no, but it's not all that hard if you have half a clue.

there was a bug in the lp driver a while back. it's polling loop had a backoff algorithm that doubled the time it waited between polls, but it never lowered that time.

it emitted a log message that i could see in the syslog. a simple find + xargs + grep + syslog message got me within a few dozen lines of the bug. i wrote a patch and the problem was fixed - my printer went from 1 page a day to a few pages a minute.

sadly it would have been simpler to do google + syslog message: the bug had been found several months before.

in general though kernel programming isn't magical. it's just plain c at the end of the day. at least the vast majority of it is.

I'm currently developing a middleware project that takes a complex search pattern and applies it to a streams of delimited character objects and while our team of 40 software software engineers has yet to actually start developing we've produced a fantastic spec that will greatly simplify coding it.

I suspect we'll have this general regular expression parser up in running in less than 80 man years of effort thanks to our full and detailed specs.

now there are less biased documentaries, but anything of substance is going to be biased. regardless of what you whether you agree with him (and really, who thinks that's a good measure of quality?), michael moore makes documentaries that get people thinking and talking.

sadly too many people don't think very deeply so a lot of the talking is about stupid things - ie gossipy chatter about michael moore, insipid drivel about "objective" documentaries and calling it an "anti-gun" documentary.

happily some folks discuss the role of journalism and the media in society and what effects it has on society. and that in my mind is one of the great things to come from both bfc and f911.
