Yes it was, but only to a certain extent. Tanenbaum is famous for not liking the monolithic nature of the Linux kernel. Linus was certainly 'standing on the shoulders of giants' when he started writing Linux.
I read it before it got put up on here. So do you now agree that Linus in fact did write Linux, given everyone involved says he did? Or do you want to have a random conversation via Slashdot comments?
No, I'm just being precise. How can you mistake logic for emotion? Ad hominem is the resort of someone who hasn't got the balls to admit they're wrong, right?:-)
Poor old Ken Brown must be wondering how wise it was to have made that particular trip now! Curious that someone would spend all that cash and yet have done so little research. Smells of hidden agendas, or no-so-hidden agendas perhaps? The best part has to be: "But the code was his. The proof of this is that he messed the design up.":-)
No he did not. Linus did not use any Minix code. Not one line. If you think he did then please cite the code lines he took. Or just admit you don't know very much.
What makes you think I haven't? You're pretty selective about what constitutes 'intelligence' aren't you? It appears to be hearing about the right kind of people rather than anything more abstractsuch as the ability to draw reasonable inferences from a wide range of sources, of which this interview would be just one, while taking into account the context of each source.
How can reading their literature, listening to their music or learning their history teach you about how they use technology? Exactly what literature did you have in mind? The Egyptian edition of 'Wired'?
Not true. Let me explain a bit better. The Queen is the British Head of State. She is nothing at all to do with the Government. The Government is led by Tony Blair as Prime Minister. The State is the machinery and apparatus of government, but it is not the Government. Note the use of capitals. The BBC is a State-owned broadcaster and its direction is not influenced by the Government. Its independence is meant to be guaranteed by the board of governors.
They are most certainly NOT a government body! The BBC is a state-owned broadcaster. This is different to being a government body as they have no remit to serve the government or do what they say. The governors are supposed to be the independent overseeing body.
As Australia is generally more towards the equator than the US I'd guess that it was a better bet for solar power given better year-round weather. You know it is winter when you need to wear a jumper.:-) You can't be far wrong about the horrible start up costs though. I believbe there is a.au government-backed scheme to give money to homeowners who want to do this.
I only replied to it becaue I was so incensed about the other articles on the website that held the original article. Franly I don't give two hoots if they want to repeat it. I've got plenty of karma to burn but I don't intend to abuse mod points.
Why reprint? Except to save us absent-mindedly clicking onto the pile of shit that is "Britain's Culture War" written by someone who wouldn't understand British culture if it bit him. Which it obviously hasn't yet.
That's no excuse.

MINIX is licensed under the BSD licence, as mentioned in the article.
And there are no well-respected programmers who would agree with that point of view then?
Poor old Ken Brown must be wondering how wise it was to have made that particular trip now! :-)

Haha. And whose idea was the curvature of space-time in General Relativity?
Of course Linus wrote Linux, but don't let the facts get in your way!

Sure it has. Like this article! ;-)

The Egyptian edition of 'Wired'?
It's cheating, I know...
Well the article says it began in the late 80s so maybe someone told them....?
OK you're right and I'm wrong!
UK Online says I'm wrong so I'll go back under my rock...

Given that spammers break the law so readily can this be anything other than another aspect of the law that they ignore?

There are people in Australia who get money from the electricity people through their solar panels feeding back into the grid too.
When I get some mod points I will see what I can do...

What rights do you think you have as a consumer...?
I think you have confused 'terrorist' and 'illusionist'...
