But I can't get over all these Slashdot 'libertarians'... More than ever I see them pushing their magic solution/trick -- [look ma, no guv'ment]. Yet the social consciousness doesn't go beyond having gadgets and/or lower taxes.

We have seen this argument forever--usually when things start to improve. Believe that I am sympathetic to the notion that these Democrats are far from perfect. But I refuse to accept this static interpretation above.

The "nothing will change" message is not impartial as it may seem. It blurs things. It is an attempt to spread our rightful contempt for the current administration to any moderate improvements that could be made.

I consider this to be partisan disinformation of the "Apple is just as bad as Microsoft" variety. It encourages the hopelessness necessary to prevent realization of the differences.

On the one hand, you suggest OS X is somehow better than the others. But then you also suggest that despite this, it isn't worth a bit more. You also say that Jobs keeps "jacking up the price", yet we all know Macs are more affordable than ever. I could tell you who is not being competitive here but you must first you must decipher this riddle:

Would you prefer 5 of the more affordable (and abundant) $1 bills, or the superior (but less competitive) $5 bill?

Like so many of the "Macs-are-more-expensive-see-I-can-get-a-Dell-for- less" Slashdotters, you may prefer the less expensive $1 bill because obviously it's more affordable and you can GET MORE OF THEM. Duh!

This is also why I hate the OS X "packaging" that everyone loves so much -- your app has to check for updates by itself, if it wants them, and it's designed to include all libraries within the .app, so your program never has external dependencies.
Hate is a strong word, and I don't believe that you are correct. The .app's own package is just one *domain* (or "scope") in which to include frameworks/libraries.

Unfortunately, not having external dependencies means not being able to automatically take advantage of improvements in those dependencies.
Well, there is another side to that coin... Portability/Easily moved/Compatibility. How flexible/or/simple to make it is of course the choice of the developer.
