EFM (enlightenment file manager). I have been waiting for that for a while. I'd like to see how E's stuff stack up against the two big FMs. Just my two cents
That perhaps this sort of thing isn't aimed at the "hackerz 'R us" crowd. I try to give big companies at least a little credit for having gotten where they are today, and I definitly try to never underestimate my enimies. However it seems to me that this sort of thing wouldn't be aimed at those of us who are smart enough not to buy it. I think probably what they are trying to do, is to get the goodly number of people who think that they are hot shit just for downloading a song off of napster. These are the people who buy something just because its the "latest and greatest" and completely ignore the number of problems/bugs it has, but buy it just because it's new and supposedly better. Now, the average slashdot reader isn't going to be caught up by this but alot of people would be, the people who dont know any better (and we all know how many of those there are) These are the people who will buy the product, find out that they are screwed, and say "hmm they're too smart for me" and continue to buy products that work with the piece of crap they originally bought and have the same limitations.
Nobody but nobody questions TMBG. Whenever I have someone listen to you guys for the first time and they look at me all puzzled and ask WTF? (however much they love it) I respond with a hail of `why ask why` and `just enjoy it`. That being said, the one question that I've always posed is, "Is it all incredibly artistic and brilliant beyond my imagination, or do you have far too much fun doing what you love?".
Ok ma'am. This is what you need to do to fix your problem. First, walk through the green door. To your right there will be a veriticle lever. Pull it down. A door should open up below you. Pick up the red key. Walk back through the green door and go down the stairs to your right... etc.
It would also make hacking a lot more fun.
"sir why is there a hole in that wall"
"uh oh.. looks like we have a hacker
Hmmmmm... yeah... just think about mouses with 3 axis' (axisies?) A joystick with a third axis (flipper or some such) would work. Hey, maybe I can convert my nes powerglove to navigate (ok, twitch thumb twice to enter door). I'll be very interested to see what arises in this field.
..who misses Journeyman Project? The 7th Guest is by far my favorite game of all time (stauf scared the shit outta me). I really miss those old games and wish that somebody would come out with something new and exciting in that area. Kings Quest, Gabrial Knight, 7th Guest, (and even) Myst were my staple games once upon a time. Lets see those days again.
Mind informing us what Bill is gonna do? Bill is already under heavy fire from the DOJ and every move he makes is being watched. The last thing he needs right now is proof positive that he hindered the creation of software for an opposing OS and furthering the monopoly that windows is. There is very little bill can do to stop us now.
I think matrix won in all the right places. Special effects (no brainer), visual effects (ditto), audio effect (a nice touch), and film editing (a close call with American Beauty). I would have like to have seen it nominated for best film, but nominated only. American Beauty is definitly an all around better film.
That just about does it for me. Baldur's Gate is the one remaining reason that I have for having winblows on my system (well and uploading to my rio, soon to be rectified with 2.4 kernel and usb support =). Quake III almost did it for me, but I just couldn't bring myself to get rid of Baldurs Gate. If they port baldur's gate 2, well, that just about does it. If they could port BG1 while they're at it, I would greatly appriciate it (just give the job to loki). Neverwinter Nights has been porting to linux since they started making the game, so that's no big suprise.
WTF? Come on. Run Lola Run was one of the best movies this year. It wasn't nominated for one thing! I was, needless to say, more than a little upset. I don't know how many of you have actually seen it, but those of you who have, I'm sure you agree with me.
With all of the original programming that Loki is currently doing (openAL, SMPEG, etc...) the gaming community should really take off, now that we have XFree86 4.0 all we really need is full development of the APIs we currently have, and possibly the 2.4 kernel (with USB support and the like). We already have one of the biggest game names (quake I, II, III) ported. I'm looking forward to Alpha Centauri (highest ever rated game in PCGamer). We really, really, really, really, need to get diablo II ported. After that it's just a matter of time.
This interview shows some really good signs of things really coming together. I was never a Heavy Gear fan but I think I may need to go out and buy that puppy as soon as it goes gold. Keep up the good work loki, you've got my support 110%!
As I understand it, Loki got the working binaries for quake ]|[, bundeled them with the install software (the install software was most definatly Loki) and then put them on the cd.
I can answer that. Or at least partially answer that. I can't speak for Loki but Never Winter Nights is a MMRPG that is being developed by Black Isle. Talk a look.. it's very, very, very, very, cool (D&D third edition rules).
How will XFree 4.0 affect how loki ports games? Is it going to make things easier? Harder? I know you have problems with being compatible with the different video card types and GlideX.X or Mesa3.X but you have done a really great job so far (I own quake ]|[, heretic ][, and Homm ]|[).
Did you steal my memories or something.... I suppose a bunch of people did that, but still kind of spooky. I completly understand what you're going through man. Me too...
True.. firewire isn't currently the norm, but there are more things that are supporting firewire, it's just another step to becoming standard.
I'm aware of the compatability issues with getting windows games over to linux. As a former windows gamer I know what it is to forsake some really good games (baldurs gate, planescape torment, diablo, starcraft, etc.). But I can look past that and into the future. What XFree 4.0 does for us is create a better standard to write NEW games for. As for wine, maybe someday (when it no longer matters), it will be able to emulate anything and everything in winodows, but I could care less about emulating windows, that's what I was trying to get away from in the first place. I don't care about emulating windows games, I care about playing Linux games.
Those are the big ones tho. With the addon of USB and Firewire support in the 2.4 Kernel it is a big addition to the general user market. Also the new/dev filesystem is going to be a big improvement.
As for XFree86 4.0 I agree, it's not all that much of an improvement for the general user, except for those general users who are gamers (i am so I'm kind of biased) for which it will be most useful. I can name a dozen people who will switch once they can play some 3d games.
Uuugh.. I cannot wait for MS office to go away. There is nothing I hate worse that HAVING to upgrade becuause documents from one release wont work on earlier ones, just so that the company can keep other companies from being able to read the fscking files with THEIR office suites.
Gnome is far more flexible than KDE is currently. With gnome you have a far more amount of customization and apps (applets, epplets, the like) and has better (i believe, just an opinion here folks) administration tools. KDE is a winclone desktop although they are working away from that. I'm looking forward to KDE 2.0. But as far as administration goes Gnome is far more convienent and useful.
I love Gnome myself, but I see a lot of good things about KDE (which unfortunatly (or fortunatly) is just a win32 clonetop). I don't see anyreason to get rid of either or make one more used than the other. I often switch between the two. Sometimes in a matter of minutes. I would like to be able to switch between the two of them without having to restart x (or in the case of kdm, log back in). I hope we never see the last of either of them, and I hope we see more of something new. Just my two cents.
Forgive me if someone already posted something along these lines but I feel that this little point has been understated in any case. Open source software was put out there so that CUSTOMERS who were unhappy with the software that they were given could do something about it. Opening up the source on hardware would only help out the VENDORS. The whole idea of open source is so that people can affect what they don't like, or just want to improve upon. This would not be the case for Transmeta. All that opening the source would do would be putting Transmeta out of buisness. I don't personally know many people who have access to the material to make use of that information. Don't flip people, just think about it for a couple of seconds, which is a couple of seconds more than poor ol Bob did.

It's not ready for the desktop... of a win32 user. But give it another couple of months. All we really need is the following:
2.4 Kernel
XFree86 4.0
Easel (Gnome 2.0) or KDE 2.0 (or both)
..After that I think that Linux will really start to take off in the average users home.
