    Yes, but photos aren't protected from fire, flood or other natural disasters. The point of the article was to make a system that was at least as good at long-term archiving as print photos.

    While a nuclear accident would be catastrophic, it's technologically possible to run a safe nuclear reactor. The problem is that a safe reactor requires careful design, continuous monitoring, preventive maintenance and strict procedures. A corporation slaving to meet its quarterly profit expectations will be unable to meet this criteria. A government wholly owned and operated by such corporations will not be enforcing standards either.

    If you are trying to argue that my health care bill will go down if we just get rid of all those "frivolous" lawsuits, you should be modded funny.
    I can see it now:
    Big Hospital Corporation: We don't have ot hire as many lawyers, should we lower our prices or just pocket the extra profits? Hmmm, I just can't decide.

    P.S. Who gets to decide which lawsuits are frivolous? I bet the woman who had the wrong leg amputated would have a different definition than George W. Bush.

    I know I'll get flamed by the radical right-wing for this, but life ain't all about money. I make a decent living and I don't mind at all having a few bucks taken out of my check for roads, schools, doctor visits for the kiddies, etc. Maybe if I felt entitled to some shiny, spinning hubcaps for my SUV I'd feel different, but I'm happy to chip in a few bucks to help out those less fortunate.

    11,000 feet under Antarctica is a lake. This really fascinates me as it is one of the most alien environments on Earth. It is so low in nutrients that life would have to find alternative sources of energy.

    While it is true that the US is is still the leader in technological developments, there are some trends that make it a distinct possibility that this will not be the case for much longer.
    The dual trends of cutting school budgets and funding only scientific projects that are 'christian-approved", can quickly destroy the academic infrastructure that got us the lead in the first place. Americans are NOT genetically more intelligent than other people.

    I'd be interested to know what the thiniking was that made teachers switch from Pascal to $PEDAGOGICAL_LANGUAGE.
    After all, the important thing to a freshman class is to understand what's happening in a loop, or a sort block or whatever. That fundamental stuff never changes so why change the language you teach it with???

    Given the divisiveness George Bush and the Republican party has fostered over the past few years, I can't say I'm surprised at the level of viciousness being seen in this election. I'm just glad Americans are generally civilized enough that it's not worse.

    Setting up a linux box to host email is asked to be used as a relay.

    No, it really isn't. I've been hosting email for a handful of domains for a few years now. No relaying, no intrusions, no problems. Spam filtering is done with a few RBLs and relaying is prohibited.

    I was assigned to do pair programming with a more senior person. I got so tired of my suggestions being ignored (not disagreed with, ignored), that I just gave up and sat and watched him. The project had long since morphed into a Death March so this was just one more reason to loathe going into work each day.
    If I ever get forced into another pair programming situation, I'll use my spare time to apply for other jobs.

    Depends on your definition of "IT folks". If you mean shareholders and senior management of technology-related companies, then anyone in their wholly-owned subsidiary known as the US Congress is good for IT folks.
    If, on the other hand, you mean people who work for a living, I can't think of a single person who supports us.
