I thought that after 9/11, americans decided that it was ok to be racist and not allow anyone who looked arab or wore the attire to get on a plane, with all the storys of pilots kicking off passengers who they didnt like the look of, it seems that planes have been filtered of terrorists already.
It seems to me that the September 11th hijackings were a result of gross incompetence by the respective authorities that are in charge of plane/airport security. No one can say that they couldn't have predicted it, hi-jackings have happened before, suicide attacks have happened before, and even both together have been at least attempted before, maybe even successfully. Nothing was done to try and prevent this, but now, after its happened, and at a time when its becoming increasingly unlikely that it will happen again, they want to waste time and money looking into sci-fi, big brother security methods that no-one wants, and that don't work. I don't worry that i will be hit by a plane, or even that a plane im on will be hijacked, there are lots of things that are far more likely to happen - like getting run-over on the way to the airport, or being mugged. I don't appreciate anything they are trying to do, they are being paid to sit around pursuing dumb ideas that we all know aren't the solution. This is like Microsoft developing Palladium which is way over-the-top, just because they cant accept that all the security flaws/vbs virii in their products are their own fault.
Anyway, everyone knows that the only real way to make planes safe is to put a big sign at the gate "Danger! Hijacking this plane and flying it into buildings is dangerous and may result in injury and/or death":)
What does the bill say about foriegn piracy? will the RIAA be attacking systems that are outside of the USA? If American soldiers came over to another country and killed/kidnapped someone there would be hell to pay (ignoring Afganistan lol). Like wise, if the SAS went to America and did the same, there would also be hell to pay.
"To me, it's another example of the insane lengths the entertainment companies are willing to go to preserve their business models. They're willing to destroy your privacy, have general-purpose computers declared illegal, and exercise special vigilante police powers that no one else has...just to make sure that no one watches "The Little Mermaid" without paying for it. They're trying to invent a new crime: interference with a business model."
Thats got to be the best way i've heard it put so-far.
"Hey, thats a great idea Macromedia - you could provide a replacement to the VRML standard that is proprietorelly linked to your company.. with you producing the only viable authoring package you could rule the industry and make millions!! plus, everyone will need faster computers so the chip manufactures will be your friends so theres a potential for even more money. Even though its a binary format that goes against everything the W3C stands for, no-one will care because they are all lame art-student failures."
(the kid cant spell)
In the real world, its not about whats a good idea or not, its about how much crap you can sell to the stupid people, how much gimmicky, novel bullshit you can force them to accept so you can fill your pockets with money. If you can tie them into your product - great, if you can produce it cheaply and sell it expensive - even better. People dont _need_ these things, hell, you dont even need pretty graphics on a web-site, but people want them because they are shallow and because they want to be better than the other site with its flash and crap. Web sites should be easy to use, and accesable, but their not.
You might not think this is important since most people here build their own PCs anyway, but in the near future, if the governments of the world get their way, the PC will be a closed box that you, have to buy as a whole, it will matter if it comes with Windows or not.
Why am i replying? i dunno. Will you read it? probably not. Is it offtopic? Yeah..

and no, it's not some pathetic lay guide, yup, im afraid it is. Dont try to argue with me here, im right.
it's a pretty detailed, fairly scientific analysis of how attraction works -"Gimmick to get chick to kiss in a club" -"What to do when your chick catches you with another chick"
Yes, i can see its certainly not a lay-guide and it seems very scientific. Its detailed - i'll give you that...
and explaining the things that "don't make sense" regarding girls. They are people too like us. They arnt some weird species. We are all just as messed up, but some of us are pretty sexist.. like you.
Oh for gods sake we had VRML we dont need a stupid proprietry format from some corporation. I know VRML isnt exactly great but it can be updated to produce something pretty good, and open. Unfortunately in the real world no-one cares about VRML or SVG or anything, the basterds always win
Wouldnt it be much better to have a cloud-base that was held up by ribbons. Then you wouldnt have to have one long ribbon, but say break it down into 3 or 4 shorter, more manageable ones. at an already high altitude, planes could land on it and drop off the cargo to be lifted up and you could even make a TV show involving string puppets and jet-fighter babes. You'd be able to fit more lifts in that could be working at the same time.
I dunno how you could put it up there - either build it on the ground and then lift it, or build it in space and then lower it.
Why is this even in discussion, DVD is dead. It didnt live up to it, 8GB is just not enough. All the new technologies that can store 100's of GBs will win, unless the RIAA/MPAA decides that the engineers working on them should have some 'accidents'
Microsoft better be careful, or companies will start ganging up and selling machines with Linux which technically isnt a "no-OS" machine. If MS wants to start saying "no-Linux" then they can answer to the government for anti-trust.
Next the RIAA will restrict the sale of audio-playback devices. They will not allow any device to be able to play RIAA content unless the device is shipped with _every_ single RIAA produced song stored on a massive hard-drive in mp3 format. All mp3 players, cd-players, computers etc. will have to be shipped with this hard-drive, at a cost to the end user, even if they dont want to play RIAA content.
This kinda reminds me of the TV licensing system here in the UK. Everyone must pay a fee to be able to have TV(s) in their home, the fee goes to the BBC to pay for programming, even though there are other terrestrial channels which make money from advertising. In order to watch these channels you have to _pay_ for the BBC channels. This is ok, because its done by the government, not by a monopolistic corporation (the government _is_ a monopolistic corporation, all governments are).
This policy isn't even going cut piracy out, lots of people build their own computers, and unless microsoft thinks they can bully hard-drive manufacturers to include copies of windows on all their new hard drives at cost to the user, then they're gonna have problems.
Governments in the free-world countries were never going to censor the internet - someone like Bush wouldnt want that on his slate, it would be a public relations nightmare. So, the other option, start censoring the internet bit by bit, first its the illigal music, you can justify it because its piracy, (9/11 btw provided a great platform for censoring stuff, and for making laws that stop 'anti-american' practices like, say.. stealing other peoples land^H^H^H^H music). The first amendments already gone, so they dont have to worry about that anymore, which allows them to get on with stopping the whole thing
This is an OXFAM^H^H^H^H^H RIAA appeal, for the record companies of America. Every day, Music bosses loose millions of dollars. Dollars that feed their families, buy their yachts, and fuel their Learjets. Good people such as AOL-Time Warner and Disney, are doing their best to make a living for themselves, but they need your help.. Just $2 could help win a senator such as Fritz Hollings, just $2 could go towards the legal fees needed to bring down a pirate, and just $2 could press 100 music CDs or DVDs that could be sold off for $20 a piece. We need your help urgently, so, please send, just $2, or whatever you can afford...
Remember - give a man a lawyer, and he can run a company for a day. But give a man the money to bribe a senator, and he can change the law to run his company for years to come.
God-damnit this country sucks. You would think the government had more important things to do like.. oh i dont know the NHS?! but no, obviously Blair has time to suck Bushes dick and put laws in place so (and lets face it this is the real reason) American corporations can spread their seed and sue anyone who gets in their way. I'm blaiming America for this because its their fault:)
I can see next years riots - someone hacks the signs in Piccadilly Circus to show the DeCSS code, and i finally go... so i can smash up afew McDonalds.
You never know.. i could _actually_ vote Lib-Dems. thats if i actually bother voting this time...
The pilots' display looks more impressive than the passengers tv-screen (or lack of). I can imagine them saying "hey, we dont need those stupid engine guages, put Starwars on the center screen." or, if it was my plane "Sir, we're being hailed" - "On screen!"
i think the whole plane needs to be bigger before you can use it for an airline. Maybe say.. big enough for a toilet and more than 3 seats...
You could block this with a firewall, but then Sony could counter-attack by hiding the signal on the back of something else.. On the whole these companies are only telling us what they're doing in the small print which no-one reads. Most people I know haven't a clue about DRM or whats going on with it. Its (usually) perfectly legal to do what they are doing, and illigal to by-pass it. More of the general population needs to be aware of whats really going on, and that the corporations are shafting them behind their backs. Posting on/. is preaching to the converted. The internet is supposed to be the big medium for mass communication to enlighten the masses, but everyone is still in the dark..
Its sick that people havnt voted with their feet already. Now DRM systems are already in our homes.
I think there are lots of 'alternative' players from asia, that the MPAA is trying to stamp out (get one before they do). And what about building one yourself? all you need is an old computer that can handle it, i'm pretty sure the DRM is in the software not on the drive itself, so find a software player warez/open-source etc. that gives you the freedom.
I've been going on about this for years and no-one has listend, be careful when you buy a dvd-player, always check that it can play all regions, and that it can ignore DRM commands. If not, makesure it can be modded to do so.
No dude, it was sarcasm. it was almost copy&paste from 'Vaginas Break Hearts' and everyother e2 node:)
I like girls who are bitches, even though they ignore me/hurt me, or are just really stupid bimbos, i cant help but fall for them. I guess they have the same problem with guys.
What we need to do is round up all this bitch girls (cheerleaders) and all these asshole guys (jocks) and just stick them in some sort of mega-death-camp thingy... lol
