You gotta love America, "Tonight we break in to ancient burial sites LIVE!" Will it have musical performances? What about cheesy hosts who do mummy jokes every 5 mins.?
I use ICQ, AIM and MSN, i have friends on each who only use that system. It doesn't really cause a problem, i've tried jabber and trillian but i never got used to them. My main problem is implementation: often, if i use a non-official client to tie things together, there are missing features. One of my friends uses jabber and a gateway, they appear on my ICQ list but there are problems, sometimes they appear offline when they're not, and visa versa. I like to have the official clients installed so i know that im getting the same as everyone else, no missing profiles, or profiles with the ends clipped off, no online errors, no lost messages etc. I have 3 clients running on windows, even MSN isnt that resource hungry:) so i just live with it.
Yes, IM is very messy, unlike email there is just no standard protocol that fits the bill (irc? no).
You all might think that china is far behind civilization with their censorship of the internet/free speech, but in fact you couldn't be further from the truth. They are actually years ahead of us all!
Just remember, in a few years time when DRM is mandatory and free speech is crippled by 'national security' and the need for everyone to be protected from alternative ideas, china will be leading the way in firewalls, and filters, and they'll be teaching _Cisco_ how to do it:)
Yes, thats why i suggested that it should be _clearly_ marked/advertised that it is _not_ yours, you cant control it, and that they can do things that you might not like. When i say clearly, i mean big fat clearly not 8pt. on the back page of some manual.
I'm assuming that you don't look foreign. If you looked like an Arab then you would certainly have had a more thorough search. People are racist, 1 week after sept.11th Arab people were being kicked off planes because someone didn't like the look of them. I find it appalling that people can claim to be fair and un-biased, but when put in a position of possible danger react with complete prejudice. I agree, security is a complete joke; you can get on a plane with a gun and a bomb if you are an average looking Joe. I think the next terrorists will get by, by completely blending in as an average family going on a ski-trip.:)
This is basically controlling what your devices, in your own home do. Just like DVD players deciding that you cant fast-forward and just like DRM. Who cares if they just want to show you adverts that interest you, the principle is that you want full control over your things. So, unless they put set-up programs into these products that allow the user _full_ control to turn any thing on or off, then all these products - digital decoders, dvd players, set-top boxes etc are flawed.
We have other 'fair use' laws that grant us rights such as the ability to back-up for personal use, i think its about time we were given more legal rights to protect us from restrictions - such as full control over devices. If you're restricted in what you can do in any artificial way then that should be clearly advertised before you buy the product, eg.
"This DVD player adheres to the DVD standards. Only region X discs will play in this device, any DVDs bought from countries outside X will _not_ play in this device. This player may also disable the ability to 'fast-forward' and 're-wind' according to instructions coded on the disk. Due to the macrovision system, if your TV does not have SCART or composite inputs you may need additional equipment to use this player."
You cant really ban religion and still claim to have free speech. Although i agree, there is allot of complete bullshit going on around the world. The problem is you just cant go around killing all the stupid people to create an ultimate race.
But, you could give me your money so i can save your soul on the coming judgement day. I accept cash, cheques, credit/debit-cards and postal orders in all major currencies.. except Euro's
Oh, well, im sorry my crappy little island country had a few problems stopping the entire German army, we were too busy laughing our f*cking asses off at all the bombs that kept falling on our heads.
The people of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were not the enemy. civilians were not recognized as targets under any international laws, and despite all your bitching, your country remains the only one to ever use nuclear weapons in combat. Well, not only that, but your nuclear testing, along with Russia's has contributed one of the most damaging effects to the environment. And now your president wants to resume nuclear testing under the guise of "bunker-busting" weapons, and is set to break the test-ban when ever he feels like it.
I don't want to have to say this, but its all on our minds - your government is partially responsible September 11th through arrogance and incompetence, your airlines got away with the lowest security possible, and massive buildings were packed full of people to save money.
yes, i wonder how it felt for the quarter of a million people brutally murdered, burnt, blinded, and exposed to radiation in hiroshima and nagasaki. Especially the childeren, and the doctors and nurses, and the people in the forced-labour factories. Now that was a terrorist attack.
Yes, i also know what its like, at one point in my childhood, there was a bomb in london almost every week.
Not to mention the attacks in isreal and palestine every week.
The parent post started it, i was just making a valid point
"If we're going to get content on the 'Net, somehow we're going to have to reward the people who put it on there,"
What?? i cant even begin to start arguing with that statement at this time in the morning, theres just too much to type. ok (insert massive flame to the RIAA, MPAA etc. here, include mention of lame teeny-pop, bad movies, and the whole host of good things on the internet, like the osdn for one..)
Well firstly i've read one of those books, and secondly, yes, he probably was a nutcase, if you could plainly see that your ideas were the best, but people still kept on using the old ways, and few credited you for your work, you would loose a few screws too.
The ironic thing is, some commercial software actually costs that much! sometimes just for one license. Its amazing how much money people will pay if they think its going to work better (and if their company is writing the cheque:)
Yes, last time i used it, you couldn't _actually_ type numbers into some of these boxes!! setting the output dimensions in pixels was as frustrating as setting an alarm clock. Maybe i missed some magic key-combo or place to click, but i dont see why they couldnt just use the same widgets as everyone else..
I know this has been mentioned.. but Baird pretty much came up with the idea (maybe it was someone before, but certainly not Farnsworth) of transmitting moving pictures. The CRT was invented by 'some Russian/Ukrainian guy' as far as i know, and radio by several other people. He didn't really come-up with the idea of scan-lines, either, since Baird's system worked on that principle, although mechanically. So Farnsworth's job was really just sticking various different things together. While that's still a pretty big task, it's not as amazing as people credit him for.
Unfortunately, the only thing he is remembered for by most people is Red-Alert. Everyone remembers Edison though, even though he was far inferior to Tesla.
I wonder how the RIAA will handle 'IP protection' on quantum systems.. maybe that file _is_ britney spears.. or maybe its my accounts.. maybe britney doesnt exist.. we can only hope:) maybe its all in another universe.. who am i? whats going on waah why did i write all this?
"Last time i checked same happens to the good old fassioned floopy disk.."
no no, with a floppy disk you just have to stick it in your pocket, 9/10 it will corrupt. Thats why i'm sad enough to duplicate all my files on floppy's and sometimes use 2 different disks. Im sure you could probably duplicate the atomic memory too, it would still be amazing density even at half capacity, even at 1/10 capacity. They can decrease the duplication as the technology for better reliability increases.
Just as long as you don't arrange atoms in a way that could, using some sort of algorithm, produce a recording of some popular music. Otherwise, the RIAA's nano-bots, will deconstruct your atoms.. with permission of the US government
I dont understand, Why do they need permission from the US Government? America doesn't own the moon just because they have a flag sticking on it, and even thats unverified.
cant they just position some sort of beam afew mm below the drop, when it gets close to dripping point wont it slowy speed up as the stem stretches and gets weak? - the beam would be placed at the right point and lowered a bit every day so that when it breaks the beam you get an advanced warning in time to get out of bed and run down the road in your underwear so you could see it.
Or, you could use a zoomed in, high-res video camera connected to a computer that could analyse the the speed constantly and give out warnings as required.
"Federal Agent, I'm Armed!" - When Scully says that its just so hot!
And my all time fav.
"Ahhhhh, Clear! Clear! FBI! freeze! get down on the ground little boy! get down or I will open fire!" - When they took that kid, i cant remember where it was, but there was a great photo of someone pointing a semi-automatic at this boy - nicely done FBI - they teach you that at the acadamy?"
Yeah, just tell me.. what cool phrases are there? i need something that says "hey, you know, im important, and i carry a gun, and your criminal scum that needs to get down on the ground..."

Because americans will be having their pointless little drawn out ceremonies on the 11th. You cant mod this down without modding the parent down too.

Can you think of any program whose UI isn't confusing the first few times you try it?
VI??
no, hang on, i actually learnt to use vi, but i still cant figure out blender!!!! lol
i'll get there in the end..

Actually the police normally carry lame little sticks, but if someone has so much as a water pistol they break out the mp5's and kevlar :)
