    That sounds like a really bad idea. That way, the only news will be about the incumbent doing newsworthy things in the course of their duties.
    An unethical, conniving, underhanded pol would be declaring two terror alerts every single day of the week and twice on Sunday.

    Just for the SHEER purpose of antagonizing them, though, a lot of people seem to be jumping on with Bush. I find that extremely entertaining, and this November when he wins again, I cannot wait to hear the world reaction so I can wallow in their anger and hatred and moans, all of which is nothing more than a big, entertaining joke to me.

    I don't think you understand the significance of this poll. Nearly all of our allies are democracies. The leaders of these democracies cannot afford to be seen supporting Bush in any substantive way. We're going to need help running terrorists to ground and we are far less likely to get it with Bush in the White House. His arrogant, go-it-alone policies have made us MUCH less safe than we used to be. In this regard, there is no one who would not make a better President.

    If they're trying to build their own browser, why would they want IE developers? If it were my business, I'd want guys who had developed a product that had to stand on its own merit to succeed. Building a product that is successful largely because of an illegal monopoly is less than impressive.

    I have just the opposite opinion. Interpreting a line (or multiple lines) with method calls is no more or less difficult than interpreting lines with overloaded operators. I think the OP has the opposite opinion and I was trying to understand why they felt that way.

    Even for simple case such as yours, I'd avoid trying to pack it all on one line. Misplaced parentheses are easy mistakes to make and extemely difficult to debug.

    The problem is that we do a lot of numerical computing and Java has no operator overloading!

    I'm not following how operator overloading solves your problem. For example, how is this:
    a = a + b;
    an improvement over:
    a.add(b);

    As someone who learnt Linux at home, then took some classes, then became an instructor, I think most people who learn from home's knowledge holes are gaping.

    I learned at home. I know some of the "basic stuiff" you mentioned but if I were to do anything, I'd want to do a little research to cover those gaping holes. The thing is, I don't see how not knowing those things constitutes "gaping" holes.

    Do you honestly think safety will be put above financial considerations?
    Typical scenario: Major facility upgrades are due but $UTILITY's stock price has tanked lately due to underperforming analyst expectations. Will the upgrades happen? Or will they be postponed to make the quarterly numbers look good?
    Oh, I know.. the government will make them perform the upgrades because the government agencies are well-funded, with plenty of inspectors and not swayed by demads from large corporate campagn contributors.

    While this may be modded as funny, it seems more insightful to me. I'm one of those who just hate Real. They sell email addresses to spammers, they're install screws up the desktop and puts icons trying to sell me things all over the place. Let's not forget the incidents of them trying to install spyware. I'll be one person who'd be happy to see them crash and burn.,

    Looks who's filing the lawsuit. The plaintifs are Jim March and Bev Harris... activists, not gov't officials. In fact, the lawsuit has been sealed for at least 7 months while the government tried to decide if they wanted to join the plaintifs.

    ... and now for the big money round, answer this question:
    Which party wants to drastically curtail the ability of trial lawyers and the public to file lawsuits for damages?

    Because the Union of Concerned Scientists is right up there with the Clown College in my book.

    Admission standards to Clown College are a bit higher than I would have thought:

    "62 preeminent scientists including Nobel laureates, National Medal of Science recipients, former senior advisers to administrations of both parties, numerous members of the National Academy of Sciences, and other well-known researchers..."

    I don't follow your point. Are only christians allowed to comment on scientific abuse? Or are Wiccans assumed to be anti-science?

    Now explain this? It's got boatloads more functionality (find as you type, tabbed browsing, popup blocker, livemarks [0.9+], etc etc.)... but it 'doesn't include many functions'.

    PC Magazine is really just a Windows mouthpiece. They have to pull their punches. You didn't think they'd put all that Microsoft ad revenue at risk did you?

    I feel the one of the strongest features of Java (or any language) is a standardized documentation feature (i.e. javadoc) and "readability". Being able to easily understand what another developer's intentions and "gotchas" are is invaluable. Perl, for example, can be obtuse without even trying very hard.

    .. and now, 50 rebuttals from the Perl crowd.
