  1. Its the classic example on The Future of Digital Cinema · · Score: 1

SHHHHHH!!! for f*cks sake, don't let anyone find out that theres something better!

This is the philosophy behind almost everything - DVDs, Oparating Systems, Web-Standards, Music, Love. Its what allows people to be lazy and still get what they want. In the DVD industry for example, no-one as realised that there could be far better formats for the same or less cost, so DVDs are the major standard, everyone buys them. Ok, granted there are cost issues in upgrading a cinema, but why should the owners bother when they're on a nice little ledge.

  2. Point for Point on Video Game Advertising Reaches New Lows · · Score: 1

Are the advertising agencies on crack? or are the /. admins? probably both. Is this a fake? damn right.

    1. how many people visit a grave yard each day?
    2. how many of those people will actually _see_ the grave stone with the advert on it?
    3. out of those, how many will notice the advert, unless its very colourful and not just engraved in the stone? (I dont think they'd get away with that)
    4. out of the people that notice the advert how many will a) give a f*ck, b) actually play video games, c) not be pissed off enough at the capitalist marketing technique to buy it, d) will have already seen it possibly because its on their relatives gravestone, or e) will have seen it already on a bill-board on the way to the graveyard.

  3. dumness on House OKs Life Sentences For Hackers · · Score: 1

Can someone tell me just how a mouse can be as dangerous as a bullet or a bomb?? The only things i can think if are situations where someone had interfaced the controls to some thing important with a computer - i.e a life support machine, an air traffic control system, a gun mounted on a robotic platform aimed at a busy street, a bomb, a nuclear bomb, or some sort of switch that transmitted hear'says music on every tv and radio channel in the world. For this to be utilised by a hacker in a way that would make them responsible would require that the interface was then connected to a publicly accessable network system (eg, the internet). Since its a mouse were talking about, it would have to be done through some sort of graphical interface. Lets bring everything together here:

If i clicked a submit button on a form in a browser at a certain website that would activate an interface and do one of the things previously mentioned, i would be liable? WOULDNT THE STUPID IDIOT WHO SET THIS SYSTEM UP BE LIABLE?? lol

  4. Dumbness on Cameras in UK for Toll Enforcement · · Score: 1

Whats the point? everyone has to pay some kind of raod tax to drive a car - you dont have cameras all over the place scanning plates for that - you jut make everyone put a tax disc in the window! most lawabiding citizens wont try to get away without paying if they have to show a permit in their window. Lets look at the costs:

Installing 100's of cameras around london, connecting them to a central computer with the proccessing power to analyse 100's of number plates per second and compare them to a database - allot of f*cking money.

Issuing peices of paper and those little plastic sleave things to put them in - f*cking jack.

All this because the dumb politicians/mayors have no idea whats going on. They no nothing about the tecnology around, they no nothing about its cost, and they no nothing about designing a system to do a job - why not just hire people with a clue.

I don't know about you, but i often buy things based on specs, reviews, and other peoples experiences, not because the company had a sexy web site.

A slick site will grab more customers than a piece of bunk taped together with table tags.

A slick site _is_ a piece of bunk taped together with table tags :) or bloated flash, or dreamweaver/frontpage dodgy HTML. A good site uses CSS so it looks slick in CSS browsers, and looks like proper HTML in old browsers, (or the server generates different versions on the fly).

As for 1337 d00d's tribute to gothic teen angst...I couldn't care less what he's got to say. But if 1337 d00d can make his site resemble a piece of art, I just might stick around to read his latest diatribe on dumb jocks.

Man, 1337 d00d r0x! his tributes to gothic teen angst make me ROFL! Lots of sites are meant to be gimmicky art pieces, thats fine, they're fun to browse, but when i want to find some drivers or warranty information, or whatever, i want it quickly and without having to go through some dumb interface.

I feel violated when people suggest i should use tables for formatting.

Or, even better, why not just serve massive pirate sites from big ships in international waters using satellite :), or pay the ruler of some small 3rd world country to host it and keep it all safe :)?

  17. Dumb Terminal on Seiko TV Watch is now 20 years Old · · Score: 1

The idea of putting the main proccessing power (or tuner in this case) in a separate box is good. Technically, all the watch is is a screen, surely you could connect almost anything to it - a camera, a dvd player or even a computer. If you designed something like this with a touch screen, then you're set. I want to see a cheap, thin LCD touch screen (on a watch or in a star-trek style pad) with some kind of wireless system (bluetooth, infra red etc) or atleast a cable. You could then use it to access other devices while they're in your pocket or briefcase, such as your mp3 player, dvd player, laptop, camcorder or tv tuner. You could even use a wireless base-station. Basically it would be a dumb terminal, but a very cheap, tiny, and portable one. Obviously you'd need to sort out compatability between products, but it would make life so much easier.

On another note im interested to know how he managed to set the equipment for the full dynamic range - if he recorded it at the normal level, the samples on the cd would peak at a few percent or less! that would be a complete waste of data especially for the 16-bit depth. Although this level wouldn't allow him the end of the silence since normal wispering would just clip :)

My personal favorite is to fill in the email address as the domain your regestering on for example "webmaster@nytimes.com" or "support@nytimes.com". I figured early on that they would block these with filters, so then i started feeding each company an address from another company.

What really gets me is the verification systems. Obviously most of these programmers just left school and insist on varifying _every_ field. Who cares if my zip code is the wrong number of digits? since the only code i know is "90210" thats what im going to put if you ask me again!

I cant wait for the new Parabellum and SSSCA technologies to come out, then i can have my details burnt onto my motherboard and automatically sent to every site i vist. Also, it will be good news for the sites since i will have to have the correct information in by law, as it will be taken from my passport, and documents (required for purchasing a new machine in 2005) lol

If the sites really want my data so that it can help them tailor the site, then they should ask specific, impersonal questions and make it damn quick.

"Microsoft announced today, that they plan to take over PCs, literally. Their new project, code-named 'Scrotum' is aimed at designing a complete built-in control system for PCs. Scrotum will scan data that passes through the computers processor and look for special 'skid-marks'. These skid-marks will tell the system what can and can't be done with a certain piece of data. For example, someone may send you an email advertising a product. Scrotum will detect that this email is âbullshitâ(TM), from the skid-marks it finds in the data stream. The computer will then delete this email automatically, saving the user time and effort. Bill Gates has coined this process 'mail filtering' and claims that it could revolutionise the email industry. But thatâ(TM)s not all, we spoke to a Beta tester with Scrotum: "The system is incredible, last night I was searching a file sharing network for the new Britney song, when suddenly Scrotum interrupted and deleted it, claiming it had detected 'bullshit' in the mp3 data- streams' skid-mark. I've since, stopped listening to Britney Spears!"

Microsoft expects Scrotum to ship as soon as the code compiles on an Intel processor - at the moment it keeps crashing stating a 'bullshit error'"
