Microsoft are going to make a tablet? About fucking time. I want to take notes on it with a stylus, not wave my fingers over the screen going 'oooo, I can make pictures big'. I want to be able stuff a USB stick in the side of it and put directories of data on it, not sync it to a fucking iTunes program running on an entirely separate computer (because, amongst other things, my Gentoo box really loves running iTunes).

And it will sell as well as all of the other tablets that have been previously manufactured which MS has developed the software for. You guys really don't get why the iPad is selling, do you? It's because it doesn't have all of the crap that you think is "essential". The thing is, you guys are a very small market, populated by low-disposable-income types. You are not a particularly desirable demographic. As such, you'll be perfect for the bottom feeders that will supply you with cut-rate, crapola hardware coupled with a cut-rate, crapola OS that you both desire and so richly deserve. Have fun shopping at WalMart for it. Pick up a can of Pringles while you're there to make your experience complete.

I looked at the websites. Typical 3-column layout with sectional organization. I saw very little in the way of clutter, as long as you take into account the visual difference between Kanji and Western characters. The sites *look* more cluttered to the Western eye because the Kanji are much more square and, because of the uniform spacing, seem more dense. In addition, being abstract to those who don't know the language, the brain processes them as abstract graphical elements rather than the main text for the site. The bottom line is that there's little difference between the layout of jal.com and ual.com (or mora.jp and amazon.com). Look at it, and tell me there's a huge difference once you see that the Kanji is text - if anything, the main difference is that the Japanese sites use too much text and not enough big, gaudy graphics.

You do understand that segregation in the South pre-Civil Rights Act existed by force of law, not by choice of business?

You do understand that the local governments merely codified the will of the people living in those states at the time, don't you? And that the number of businesses that would have chosen to serve all people equally were minuscule (if for no other reason than they would have either (a) faced huge social push-back from the majority white population or (b) lost significant income as their white customers left)? Of course, acknowledging this doesn't fit well with your world view - you might have to give up a Libertarian fantasy-world talking point.

Amazingly, the most successful night clubs at the time were black owned night clubs that would allow anybody in who wanted to pay (and after one booked Buddy Holly because they thought he was black, would book any act that appealed to their audience).

Citation needed (particularly about black night clubs doing better - I trust you about the Buddy Holly part). And, BTW, even if what you say is true (which I doubt - most "black" businesses were seriously undercapitalized) night clubs are not a particularly true reflection of an entire economy. Show statistics that demonstrate, in general, that businesses which served black people did better than those which served the white populace only. I don't think you can do it.

Personally, I do not know any conservatives that want big government in any flavor at all.

Um, did you not notice the administration that governed from 2000-2008? Oh yeah... they weren't "real conservatives". OK... then anyone who disparages Bill Clinton's presidency as "liberal" is wrong because he wasn't a "real liberal". Plus, you've just immunized Obama's presidency from the cranks on Fox News as well because he's not a "real socialist".

What world do you Libertarians inhabit? Where so you get these odd, odd historical ideas? Are you aware how divorced from reality you are?

Why would Amazon or Comcast ever make this deal public? All you'd know is that Amazon's pages are showing up faster or that your other choice of vendor had a lot more server problems. How would their customers ever know?

Net neutrality tells the providers that they can't charge for tiered access, something they already do.

In addition to concerts and merch, publishing. Publishing is usually split 50-50 between the publishing company and the songwriter(s) and the record company is pretty much out of this, unless the publisher also happens to be owned by the record company. In many cases, the publishing money can be the major part of what the artist gets to live on. Artists can also, if their contract is written properly, get another bit of a bump (or at least, a paydown in their indebtedness) via the sale of synchronization licenses, which are required for use of ones song on TV, in movies, or in commercials. However, the record company as rights-holder can always license the song for cheap to its sister media companies, further screwing the artist. Bottom line, you lie down with dogs, you get fleas.
