Unigraphics NX and its predecessors coupled with a decent 6 DOF device, 3D modeling is actually a breeze.
Relatively high barrier entry to hardware and software had always been the major handicap to 3D CAD/CAM. We're decades away from practical enthusiast level additive 3D prototyping.
