Realtime processing, AFAIK, be it audio or video, is astonishingly processer-intensive. It doesn't surprise me that DSPs are being used for this reason: they may be the only thing that can cut it in a cost-effective manner.
i.e. you may be able to build a high-end workstation, and write some real-time software to handle this task, but since it probably wouldn't be able to do anything else at the same time doesn't that qualify as a hardware solution?
Perhaps instead of going to extreme lengths to remove echos, perhaps you just need to work harder to prevent them in the first place? Pro audio mags have tons of ways to reduce echo and other unwanted effects in small (usually home) studios. Have you looked into this?
And I'll try not to lone-gunman-are-dead the review,
The lone gunmen are dead?? Don't you know that here in the island nation of Tonga, episodes of The X Files are released two weeks later than in the US? How dare you post spoilers on the front page!
I seem to remember PowerBook 3500C was known to catch fire. Not a bug, per se, but it could have killed somebody. I know I almost threw mine out the Window and that could have caused serious damage.
I know a lot of people who threw out Windows when they got their Macs...
Cool idea, but from what I've read, the transfer rates on bluetooth are pretty poor (less than USB). Is this correct?
The cool thing about the iPod (aside from iTunes) is the firewire port: you would still want to plug in to upload music, especially of any quantity. This is one reason why USB-based MP3 hd players suck so hard: transferring more than 100mb of data over USB is incredibly tedious.
...but I agree with Amazon on this one. This is such a throwaway culture, it really pleases me that reselling used books has become a real, mass-market movement. Until recently, you were pretty much screwed if you lived in an area where you didn't have any good used book stores.
...and frankly, if you're just in it for the money, you probably shouldn't be a writer. It's just not a good way to get rich.
reduce, reuse, recycle: even on just an enviromental basis, isn't reselling books the best of ideas? How many trees have been saved because people bought used books?
With System 7 there was included a stripped-down version of Hypercard for running stacked-based help files, etc.
There was a well-known backdoor where you could open a script window and type "magic" or somesuch word and the stripped-down version would become functionally identical to the $149 or whatever retail version, without documentation of course.
I pointed this out at a Mac user group meeting where there were a few Apple reps present. A couple days later, I received a harassing phone call from Apple legal.
I thought this was ludricous, to say the least. (I read the tip in MacUser, for God's sake)
I would just -love- to be able to adjust the ratings of the movies I watch...
- mod "Dark Crystal", for example, to XXX for wild puppet sex.
- adjust "Return of the Dragon" to see if the homo-erotic undertones between Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris are ever resolved.
- Find out what -really- happened in the car in "Titanic": "No, really. It's ok. It happens to every guy, sooner or later... On a different subject, I don't suppose you have any fresh d-cell batteries around, do you?"
- Is ET's finger the only thing that glows?
- Discover the other advantage of being made out of liquid metal in "T2: Judgement Day"

In my country, government tells us what computer is best, here anyone can decide for himself or hisself!!!
Let us determine now, in a free and democratic fashion, if it is Macs or Wintel machines which are best for everyone. Let us not cease our open and candid discussion until we all agree. For many years I wonder about the answer to this question, now we shall all know, once and for all!!!
God Bless America!!! I love this country!!!
It's not too far and wouldn't be as much of a culture shock.
Wait, have you ever tasted Canadian food?
D'oh, that's a lame question. No one's ever tasted Canadian food. That's the problem.
Gravy over french fries. *shudder*

What, is it waterproof to 20k leagues? Does it have PING built into the instruction set?
Just wondering...
