I agree with most of what you say, except that you refer to "all forms of communication" being open, and that is somewhat silly. All forms? I mean, standards are great, and governments should do what they can to make standards standard. But they can't stop all people from communicating using protocols or file formats of their choosing.
That seems like the obvious answer. Wiki stuff doesn't seem to have made it fully into the mainstream quite yet (meaning "it's still mostly techy and therefore male dominated"), but with the amazing growth of wikipedia, I think it's a matter of time before a good one for recipes gets underway. Sexist as it may seem, recipes won't happen in a big way until more females are involved.
I think I misread the boss as being the male and the employee being female. Oh man, glad this is slashdot because I would catch a lot of hell for that kind of mistake in a less-all-male arena.
"I want to turn off the f**king beep sound when i get an email. Turning down the volume is not a solution, that denies me the use of the sound system of my computer. It really doesn't matter what I use the sound for, if its not bothering anyone else nearby, I like my sound, so bite me. I just don't want a f**king beep with every f**king email, its distracting. Comprende?"
"Fine, you don't know, why not just say so. I know I can turn down the volume you tard, so no need to be Mr. No-It-All like the assh*loes in IT. And stop looking down my shirt. I am so going to quit next week."
That should be modded as insightful not funny. If I was the company I'd think that feature would be used far more useful than their fake sounding little recordings. (except instead of just maipulating the sound, why not actually have it could lose the connection?)
It was a personal check, not a city check. Dumb, but not quite as dumb. This was before he was mayor, he was only a councilman, so I guess it didn't hurt him too bad.
And yeah, the "please" thing confused me for the first few weeks of college (at UC). The other things were, they say "sweep" rather than "vacuum", and they leave out "to be", for instance, "the carpet needs swept".
Agree, but given the unlikelihood of that happening, here is a guy who makes a good skyline chili knockoff and it's dirt cheap (vs. $5 a can for real skyline sent mail order). It's spices only, you have to add meat and tomato sauce but its real easy to make.
People are often inethical, and will typically do what is best for themselves. Evolution made us this way. So what. Calling attention to this does not fix the problem.
If all people were truly ethical and non-selfish, we wouldn't need locks on doors, or police or even governments, money or the concept of property. Everyone would just be nice and share their stuff and not try to advance their own cause at the expense of others -- and there would be happiness and bliss.
Fact is, we aren't made that way, so we need practical solutions, not just figuring out who to blame.
I'm not sure which is more annoying, the rude way you use your phone in public or the way you imply that being a "top IT executive blah blah blah" makes you more important than anyone else.
Why not GPL (or similar) though? By making it GPL, they would force others to keep their modifications open, which is good for all. (at least that is the argument for GPL over BSD, and it seems to apply here just as well as in other places)
I believe worker honeybees do die when they sting. Regardless, I didn't mean to imply that all colony-type animals "should" behave in a kamakazi nature like that....only that there is not nearly as strong reason for them *not* to do so (compared with non-colony animals).
I'm sure you are right about the pheromones from the queen, but I think your conclusions about cause and effect are a bit backwards. Pheromone systems like that are most likely to evolve in a colony sitution. Bee colonies are almost like single organisms in an evolutionary sense (because of the way the reproduce), so that level of interoperation is likely to happen, just as hormones happen within a single organism.
In a species that reproduces directly, it is harder for pheromones-communication system to evolve, since it must be in the interest of each individual to respond "correctly" to the pheromone. In other words, you could have a conflict of evolutionary interest.
Ants bees and termites have an advantage when it comes to social complexity though: because they have a queen (rather than the workers reproducing directly) a fundamentally different Darwinian dynamic happens, that encourages cooperation. It's not intelligence as much as it is their evolutionary "motivators" that cause them to work together as they do rather than compete with each other as other animals often do.
(Note that a worker bee is designed to die when it stings, since its only motivation is what is good for the colony, rather than what is good for itself. That would *never* happen in a species where all the individuals could reproduce directly.)
Geez, lighten up. Have you never seen a movie where the protagonist was a clever, talented criminal? Did you ruin the movie for everyone by complaining that he is breaking the law so therefore no one should enjoy the movie or like the main character?
Yeah, what they did was illegal and immoral. So what? Don't do it yourself -- but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy the story and have a little bit of admiration for the guys. Anyway, jail time was served.
....on the "advancing ideological goals" thing? I'm not seeing it. The stem cell issue comes to mind, for one.

Ok, just for the hell of it, her side:

Ok shoot me for posting before really thinking it through, mr. evil manipulative marketing fuck. Glad you didn't have mod points today. :)
I actually had first written "except maybe in manhattan or something" but for some reason I backspaced it away before I hit post.
I have been to NY, and the memory of its obnoxious drivers makes me appreciate living in San Francisco.

...sound here will get busted. Too many horns. I'd know it was fake and I'd think most people would.

Too late, she died today.
the news is about wines, not about movies
If that is really true, why is it on slashdot?

Sorry if I'm late on this one...but...

You say that, but then again the vast majority of Web users (and I include home users here) think that either AOL or Yahoo! is the Internet.
And exactly why are they doing a search for Firebird the database?

They'd probably make MORE moneyb if they developed software in an honest manner.
Ahhh, youthful idealism. Charmingly refreshing!
The employee was the one doing the biting.
We not only get rid of mines, but wipe out color blindness. Two birds with one stone!
I can't see this being accepted if it is an only microsoft thing.
If it becomes a true standard, and you have a choice of which provider to use, I think it is the perfect solution. (much as I hate to agree with BG)
