Dyson (of the uk) have had a vacuuming robot for a while now, and it uses supersonic air cyclones rather than bags to separate dust and air so that no suction is lost as the thing sucks up more dust..
For those interested check out the UKs main contender for the x-prize here the general opinion seems to be that steve bennett actually tries to shoot himself up into space on the top of one of his rockets it'll be the last we hear from him...
Could it be that freedom is a noun while free is an adjective?
It could well be that, I dont see a problem with it being a noun, We can have "Freedom Fries", so why not "Freedom Software" heh heh.
But it isn't for the sake of credit he wants GNU to be mentioned, it is to remind people of the free software ideals Linux alone does not represent
Has he said that? from what I remember him saying, it was exactly the opposite of what you have said there, atleast when he first started with this way back the arguement of "educating users" has grown really, the FAQs and statements on the gnu webpages mention credits now and again.
I think its a bit of both, I agree mostly with his arguments, but as I said earlier, I think its just too late to change.
English has different words for "freedom" and "free" too.. "freedom" and "free" why they decided to use the moniker "free" in FSF instead of Freedom is anyones guess really.
The whole GNU/Linux debate is getting tiresome, it reminds me of socialist parties in Europe who war for years over the name of a party, it tends to ruin their credibility amongst the electorate. Surely the most important thing is to have a name that is recoqnised and used by the masses. Sadly for RMS , "Linux" is now a household name, and you simply cannot retrofit household names. I realise that he and his group have provided the framework for the entire operating system that is GNU/Linux, i think there are enough mentions of "GNU" in the header files, man pages, about dialog boxes to show how embedded GNU is into Linux.
I really dont think that GNU/Linux is going to come into every day use, but i think the history books will look nicely upon RMS.
The next step is an automatic vacuum cleaner, Bright said.
But the thing is, (and i made a submission to slashdot about a year ago) dyson (a uk brilliant inventor and industrialist) created and already sells a robotic vacuum cleaner..
Also, its impossible - not only pratically but theoretically.
Lets say, you did manage to create such a computer, if the computer was simulating the universe up till the present moment, it would have to including the processing performed by itself (turing universal machine anyone?) therefore requiring an exact replication of itself + the known universe calculations which would mean more bits, which would mean requirement for more bits and so on and so forth.
I think there is something to this varying constant idea. Infact there are some facts about the universe that simply do not tie up with a constant c. Joao magueijo of imperial college has written are interesting papers looking at the implications of this here

A friend of mine worked on the spec for this.. quite a nice little gadget, now just gotta get the thought controls working and we'll have firefox sorted!
I actually posted about this 4 days ago on slashdot.. I don't think that this is a cynical move by Philips but a genuine attempt to protect their name, and their products. Of course there will be spin offs - hardware sales (and kudos). There could be some red faces at certain record companies when people start to return copy protected CDs bearing the CD logo as defective products (which they are).
Its bad enough that record companies charge a high price for music CDs (making unecessarily high profits). But preventing us from making personal backup copies of CDs is alienating us , the consumer, that should have the right to something worth more than the raw materials of a CD (worth a couple of cents) , and the right for us to store the music we have PAID for in any more time enduring format we please.
All the best..

I heard recently that Philips are planning on defending the CD standard (owned with Sony). Copy protected CD's dont meet the red book standard therfore cannot employ the CD logo.
This is going to hot things up somewhat.

Listen Mr Positive thinking Belgian,
We've had to save your butts from the Germans two times already WWI, and WWII. No doubt we are going to end up sacrificing our nation to do it again. I've been to Belgium, I've seen the graveyards full of millions of British dead. Can you not understand our inherent distrust of anything that seems to be formulated and driven by Germany (by your own admission).
Please learn how to spell the name of our country before flaming us , it's spelt 'Britain'.
Britain has the fourth largest economy in the WORLD. I think that counts for something doesn't it. We weren't talking about expressing the size of an economy in growth, but in SIZE.
Lets just see what happens with this Euro before we say more on the matter.
For your information, the people of the UK have had no opportunity to vote on adopting the Euro, and it is not something that has ever clearly been given a mandate or no, by the uk populous..

They are closely related when it comes to whether this thing will be successful. In the UK atleast.
And that was the point of my post.
I think that 'IT' will fail for the same safety reasons. Anything with two wheels is illegal on the pavement in the UK therefore 'IT' will be forced onto the road.
You arent going to catch me on the road on one of those things , just as i wouldnt have used a C5 on a road in britain.
I think the failures of the past have alot to do with the mistakes of today, I think that even though 'IT' is a reasonably good design (as an ELECTRIC PERSONAL TRANSPORT) it still wont force people en mass to cleaner forms of transport.
Hope that helps

Hello,
You may or may not be aware that this 'personal electric vehicle' idea has been carried out before. It caused the loss of a great computer company in the UK (Sinclair , remember them, the Spectrum, QL etc). This was back in 1985
Sir Clive came up with an invention way ahead of its time, called the C5.
It was an outstanding failure, mainly due to safety concerns on busy roads. It caused the downfall of Sinclair and massive personal debts to Sir Clive (brilliant man)
Prepare to be underwhelmed. Strange how these things go in cycles.
..that code red I wasnt written along the lines of code red II. There would be alot more unpatched websites out there with super user wide open.. I think this hints that code red I and code red II are written by different people.
Anyone willing to setup a free vote of/.'ers favourite games of *all* time.. It would be interesting to see what came out top (nethack i'd guess:PP)
If I had my own server with enough bandwidth i'd do it myself:)
(That link to the list in the original article appears to be broken for me.. )
Ok - So this time it appears to be due to a server problem (Doesn't surprise me). Your right, I stopped bothering with Diablo II (including reading any forums) a long time ago due to widespread cheating. Although I did hear from a friend that there are still ways to cheat with items.
Also please note my use of the word 'Probably' in my post. 'Probably' means that I am not making a statement of fact, but mearly a judgement based on my prior experiences..

Infact I wasn't aware there is an outside of the universe, unless your stating that other universes exist (multiverses).
