FACT Apples have always been about the same OR BETTER priced compared to equal PC's Exactly. I once wanted to order a HDD which failed. I opened up the case and have seen an ordinary Hitachi 250GB drive with SATA. Apple wanted about 3 times the price, because they say they "test them very thoroughly and this is not such crap that other PC customers get". Yeah right... do I look that naive? As if they got special HDDs with blessings from Buddha personally.
FACT Apple has always been at the top of the list for quality and customer service Exactly. I waited 2 weeks for the HDD replacement in my Xserve RAID system. This was an expensive "applecare" contract. This contract said, someone would come and replace the drive. Instead the HDD was shipped. They also wanted the failed disk back.
FACT one of the reasons Apple is doing so well right now is Redmond fanboys are buying Macs to run Vista on...even the PC mags agree that MacBooks are the best windows machines out there. No. People buy Macs, because they feel somehow better. They want to have a moment of pride. Well, after short time, all the attention to the Mac is over, because everyone has to do their fucking work. Now, as you mention it. There are 2 colleagues here that have Macbooks Pro. So what? They still use MS-Windows XP on them.
I have a simple FreeBSD notebook here and can do my work without MS-Windows.
FACT sub $1000 PCs are crap..thats why most people that go to Dell's site to buy one of those $500 PCs leave spending around $1500 Who the hell buys complete PCs? I recently upgraded my old PC for just $300. It is over twice as fast as my last PC. And btw, I can construct an entire PC, part by part, and it runs without any problems for just $200 more. And it has a very decent quality, it is not comparable with any PC that companies like Dell sell (I have not single no-name component). Go and buy 1GB RAM more in Apple shop. They charge you about 10x as much. My PC parts are carefully chosen. They are not crap at all. I simply choose good quality prodcuts and try to find out which have a decent price at the moment according to their speed and power requirements. You won't have this choice with Apples.
The title is bad. Read the text and you will notice that they claim that "Teaching Java, as the only language, is damaging." and that might be true. I have the opinion for years now and I teach Java to students during this semester. There is far more than only Java and you can only get better the more languages you know.
By the way, C (yes, the one without "++") is still my favorite language.
This does not make it more acceptable. Next time they want a scan of some other private parts of your body.
Databases everywhere. And who takes care of the security implied in holding such sensitive data? I'm waiting patiently until some cracker gets into the US flight DB and then all the credit card data is stolen. I also don't like criminals to have access to my fingerprint data that is used for conviction somewhere.
Is this difficult to understand that this is wrong?
Of course you can take my BSD-license code and do what you want. But you cannot remove my license! Read the rules... These are not many, but READ THEM for God's sake! It's clearly written that you CANNOT REMOVE THE BSDL. You CANNOT REMOVE MY NAME from the license, if I put it inside.
Simply READ IT. The same is expected to people that have to bow to GPL. Or should I begin to ignore the GPL, too?
This is really what we need. So that commercial product can be easily installed.
You cannot seriously replace something like emerge by apt or RPM. Not only me would be annoyed, but everyone in this world.
I don't believe it is difficult to make a simple installer/deinstaller like MS-Windows has. One problem might be the toolkit, but developers have often made a 2-layer design that abstracts the GUI from command-line utils. This is a principle that I like. This way you can have your Gtk+ or Qt ontop of the real application.
I would also suggest a more intelligent installer that is focused on games. It should analyse hardware/software prerequisites with simple mechanisms (e.g. a simple configuration file) and have an interface that forwards performance settings to the installed application (come on, we have procfs!). Also rating (age, violence or nudity should be indicated by simple symbols) and so on.
First I want to mention that I consider games as art. Many people put much effort into the production process with graphics, sound and gameplay. Each game is individual (has its special character).
I am German and I won't buy any games in Germany that were originally produced for adult gamers. Why? Because they all have been changed until "child-safe". Wtf should I do with such a game?
I give you one example... one of the worst things I've ever seen. Remember the game Commandos? Sometimes when you want to silently kill a soldier you have to take him on your back and pull him somewhere where you can hide the corpse. What did Germany do with this game, you ask? Well, when you kill the soldier he instanty becames a grave with a tombstone. Well you can imagine how idiotic it is to see someone carry a grave around.
Then there are "war glorifying games", like Commando (not Commandos!). It's one of the first games that have been restricted here. What the hell is war-glorifying in this simple shooter with 8x8 pixel sprites?
They are INSANE here in Germany. I warn you not to care about selling games here, because it is expensive to alter graphics and sound to make it "Germany-compatible". Forget it simply. Adults will buy games in foreign countries and hope that the expensive art pieces won't be discovered by the customs.
And to the games industry: please don't alter games. Don't release them here, if you can't. We gamers are adults and can use our credit cards, if we really like something.
The complaints about there not being many Dvorak keyboards for sale are just silly.
Yes. I agree on this. Imagine your PC boots incorrectly and you don't have the layout installed (for example linux boot prompt). I had lots of "fun" with this after I arranged my keys to Dvorak order on my old keyboard.
I have learned Dvorak (German layout) and I use it when I'm typing longer in german language. It has advantages, because I don't need to look at the keys. On my keyboard is simply QWERTZ. My keyboard is also too expensive. I would not rip the keys out anymore here.
I'm not using Dvorak layout for programming and for other tasks, because programming with a German keyboard (Dvorak or QUERTZ) is totally annoying. All the important keys ()[]{}/$"| are difficult to type because they need "Shift" or "AltGr". I would use a German Dvorak with mods for programming. I have to think about it. While I don't use Dvorak, I have to look at the keys, of course and I use 2 fingers each hand (plus right thumb for space).
I don't understand the argument that switching between two layouts is difficult. There is only one problem. Keys "." and "," are really easy to reach on German Dvorak and it might annoy you a bit while typing on QWERTZ because sometimes it might happen that you press them. There is no way that you mix something up on Dvorak, because Dvorak is simply better.
On to the people who say "it's difficult to switch layouts on a PC"... make a script that swaps the layouts and put it on an icon in your panel. Or, if you work at a terminal use 2 scripts that switch betweeen layouts. The names of the script should by typed by same keys, so you don't need to think about it. I use "asdf" and "aoei" for example.
Dvorak is language and (even worse!) application specific. You can have many Dvoraks. Think thoroughly before using one. I think that typing long texts in German on QWERTZ is annoying, so I use German Dvorak for it. While programming, I still need more to think than type. I can accept both layouts on Vim (they make no difference). English layouts have also a "Programmer's Dvorak" that would be an advantage. I guess, this is what the 7 of 9 programmers used. It's application specific and it's ok, too, if you mainly type programs.
Take a look at the specs of your TV/VCR, I bet they consume 5-15W while on standby.
How much do you think your ATX tower consumes? It is a fat 5-7W when "turned off". AT towers have been perfect. They had a mechanical switch and there was no "standby mode". My ATX tower has an external switch to be sure it's really off (my definition of "off" is 0W).
Hi people,
I'd like to replace sendmail, but I need a certain feature called "smarttable". With this configuration I can send my mail through a single MTA and forward it automatically to the proper SMTP servers according to the envelope address. I have a few SMTP servers that only accept mails that have been sent from the correct email address.
Noone could answer how to do this with other MTAs. Any suggestions to solve my problem?
Go on and post your WinXP license key. We are going to see how much it'll cost you.
When you copy your licensed software, you have got still one license.
Well look at the Flash license for FreeBSD. It is not safe to use. You don't get support. I don't like Adobe either. Who said, it is safe to use? Not mentioning the quality of that what their produce (some people might call it software by accident).
*You* do, if you have not gone through and analyzed every last line of code in every file in your kernel and userland source, and all your applications too.
Don't forget that there is more people than only me who actually take a look at the code. When they are properly signed the risk is minimized drastically.
Of course, experienced users sometimes want to play with kernel settings. That's ok. I doubt that desktop users will/want to do that.
Flash is not default on any OS, either. You have to install it manually. That's also a kind of black magic, at least for me. Do you trust that the Flash plugin is safe to use? This is a very critical aspect. Who installs software before knowing what it does? I don't install strange things, because many of them are spyware. Can you know for sure what's inside the plugin?
Some of them -- stupidly -- require Flash for navigation.
Most pages use simple HTML for navigation. Anything else is terrible for accessibility. I don't have Flash, even on my MS-Windows installations. I don't like blinking/moving stuff while browsing webpages.
For IPSEC support?
Yea, that's a bug, in my opinion.
For performance?
Wow... how much performance did you get?
To enable debugging?
kernel.debug is inside/usr/obj and debugging is enabled by default.
The problem with ALSA is the letter L. It stands "Linux" and is a different approach of solving things.
FreeBSD can be used for low quality, high latency consumer level audio - nothing more.
The sound support has been improved recently. Now I can get sound even when my PC is on high load. I'm not sure if Linux handles high loads better than FreeBSD. This is mainly the reason why I switched to FreeBSD. I prefer my mouse cursor to react when I'm doing my work. That was never possible on Linux or MS-Windows and is very bad for desktop usage.
Linux does this via ALSA, but FBSD has no similar, new audio architecture to replace OSS (as ALSA finally has). KDE's artsd + artsdsp is available, but we all know that the entire arts package sucks horribly.
Many people seem to miss ALSA. Whatever it is. When I look into/dev, I can see many different/dev/dsp0.x devices. Whatever you want to do, you can use all these channels from an application.
Have better Java and Flash support.
Where are the problems with Java, except it cannot be distributed as a package? Flash? Who the hell needs it and why is it essential for a desktop?
Make compiling the kernel easier.
Since when you need to compile a kernel? You think a desktop user wants to do this? I'm using FreeBSD since a few years on my desktop and I'm still using GENERIC (the default kernel configuration). I expect to load my features by using KLD. That's enough.
I have a simple FreeBSD notebook here and can do my work without MS-Windows. And "someone" finally discovered reals while playing around with triangles.
Come on, this is wheat. Who cares about that in Asia? People eat rice 3x a day there.
And we are telling you again that reasonable operating systems use UTC.
- I can leave my notes on my desk. Nobody can read it.
- It actually is useful (can write faster).
- Shorthand looks very nice. Your handwriting style gets better.
What is the alternative? Learn Klingon? Yeah, go on, waste your time. The title is bad. Read the text and you will notice that they claim that "Teaching Java, as the only language, is damaging." and that might be true. What has gambling to do with copyright?
Wouldn't it be a better idea to let them choose to kill one US-citizen for free?
This does not make it more acceptable. Next time they want a scan of some other private parts of your body.

Changing games is vandalism. Don't treat adults like children. Greetings from Germany!

None is affected.
I wonder how Nokia comes to the conclusion that "46 millions batteries" is "very rare" (quoted from the advisory).

Only some stupid politicians!

Nintendo has always cared about the quality and power consumption. Look at the recent values! Gamecube eats only 20W while XBox360 more than 160W.
