up his monthly internet bill.
I've been looking at my monthly budget for ways to save a few bucks and dsl is costing a lot, but I feel I can't let go of it.

Yeah, I'm a sucker...I just registered hoop.la just because I could. Oh well. What do I do with it now?

What ever happened to the option of installing via ftp or nfs? I would like to do that as I don't have a cd burner.
In the old days it was no problem to make a boot floppy and do this. Anyone know if this is possible with 8.0?

Sorry, I'm an idiot. Link should be netbeans without the other stuff. Cheers.
Sun has developed Forte for Java which is based on netbeans. It now goes by Sun One Studio. Anyway, it is a nice IDE and users at my company are generally split 50/50 between that and JBuilder. They have a free Community version as well as some commercial versions.

Maybe I missed it, but I didn't see a link to purchase it anywhere.
Good to see a wwc person posting. Keep up the good work!

Your exactly right here. It will just take some time to transpire, but soon enough we'll have it. Cheers
